The University of the East have somehow revived hopes and aspirations of making the postseason in the 80th season of the UAAP, and they have rode on Alvin Pasaol's broad shoulders to do it.
In their 73-64 win over the University of the Philippines, Pasaol battles cramps late to hit clutch baskets, finishing with 32 points to lead the Red Warriors in pulling off the upset victory.
It is such a performance that the UAAP Press Corps has rewarded the forward with his second UAAP Player of the Week nod, presented by Chooks-to-Go, beating out Leonard Santillan and Matt Nieto.
From being virtually dead in the water at 0-6, UE has won three of its last four games to be within two games of current fourth placers Far Eastern University, and just one game behind current fifth placers UP and NU.
Pasaol deflected the praise heaped towards his direction, instead acknowledging the system of head coach Derrick Pumaren and the effort put forth by his teammates. He says, "Siguro nag stick lang kami sa game plan namin para manalo kami ngayon. Maganda rin pinakita ng mga teammates ko, the way sila mag depensa."
When asked about how Alvin compares to the others that he has coached over the years, Pumaren says, "Alvin, his game, has been ready. If he wants to score he can score. Very deceiving. Medyo yung katawan. Akala natin hindi kaya ng katawan pero you’ll be surprised. He is willing to sacrifice his body. Alvin is a very special player so far na nahahandle ko."
With a matchup against La Salle in the horizon, Alvin could only say, "Kailangan siguro mas dikdikan pa ulit. kasi La Salle eh. Kailangan talaga lumaban."
