This week's UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week presented by Chooks-to-Go pretty much clinched it last Wednesday, after a historic performance that took place at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
During La Salle's 106-100 victory over the University of the East, Alvin Pasaol uncorked 49 points on 20/30 shooting, serving as the anchor for the Red Warriors as they kept themselves within striking distance in the first half, then undertaking an unlikely comeback bid in the fourth quarter.
The 21-year-old tied a season-high of 17 points in a single quarter during the second period, then took advantage of La Salle resting on their laurels in the fourth by pouring 16 in the final period, helping whittle a lead that grew as large as 25 in the game. All of this while dealing with a knock on both his ankles and one of his elbows.
He would become the first player in the Imperium statistical records, which date back to 2003, to record at least 40 points. The last time a player scored that much was when current Letran head coach Jeff Napa scored 43 in August 22, 2002. The perceived UAAP scoring record is believed to be Ed Cordero's 54-point outing for the University of Santo Tomas back in 1979.
Pasaol would follow-up that performance with a 32-point outing in a 96-91 victory against the Growling Tigers, giving UE their first win of the season. His first round averages are 22.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks.
He beat out Matt Nieto, Jerrick Ahanmisi, and Ben Mbala for the Player of the Week nod, which is chosen by the scribes from the different media publications covering the league.
Addressing the media post-match, Pasaol played down the achievement.
Alvin is like akala mo, hindi nya alam yung play, parang hindi nakikinig pero once you start the play, he knows it." He adds, First time ata that I’ve coached a local that scored 49. Kasi dati import lang ang nakaka-score [ng ganoon ka taas] pero ngayon, he really gave us a show."
