University of the East finally picked up their first win of the season, at the expense of fellow cellar dweller the University of Santo Tomas, 96-91 in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday afternoon at Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City.
Alvin Pasaol had another scoring burst after his career game last Wednesday finishing the game with 32 points, while Philip Manalang and Mark Olayon helped in scoring department as well, tallying 20 and 15 points, respectively.
The Red Warriors led by as much as 15 points, but they weathered every time the Growling Tigers made a run. UST managed to close the gap late in the game, reducing the deficit to one in the final minute, until Pasaol converted an Olayon miss in transition to establish a 94-91 lead with 22.7 seconds remaining.
UST had a chance to reduce the deficit, but they turned the ball over with 14.1 seconds left. Philip Manalang would make it a two-possession game through two free throws with 7.5 seconds left.
Head coach Derrick Pumaren praised the effort the team showed and how they responded against the Growling Tigers. He also added that their performance late against La Salle reflected in their subsequent practices heading into this matchup.
Marvin Lee led the way for UST with 20 points while Steve Akomo added 19 points and 18 rebounds. The loss puts the Boy Sablan-coached squad to 0-7, the first time the finished the first round without a win since the Final Four rule was instituted in 1993. (c/o Kim Karlo Castro)
