Ateneo keeps its unblemished record, using a fourth quarter explosion to remain undefeated in the UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament, eking out a hard-fought 70-59 win over Far Eastern University at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum
The Tamaraws controlled most of the game, as Ateneo struggled offensively. They would even hold a 34-27 halftime lead, forcing the Blue Eagles to 27% shooting.
Ateneo would crawl themselves back into the game, but they still trailed, 50-47.
But that changed in the fourth quarter, uncorking a 23-9 final period, perfectly executing their offense while also making key stops. Matt Nieto and Raffy Verano led the charge, combining for fifteen points. Each would finish with fourteen markers.
Ron Dennison led FEU with twelve points, while Arvin Tolentino chipped in with eleven points, but both succumbed to the Ateneo defense, shooting a combined 2/11 in the second half.
The win extends their streak to 10-0, which is enough to secure a spot in the postseason with four game remaining. FEU drops to 5-5. (c/o Kim Karlo Castro)
