NU ends losing skid, eliminates UST from postseason

National University used a strong second half to emerge with a 91-83 victory over the University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP this past Sunday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V Centre in Pasay City.

Playing without head coach Jamike Jarin as a consequence of his ejection against Ateneo earlier this week, they rode on a strong third quarter from Issa Gaye and Matt Salem to distance themselves.

Gaye and Salem combined to score 19 points on 8/11 shooting, as the Bulldogs scored 29 in the period. The duo matched UST's field goal total on four less attempts.

The Growling Tigers kept themselves in the game against NU, even managing to keep a halftime lead at 43-40. They would then extend that to a 52-45 lead before a 24-6 run in a span of over six minutes restored the momentum with the Bulldogs.

UST would manage to crawl themselves back into the game, as Vaughn Soriano's two free throws with 3:43 remaining put the deficit at 86-81. However, baskets from Gaye and Niko Abatayo ensured the win is secured.

Gaye and Salem finished with 22 points apiece, while J-Jay Alejandro had a near triple-double performance with ten points, nine rebounds, and eight assists.

The win puts NU at 4-6, one game behind FEU for the fourth and final postseason slot.

UST remains winless at 0-10 and is officially the first team eliminated. Steve Akomo led the charge with sixteen points, twelve rebounds, two steals, and a block.(c/o Kim Karlo Castro)

Note: With Jarin suspended, assistant coach and school legend Danny Ildefonso took the head coaching reins for the afternoon.
