UAAP grants deadline extension for Ateneo

In a statement released on Tuesday night, the UAAP granted an extension to Ateneo de Manila University with regards to its submission of its findings in light of the incident in Dipaculao, Aurora last month.

Statement reads as follows. 

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines has granted Ateneo de Manila University’s request to extend the deadline for the submission of its official findings on the June 8, 2026 incident in Dipaculao, Aurora, from July 15 to July 24, 2026.

All previously announced preventive measures remain in effect during the extension period, including the barring of the concerned members of the Ateneo coaching staff from all UAAP-related activities.

Ateneo requested the extension before the original deadline to complete its internal investigation and submit its report. The UAAP Board approved the request during its meeting.

Any determination of accountability will be based on the findings of the appropriate government agencies, Ateneo’s independent fact-finding body, and the UAAP, in accordance with the UAAP By-Laws and applicable rules and regulations.

Jude Eriobu finished what Ziv Espinas started as Ateneo de Manila University extended the woes of defending champion University of Santo Tomas with a 100-88 victory to remain unbeaten through five games in the UAAP Season 88 High School Boys’ Basketball Tournament, Sunday afternoon at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.

Espinas ignited the Blue Eagles’ spirited comeback late in the third quarter, before Eriobu took over down the stretch, scoring eight of Ateneo’s final 17 points to stretch their perfect run to five wins and hand the Tiger Cubs a fourth loss in five outings.

Meanwhile, Cabs Cabonilas and Pat Sohm powered Far Eastern University-Diliman to its third straight victory, leaning on a dominant fourth quarter to secure a 96-73 triumph over the University of the East.

With the contrasting results, Ateneo remained on top of the eight-team standings, still a game ahead of FEU-D, which improved to 4-1. UST stayed in seventh place with a 1-4 slate, while UE slipped to a share of sixth with Adamson University at 2-3.

“It was the players who really won the game today. As much as we prepared for this game, and I know we’re prepared, it was the players -- they really wanted to win,” Blue Eagles head coach Bacon Austria said. “Not to brag or anything, we knew what we really wanted to do, it was a matter of executing it down the stretch.”

A floater by LJ Lapastora gave UST an 80-72 cushion with 1:35 remaining in the third quarter, but Espinas sparked Ateneo’s decisive 16-2 run with nine points, turning the tide and giving the Blue Eagles a 78-72 lead with over seven minutes left.

The Tiger Cubs refused to fold as Jetlee Melano knocked down two free throws and Charles Esteban scored on a layup to cut the deficit to 83-81 with 5:41 remaining. However, EK Kaw drilled a timely triple before Eriobu showed nerves of steel in the closing minutes.

The 17-year-old Nigerian center scored eight straight points to restore a 92-86 cushion with 1:25 left, before Banal calmly converted four free throws to seal Ateneo’s hard-fought, come-from-behind win.

Eriobu finished with a dominant double-double of 28 points and 21 rebounds, along with one block and one assist. Banal added 25 points, three assists, two steals, and two rebounds, while Jay-M Leal chipped in 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.

Espinas narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, to go with two assists and one block.

JC Canapi led UST with 24 points, three steals, one rebound, and one assist, while Wacky Ludovice contributed 15 points, three assists, two rebounds, one steal, and one block. Esteban tallied 13 points, four steals, three rebounds, and one assist, while Kirk Cañete added 12 points, six assists, four rebounds, and one steal.

In the other game, after Gab delos Reyes and Jolo Pascual hit back-to-back triples to knot the game at 61-all, graduating forward Marc Burgos scored six straight points before Sohm finished a layup to give the Baby Tamaraws a 69-61 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Louie Bual opened the final period with a triple to keep the Junior Warriors within five, 69-64, but that was as close as UE would get. FEU-D responded with a decisive 15-2 run—capped by two Prince Cariño free throws and a Sohm layup—to build an 86-66 advantage with 5:03 remaining.

“Nagawa nung players yung adjustments that we had to do on defense [noong fourth quarter], kaya 12 points lang sila. Mainly, it was their transition attack that we stopped, they had their shots, but luckily, nag-miss sila,” Baby Tamaraws head coach Mike Reyes said.

Cabonilas led FEU-D with 22 points on 6-of-12 shooting, along with 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block. Burgos added 12 points, seven rebounds, and one assist.

Sohm finished with eight points, five rebounds, three steals, and one block, while Khean Esperanza, Nigerian center Assan Gaye, Adi Alagaban, and Dwyne Enriquez each scored eight points in the win.

For UE, Mhico Abellar paced the Junior Warriors with 12 points, three rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Delos Reyes added 11 points, two assists, and one rebound.

Ethan Aguas was limited to seven points on four shot attempts, along with five rebounds and one block, while Sizco Roquid continued to struggle, finishing with two points on 1-of-7 shooting, two turnovers, two rebounds, and one assist.

Confident Dov Cariño ready for SEAG action with PMNFT U-22

Ateneo de Manila University midfielder Dov Cariño is on a mission: to help the Philippine Men’s Under-23 National Team finally secure a gold medal at this month’s 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand. 

Already seasoned from competing in major regional tournaments like the 32nd SEA Games and the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024, Cariño is determined to turn the country’s long-standing near-misses into triumph.

Cariño, who has netted five goals for the Blue Eagles in the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament, praised the squad’s atmosphere and training quality, highlighting the players’ readiness for the challenge ahead.

“Preparations for the SEA Games have been great. Training has been top quality, and the squad’s morale is very positive,” said the 21-year-old standout. 

“The goal of the U-23 team this SEA Games is definitely to go home with gold. We believe that we have the capacity to do so, and anything less would be disappointing.”

It’s been a whirlwind few months for Cariño, who has been a consistent presence in international U-23 competitions such as the ASEAN U-23 Mandiri Cup 2025 and the 2026 AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers, all while fulfilling his commitments with Ateneo.

As the Blue Eagles’ captain, he has steered the team to fourth in the standings, keeping them on track for a Final Four appearance when Season 88 resumes next month. Off the pitch, Cariño also balances his academic responsibilities while attending the national team’s training camp.

“Playing in UAAP this year has helped me get physically and mentally ready for these international tournaments,” said Cariño.

“The intensity of the games has helped me get in shape to represent the country and given me a chance to work on parts of my game that needed improvement."

Fortunately, Cariño’s packed schedule has been manageable. 

“Luckily, none of the three commitments clash. We played our last UAAP game just before camp started,” he shared. 

“Academically, I’ve still been able to study for and take my finals to the best of my abilities. I’m making sure everything is on track in school while focusing on preparing for the SEA Games.”

The U-23 men’s division has yet to see the Philippines reach the podium despite numerous attempts. Cariño is confident this batch of players can break the streak.

Personally, he’s ready to give everything to make it happen.

“I will give the team my all when I get the chance to play,” he said. 

“I want to leave the field knowing I’ve done everything I could. Every game, I’ll play with the mindset that I’ve given my absolute best.”

Ateneo de Manila University delivered a decisive fourth-quarter rally to eliminate Adamson University, 66-56, and advance to the UAAP Season 88 Women’s Basketball stepladder semifinals on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

After three consecutive fourth-place finishes, the Blue Eagles are finally assured of a podium spot.

Up next for Ateneo is defending champion and No. 2 seed National University in another knockout stepladder semifinal at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Blue Eagles, who last reached the Finals in Season 78 (2015) dropped both elimination-round meetings to the Lady Bulldogs, 79-83 in the first round and 47-69 in the second.

University of Santo Tomas awaits in the Finals after completing a perfect 14-0 sweep of the eliminations.

“Gusto ko lang din mapatunayan sa NU na hindi lang sila ‘yung kaya makipagcompete sa ganoong level pero kami rin. We just pray for that win,” said Kacey Dela Rosa regarding their upcoming matchup against NU.

After years of heartbreaking fourth-place finishes, Dela Rosa is hungrier than ever to finally reach the Finals.

Leading by just six entering the final frame, the Blue Eagles opened the fourth quarter with an 11-0 blitz to build a 17-point lead with six minutes left, 65-48.

Dela Rosa teamed up with Kate Cancio, Camille Malagar, and Kai Oani during the run that left the Lady Falcons reeling.

Adamson’s first basket of the fourth quarter came at the 4:24 mark on an Elaine Etang fastbreak layup off a steal.

“Adamson made a run but our defense held up. That’s what we talk about. We really admire Adamson, we learn a lot of things from them. They’re a very tough and scrappy team. Today, with God’s help we were able to pull through,” said Ateneo head coach LA Mumar, whose squad rebounded after two straight losses to end the eliminations.

Dela Rosa anchored Ateneo with 17 points, 20 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal.

Oani and Malagar added 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Sarah Makanjuola produced nine points, 16 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks—though her seven turnovers remain a point of concern.

Etang led Adamson with 18 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals, while Kemi Adeshina chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.

Cris Padilla, Kat Agojo, and Angela Alaba played their final game in an Adamson uniform.

The Lady Falcons finished in fourth place after stringing together three straight wins to close the eliminations and secure the final berth in the Final Four.

Ateneo asserts collegiate badminton domination in de Guzman farewell

ATENEO de Manila University reclaimed the throne and was crowned queen of the UAAP Season 88 Badminton tournament, sweeping first-time finalist National University, 3-0, on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall in Malate, Manila.

As if scripted, graduating captain Mika De Guzman capped her UAAP career with a rousing performance, leading the Blue Eagles to their eighth UAAP title in her fifth and sixth years—making her swan song a true coronation.

Ateneo completed the badminton golden double as its men's team earlier secured victory over the University of the Philippines, 3-0.

A standout from St. Paul College in Pasig, De Guzman ensured her return was one of redemption, sweeping the two events she played—the first singles match and the first doubles match.

De Guzman, a Smash Pilipinas standout, displayed both consistency and dominance, needing just 20 minutes in her final singles match to topple Hailene Diaz, 21-8, 21-8. Diaz tried to match De Guzman at the start of both games, but the Ateneo star quickly took control and never looked back.

Her teammate and sophomore, Althea Ocampo, overcame a first-game setback to defeat NU's top player, Ysabel Amora, 17-21, 21-12, 21-13, in the second singles rubber.

Ocampo showed flashes of brilliance in the opener against Amora, but her rally wasn’t enough to take down the Lady Bulldog.

The Season 87 Rookie of the Year, however, carried that momentum into the second and third games, putting Ateneo on the verge of the championship.

With Ateneo up 2-0, De Guzman and co-captain Jochelle Alvarez wasted no time reclaiming the throne for the Blue Eagles in the lone doubles match.

After the mandatory break for Amora, who also played doubles, De Guzman and Alvarez dominated the first game and turned the second set into a statement of their championship credentials.

The Ateneo captains patiently waited for the right moments to attack, and despite taking 34 minutes to close the match, they claimed a decisive 21-6, 21-10 victory over Amora and Gwyneth Desacola, securing both the tie and the championship.

"Of course, I am very happy and proud of the team, that we were able to bring the double gold back to Ateneo. So just really happy and proud of everyone," De Guzman said.

"Well, sobrang nakita ko naman. Kay Avec (Ocampo) pa lang nakita ko na all heart, all out siya. And I am very happy that Jochelle and I also gave our all out, all heart this season."

With this triumph, Ateneo claimed its sixth men's title and ninth women's crown, marking a third double crown and a second twin victory in three years.

With eventual MVPs De Guzman and Lyrden Laborte leading the way, longtime head coach Kennie Asuncion-Robles credited the team’s hunger after last year’s losses.

"Definitely, maraming learnings from what happened last year, so talagang gutom sila to take it back," said the concurrent program director of the Philippine Badminton Association.

"Sobrang ok na, we had good recruitment and it played a big role, eh, kasi hindi sobrang pagod 'yung players mo. Hindi kailangang mag-double event lahat. It was really a big help."

University of the Philippines continued its post-pandemic podium streak with a third-place finish, sweeping University of Santo Tomas, 3-0.

Susmita Ramos and Anthea Gonzalez gave the Fighting Maroons a 2-0 lead following contrasting victories in the singles matches.

Ramos, a former Smash Pilipinas standout, ended her fourth year with a 21-19, 22-20 win over Reshane Nicor, while last year’s MVP, Gonzalez, needed 36 minutes to dominate eventual co-Rookie of the Year Hanie De Jesus, 21-15, 21-8.

Newcomers Krissa De Leon and Trisha Postrano then secured the bronze with a 21-18, 21-18 win over UST seniors Jennifer Saladaga and Rhafi Anne Santos.

The Fighting Maroons also had another reason to celebrate, as Brys Fuggan shared the top rookie award with De Jesus.

On the men’s side, 18-year-olds Lovic Javier of De La Salle University and JR Pandi of Ateneo were named Rookies of the Year.

Jada Bicierro delivered a crucial strike in the second half as Ateneo de Manila University battled to a 1-1 draw against the University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Football Tournament, Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.

Down by a goal, the 19-year-old forward found the back of the net in the 79th minute to level the score and deny the Lady Booters a full three points.

It was a well-earned finish for Bicierro—her third goal of the season—as the former national futsal team standout consistently tested the UST defense with dangerous attempts from the opening whistle.

“Jada is always a game changer,” said Ateneo coach Bob Manlulo. “I guess we rose up to the challenge. I told the players that for us to win or even draw against UST, we have to level up with their physical game.

"So I think the players did their job. They basically had fun rising up to the challenges," he added.

UST drew first blood in the 59th minute through Christy Logastua, who calmly slotted the ball into the net after Ateneo goalkeeper Chelssy Casals was caught off her line.

The Lady Booters nearly reclaimed the lead in the 82nd minute when substitute Jillian Jalnaz attempted to score a late winner, but she could not convert as the two sides ultimately shared the spoils at full time.

Both teams wrapped up the first round with four points apiece.

UST stayed in third place with a -1 goal difference, while Ateneo settled for fourth with -4.

Jada Bicierro scored the decisive goal in the second half to give Ateneo de Manila University a 1-0 victory over the University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Football Tournament on Wednesday at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub here.

The former national futsal standout finished a well-executed counterattack, turning in a precise delivery from Celina Salazar in the 53rd minute to break the deadlock and hand the Blue Eagles their first win of the season.

Bicierro — now with two goals this season after scoring in back-to-back matches — lifted Ateneo to fourth place with three points and a goal difference of -4, just behind University of Santo Tomas, which has a -1 GD.

"I guess, just like what we did in Ang Liga (against the same team), I told the players to be patient and just get the right timing on the counterattack because UP has a good defensive line. So, we used our advantage with Jada Bicierro, who can really outrun them. I think that was the key to win today," said long-time head coach Bob Manlulo of his side’s breakthrough victory.

The two sides will vie for sole possession of third place in Saturday’s opening match at 4 p.m., when action resumes at the UP Football Stadium in Diliman, Quezon City.

“UST is a highly physical team, and we have to be on par with them. We have to put the mentality to the girls that football is a physical contact game and we have to really fight for each ball, just to win that game," Manlulo said, previewing their clash against the Lady Booters.

Bicierro’s goal was a reward for Ateneo’s resilient defensive stand and its sharp transitions on the counterattack, with Bicierro and Salazar providing the spark. Soleil Schroth had the Blue Eagles’ biggest chance in the opening period when her 37th-minute shot went just over the bar.

For the Fighting Maroons, the result did not reflect their dominance, especially in the first half. Jazi Borra and Isalyn Tundag made strong runs but failed to find the back of the net.

Erisa Rivas also had her moments off the bench in the second half but could not prevent UP from slipping to a fourth straight defeat to close the first round.

Full UAAP statement on UE-Ateneo Men's Football incident

Following the University of the East and Ateneo de Manila University match in the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament last Sunday at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub, the UAAP Disciplinary Committee has imposed sanctions on those involved in the incident, in accordance with the PFF Disciplinary Code.

The match, which ended in a 4-3 victory for UE, was marred by controversy after the Red Warriors left the pitch following the Blue Eagles’ third goal while the game was still ongoing.

Although UE eventually returned to complete stoppage time, their walkout triggered a series of altercations involving both teams and some spectators at the venue.

As a result, the UAAP Disciplinary Committee has penalized UE with a deduction of three points in the league table.

This sanction is grounded in Article 30 of the PFF Disciplinary Code—Deduction of Points—which allows for the removal of points in current or future PFF competitions.
The Committee determined that UE’s actions breached the values of discipline, respect, and fair play that the league upholds.

UE head coach Frank Muescan has been handed a one-match suspension, to be served in the Red Warriors’ next game against Adamson University this Thursday at Vermosa.

He will also face further investigation, as it was he who ordered his players to leave the pitch and head to the dugout.

Two UE players received multiple-match bans for their involvement in the incident.

Defender Mark Maghinay was suspended for four matches after assaulting a linesman and provoking the crowd. Fellow defender Christian Tio was given a two-match ban for pushing Ateneo strength and conditioning coach Dox Delos Reyes from behind, an act deemed a serious violation of athlete conduct standards.

On the Ateneo side, Blue Eagles head coach JP Merida was sanctioned for verbally lashing out at Commissioner Rely San Agustin during the commotion.

He will serve a touchline ban in Ateneo’s upcoming game against the University of Santo Tomas, also on Thursday at Vermosa.

In addition, an unidentified member of the UE delegation—wearing a ‘Gala’ #20 Blue Manila Montet jersey—has been banned from entering both the Vermosa and UP Diliman Football Stadiums.

The individual was caught by Ayala Vermosa Sports Director Hans-Peter Smit locking the dugout gate on the fourth official, who was attempting to speak with the UE team during their walkout. The stadium ban will take effect immediately, beginning with the next match.

These sanctions were determined after a thorough review of officiating decisions, disciplinary considerations, reinforcement of match-day protocols, and the implementation of stricter crowd control measures.

The UAAP also acknowledged concerns raised about the officiating during the game.

In partnership with the PFF, referee performances will continue to be evaluated through a structured, developmental process.

The league reiterated its commitment to raising the standard of officiating, emphasizing that the goal is not only to ensure consistency but also to exceed expectations in high-stakes matches for the benefit of teams, student-athletes, and fans alike.

Ateneo holds off UE for back-to-back wins

Kymani Ladi continued to showcase his pedigree, lifting Ateneo de Manila University past the University of the East, 62-60, to take the early lead in the UAAP Season 88 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Wednesday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

The one-and-done recruit from Merritt College delivered in the clutch, drilling a go-ahead three-pointer to put the Blue Eagles back on top, 61-60, with 22.7 seconds left.

That came just moments after Wello Lingolingo gave the Red Warriors the lead, 60-58, with a tough off-the-dribble triple at the 31.9-second mark.

“We had a pretty stable first half… But then our shooting really abandoned us in the second half. We got good looks, but we just didn’t hit shots. At the end of the day, it was defensive rebounding that won the game. We had some critical stops in critical moments, and different guys stepped up,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin as his squad improved to 2-0.

UE still had a chance to snatch the win, but Nico Mulingtapang lost the ball after Dominic Escobar came up with a timely steal. Lingolingo was then whistled for an unsportsmanlike foul, giving Ateneo two free throws and possession.

Escobar split his charities, while Jaden Lazo missed both of his attempts, leaving the door open for UE. However, Precious Momowei fumbled the ball in transition in the dying seconds, allowing Ateneo to escape with the victory.

“That shot shouldn’t have even happened. I think we had a good lead coming after the half. Credit to UE, they fought just as much as we did. Man, it shouldn’t have gotten to that point,” said Ladi of his game-winner. He finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Waki Espina added 17 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, while Jared Bahay chipped in eight points, six rebounds, and four assists, though he struggled from the field with a 3-of-10 clip.

UE, which dropped to 0-2, put up a stronger fight compared to its 72-57 loss to National University in its opener. Lingolingo caught fire after scoring just two points in the first half, finishing with a game-high 19 points and seven boards.

John Abate contributed 11 points before fouling out with 1:38 left, while Momowei tallied nine points, 18 rebounds, two steals, and a block in a monster effort.

Both squads return to action on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Ateneo will face Adamson University at 4:30 p.m., while UE will battle the University of the Philippines at 2 p.m.

REIGNING two-time MVP Kacey Dela Rosa exploded for 29 points as Ateneo de Manila University opened its UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Basketball Tournament campaign with a dominant 81-52 win over University of the East, Wednesday afternoon at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.

Banking on the experience of Dela Rosa—fresh off a stint with Gilas Pilipinas Women in the FIBA 3x3 Under-23 World Cup last week—the Blue Eagles shrugged off a slow start. They turned a slim three-point lead after the first quarter into a decisive 45-27 advantage, leaving the Lady Warriors struggling to keep up.

Beyond notching their 11th consecutive victory over UE since Season 81 (2018), Ateneo—fourth-place finishers in the past three seasons—also spoiled the UAAP coaching debut of Ian Valdez, who took over the Lady Warriors program from Ai Lebornio.

“Sinasabi ko lang sa kanila na first game pa lang ito. Parang warm up lang ito for game and for sure na magste-step up din sila sa mga next games. Kasi nga first game, sabi nga ni coach parang kinakabahan sila. Ang ending, ginagabayan ko sila,” said Dela Rosa, who tallied 19 first-half points and finished with 29 on 13-of-18 shooting, along with nine rebounds, five steals, and four blocks.

(“I just told them that this was only the first game. It was like a warm-up game, and for sure they will step up in the next ones. Since it was the first game, as coach said, they were nervous. In the end, I guided them.”)

UE tried to keep pace in the third quarter, but Ateneo’s second-period onslaught proved too much.

A Dela Rosa inside hit and a Cancio layup kept the Blue Eagles firmly in control, 60-41, entering the final frame.

A four-point burst by Dela Rosa, a Kate Cancio layup, and a Monique Fetalvero jumper then stretched the lead to 30, 75-45, with less than four minutes left, effectively sealing the win.

The game was so lopsided that Dela Rosa, who set a career-high of 34 points last season, was subbed out midway through the payoff period.

“Our girls kind of started a little bit tense, so Kacey had to bring the veteran presence—sila ni Sarah (Makanjoula). Our girls were a little bit hyper, I guess [may] first game jitters for most of our girls. Kaya Kacey, the MVP, stepped up, sila ni Sarah,” Blue Eagles head coach LA Mumar said.

Nigerian center Sarah Makanjoula posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, alongside three steals, two assists, and one block. Cancio also chipped in 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting with four rebounds, two steals, and one block.

The Blue Eagles aim to sustain their momentum when they face the Adamson University Lady Falcons in a rematch of last season's Final Four on on Sunday, September 28, at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors, who notched a breakthrough win over De La Salle University in the first round of Season 87 on September 22, 2024, have since dropped 11 straight games in the UAAP.

Aliyah Ronquillo paced UE with 11 points on 3-of-11 shooting, while Rachel Lacayanga added 10 points and two steals.

The Lady Warriors will try to bounce back against University of the Philippines on the same date and venue.

Agyei brace highlights return to college football at Ateneo

Dov Cariño orchestrated the play while Kofi Agyei made a triumphant return as Ateneo de Manila University cruised past Adamson University, 3-0, in the opener of the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament on Sunday at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub here.

Agyei, who missed last season due to a combination of injury and academic commitments, marked his comeback with a brace in his first game back for the Blue Eagles.

The Ghanaian forward calmly opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a clinical finish off Cariño’s defense-splitting pass, then headed home his second goal in the 82nd minute to seal the win.

Sandwiched between Agyei’s two strikes, Cariño — a national U23 standout and newly appointed team captain — also found the back of the net with a stunning free kick that beat Falcons goalkeeper Sean Chua in the 64th minute, doubling Ateneo’s lead.

For coach JP Merida, seeing his dynamic duo combine so effectively in the season opener is an encouraging sign for the Blue Eagles’ campaign.

“Going into this game, I was confident that both of them would combine,” said the three-time champion mentor. “My idea was that they would score. In my view, I thought Dov would have scored the first goal, but of course, Kofi did well. We’re happy because Dov and Kofi’s combination upfront is amazing. It’s a good start for us.”

Ateneo will continue its campaign on Sunday when it faces University of the East at 4 p.m. at the same Imus venue.

Meanwhile, Adamson was left to rue missed opportunities that could have altered the game’s outcome. The Soaring Falcons created chaos in the Blue Eagles’ box, culminating in a goal-line clearance by Ateneo midfielder Marcus Arias.

Roberto Roldan and Cameroonian winger Golike Dany Doko also had chances on goal, but neither could find the back of the net.

Adamson will look to bounce back against University of Santo Tomas this Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Vermosa.

Bahay, Ladi bail out Ateneo in UAAP opener

JARED Bahay and Kymani Ladi linked up in the clutch to lift Ateneo de Manila University to an 86-83 overtime win over Far Eastern University, opening their UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Men’s Basketball campaign on a high note at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion, Saturday.

After a dismal start to Season 87, where they dropped their first three games on their way to matching their worst finish at 4-10, the Blue Eagles are eager to regain their winning touch—and they could not have asked for a better start.

Ateneo also snapped a four-game losing streak against FEU, with their last win dating back to Season 85.

“Welcome back to the UAAP. It looks like it’s going to be that kind of year. Great for the fans, really exciting. I’m proud of the team for sticking to the job and getting across the finish line,” said Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin after the overtime thriller.

The game was marked by momentum swings.

The Tamaraws rallied from a 57-65 deficit to take a 70-65 lead, only for the Blue Eagles to respond with a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead at 74-70 late in regulation.

Jorick Bautista’s back-to-back baskets eventually forced overtime.

FEU started the extra period strong, scoring the first six points for an 80-74 lead.

Bahay then took over, hitting consecutive three-pointers to tie the game at 80 with 1:06 remaining.

The sophomore guard from Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu followed it up with a steal that led to a fastbreak layup by Ladi, giving Ateneo the lead.

Ladi sealed the win with a top-of-the-key triple, pushing the Blue Eagles ahead 85-80 with just 10.1 seconds remaining.

Bautista sprinted the length of the court and banked in a one-handed three with 4.2 seconds left, cutting FEU’s deficit to 83-85.

But Bahay put the finishing touches on the win, converting a free throw after being fouled and securing a steal off Mo Konateh’s rebound following two missed free throws by Shawn Tuano.

“I'm not entirely happy with the quality of our performance at both ends of the floor. There were moments when we played well, but this game was won on talent rather than tactics, coaching, or cohesiveness,” Baldwin admitted.

Ladi, who has only one season of eligibility after four years at Merritt College in California, led Ateneo with 26 points on 10-of-22 shooting, along with nine rebounds, three assists, and a block.

Dom Escobar, another one-and-done recruit who previously played at Cal State, added 16 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes, sitting out late due to cramps.

Bahay scored 10 of his 13 points in the final 7:29, contributing five assists and four steals.

Nigerian center Divine Adili, who did not start due to back issues, still added seven points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

Ateneo looks to improve to 2-0 when it faces the University of the East on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the same venue.

For FEU, Janrey Pasaol narrowly missed a triple-double with 24 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds, while Bautista also scored 24 points.

Last season’s Mythical Five member Mo Konateh played all but 49 seconds, finishing with 11 points, 23 rebounds, and two blocks.

The Tamaraws will aim for their first win next Saturday against National University at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Bernardo's walk-off lifts Ateneo over Adamson

ANGELO Bernardo stepped up to the plate at the very last moment and delivered Ateneo de Manila University to an 8-7 walk-off spoiler win over Final Four-seeking Adamson University to finish their UAAP Season 87 Baseball campaign on a high note at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium, Wednesday morning.

Bernardo, a third-year slugger out of PAREF Southridge School, was called up to bat for Alfonso Tueres with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning with just one out.

He embraced the trust given to him by head coach Bocc Bernardo, hammering a blooper to left center field that scored Joaquin Mendoza and Khristian Ferrolino for the victory that snapped a six-game skid for the Blue Eagles to end the season with a 2-8 record.

“Medyo nagtalo kami ni Coach Randy (Dizer) sa last minute na yun ano? But sabi ko kailangan ko lang ng hitter. Even if you don’t look at the stats, si Angelo was one of our more consistent hitters all throughout the season so at that very moment I made that decision na siya ‘yung papaluin,” said Bocc Bernardo, who is in his third year as the Ateneo head coach.

(“We kind of had a disagreement, Coach Randy (Dizer) and I, in that last minute, right? But I told him I just needed a hitter. Even if you don’t look at the stats, Angelo was one of our more consistent hitters throughout the season, so at that very moment, I made the decision that he would be the one to take the hit.")

After Matt San Juan flew out to left field to open the bottom of the ninth stanza, senior players Mendoza and Carlos Dela Rosa reached base on a walk and a single, respectively. Dela Rosa was then replaced with pinch runner Ferrolino.

Rico Samson then earned himself a walk to load the bases with him being replaced by pinch runner Rafael Aquino.

Then Angelo Bernardo’s moment came.

“Alam naman namin lahat what we are capable of. Just breaks of the game and of course our youth was a big factor. Winning at the end of the season was also very good for us kasi syempre we don’t wanna move on and look at what we did wrong, we also want to know what we did right,” said Bocc Bernardo.

Trailing 4-6 in the top of the eighth period, pinpoint baserunning allowed Adamson to take over and regain a 7-6 lead.

John Mark Tupig ignited the three-run rally with an inning-opening triple followed by John Matanguihan’s single to plate him and trim the Soaring Falcons deficit to just one, 5-6.

After Ateneo took out the next two batters, Bocc Bernardo gambled by intentionally walking the next two hitters, cleanup batter Joao Severino and Lawrence Mercado to open the possibility of a force-out.

However, a failed pickoff attempt at first base allowed Adamson to score Matanguihan and Severino for the 7-6 advantage.

The Soaring Falcons, who ended the elimination round at 4-6, could have entered the Final Four with a win but are now relegated to the playoff for the last semifinals spot against the loser of the UST Golden Sox-UP Fighting Maroons match being played as of publishing time.

Ateneo’s plate discipline was in full display, earning nine walks while also nabbing eight hits while Joshua de Juras registered a no-relief effort on the mound, striking out seven.

Matanguihan went 3-of-6 at-bat while Severino and Mercado also tallied two hits each for Adamson.

James Nisnisan, a rookie pitcher out of Baguio National School of Arts and Trades, started for the Soaring Falcons but struggled, allowing two hits and two walks in just 1/3 inning of work before head coach Lando Binarao pulled the plug and replaced him with Rommel Bacalla, who pitched 8 and 1/3 innings.

With two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, Kenneth Delos Santos took over the mound for Adamson but could not finish the job.

Mendoza, Dela Rosa, Samson, Emilio Perez, Lorenzo Montemayor, and Ezekiel Laygo made their final run around the diamond.

Learning the lessons from its first round encounter, Ateneo de Manila University finished off Adamson University in straight sets this time, 25-23, 25-14, 25-23, to secure its third straight win in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

The Blue Eagles faced the Lady Falcons in their season opener and were a recipient of a stinging 25-21, 25-20, 12-25, 15-25, 12-15 reverse sweep with Shaina Nitura breaking the then UAAP rookie scoring record with 33 points.

Ateneo took the lessons of that heartbreaker and made sure not to repeat its mistakes this second round.

“I think our best skill today was our serves. Our serves did a lot of damage to the opponent. This is important, and in the hard moments, my team continued to focus,s and it’s the best to do for this moment,” said Blue Eagles head coach Sergio Veloso as his squad dominated the aces department, 12-5.

Ateneo now holds a 4-5 record for joint-fifth and sixth spots with University of the Philippines.

The sweep became possible when Ateneo turned a 16-19 deficit to a 25-23 win in the first set, thanks to the tandem of Jihan Chuatico and AC Miner.

That momentum cascaded in the second frame, where the Blue Eagles just dominated the Lady Falcons, 25-14.

But Adamson did not go easily in the third with Ateneo at match point, 24-21, as Nitura delivered back-to-back hits to inch within a point, but the sensational rookie in the next play grazed the net on a block attempt, giving the Blue Eagles the victory in one hour and 39 minutes.

“For this game everyone contributed, like everyone put the effort and they are focused inside the court. We just fight kahit anong mangyari, just push through every point,” said setter Taks Fujimoto, who tossed 17 excellent sets to go with five points on three attacks and two aces.

Miner led the balanced offense of Ateneo with 13 points, while Lyann De Guzman turned in another all-around performance with 12 points, 13 digs, and 13 receptions.

Zey Pacia also delivered 10 points and eight digs in the win that saw the Blue Eagles make more spikes, 40-33, and commit fewer errors, 17-21.

Ateneo eyes another win on Wednesday when it clashes with rival De La Salle University at the same Cubao venue, hoping to get back one of the teams it lost in the first round. The Lady Spikers have won their last 15 duels with the Blue Eagles.

Nitura still unleashed 21 points, 11 receptions, and seven digs in the loss, but she had no help.

Frances Mordi had nine points, while the rest of Adamson scored just four points or less.

The Lady Falcons, who dropped to solo seventh at 3-6, will look to rebound on Wednesday as well against the UST Golden Tigresses.

ATENEO de Manila University strengthened its hold of the third spot in the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Volleyball Tournament after taking down Adamson University, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17, for its third straight win on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Blue Eagles, who missed the Final Four in the past two seasons and finished at fifth both times, now hold a 6-3 record - a game ahead of closest pursuers University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers and De La Salle Green Spikers with identical 5-4 slates.

“Happy ako kasi kahit ilang sets pa yan basta panalo is panalo sa akin kasi tinrabaho yan ng players. Nagtiwala sila sa amin, nagtiwala kami sa kanila kaya ito yung nagiging result namin,” said Ateneo head coach Vince Mangulabnan after the one-hour, 52-minute battle.

("I'm happy because no matter how many sets it takes, a win is a win for me since the players worked hard for it. They trusted us, and we trusted them—that's why this is the result we achieved.")

The Blue Eagles regained control of the match after the Soaring Falcons tied the game at one set apiece, thanks to superb defense that limited their foes in the third set.

In the third frame, Adamson only scored five attack points and one ace while its other 10 points came from the errors of Ateneo.

Then the Blue Eagles finished off the Falcons with a strong finisher in the fourth, turning an 18-16 close game to a 25-17 clincher, thanks to Kennedy Batas and Amil Pacinio’s efforts.

“Honestly, nung first two sets lousy ‘yung galaw ng isa’t isa so sinabihan ko lang sila na mag-smile kayo kasi malaking tulong yan and don’t be encouraged kasi nawala kami sa focus nung second set. In the latter part ng game, we were able to overcome ‘yung ganoong challenges,” said Batas, who got 20 points and 11 receptions.

("Honestly, in the first two sets, everyone was moving sluggishly, so I just told them to smile because it helps a lot. I also reminded them not to get discouraged just because we lost focus in the second set. In the latter part of the game, we were able to overcome those challenges.")

Jian Salarzon chipped in 19 points and eight digs, while Pacinio had 15 points.

Lorenzo Gutierrez steered the Blue Eagles with 24 excellent sets, while libero Lance De Castro delivered 14 excellent receptions and 10 digs.

Ateneo looks to continue its streak on Wednesday when it faces La Salle also at the Big Dome.

The Soaring Falcons, on the other hand, slipped to 2-7, joining the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons at sixth and seventh places.

Jude Aguilar was the lone bright spot with 16 points on 13-of-42 attacks and three blocks.

Adamson, looking to regain its winning form, will collide with UST on Wednesday as well.

Ateneo de Manila University continued its dominance over University of the Philippines, grinding out a hard-fought 15-25, 25-23, 27-25, 30-32, 16-14 five-set thriller to open its UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament second-round campaign at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, Saturday.

Team captain Lyann de Guzman, AC Miner, and Yvanna Sulit played pivotal roles in the Blue Eagles’ victory, which allowed them to forge a three-way tie for fifth place with the Adamson University Lady Falcons and the Fighting Maroons, all holding identical 3-5 records.

They are now trailing fourth-running Far Eastern University by one-and-a-half game in the race for the No. 4 spot in the Final Four.

The win reaffirmed Ateneo’s mastery over UP, having previously swept the Fighting Maroons 25-18, 25-22, 25-18 in their first-round encounter on February 23.

This victory also marked Ateneo’s 11th consecutive win against UP, a streak that dates back to Season 81’s first-round clash in 2019. The last time the Fighting Maroons triumphed over the Blue Eagles was in the second round of Season 80 on April 7, 2018.

“Today, when you think about the teams, we don’t have one specific special player to play very very long. Today, it’s special for our team because we play sometimes with mistakes, but the team never gave up today. If I think about how special this is today, that’s because everybody played at a high level,” Blue Eagles head coach Sergio Veloso said.

A quick hit from Jihan Chuatico, two straight attacks from De Guzman, and a Yvanna Sulit push attack allowed Ateneo to build a comfortable 11-7 cushion, but the trio of Joan Monares, Kianne Olango, and Nina Ytang spearheaded a clutch 7-1 UP run to arrive at match point with a 14-12 lead.

However, the Blue Eagles displayed incredible poise under pressure as two consecutive hits from Zey Pacia knotted the match at 14-all.

Ateneo then relied on back-to-back UP errors -- an Irah Jaboneta net touch error and an attack error from rookie Yesha Noceja -- to seal the dramatic come-from-behind win in two hours and 53 minutes.

“Sabi ko nga sa kanila bago pa maglaro, ibigay na ang lahat kasi wala naman nang mawawala sa amin. We just need to give out 110 percent. Hindi namin ito makukuha kung hindi kami lahat nagtrabaho. I am very proud of my teammates kasi napakita nila na kaya nila and nagstep up ang everyone kahit sino ‘man ipasok sa court,” De Guzman said.

De Guzman fueled the Blue Eagles’ third Season 87 triumph with a game-high 25-point performance built on 23 attacks, one block, and one ace along with 17 excellent receptions and 14 excellent digs, while Miner contributed 19 points on 17 attacks and two blocks with 10 excellent digs.

The duo of De Guzman and Miner were provided with ample support coming from three other Ateneo players in double figures in Pacia (13 points), Chuatico (12 points), and Sulit (11 points).

Taks Fujimoto tossed 26 excellent sets with two points, while starting libero Fiona Arroyo had 16 excellent receptions and 10 excellent digs.

The Blue Eagles look to tally their third consecutive win when they clash against the Lady Falcons next Saturday, March 29, at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Ytang paced the Fighting Maroons in the losing effort with 24 points on 19 attacks, four blocks, and one ace, while Jaboneta achieved 20 points on 17 attacks, two blocks, and one ace with 13 excellent receptions and 10 excellent digs.

Monares scored 18 points on 15 attacks, two aces, and one block with eight excellent digs and seven excellent receptions, while American middle blocker Kassandra Doering and Olango chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively.

UP, meanwhile, aims to rediscover its winning form against the undefeated National University on Wednesday, March 26, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

ATENEO de Manila University opened its UAAP Season 87 Men’s Volleyball second round campaign with a rousing 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 victory over University of the Philippines on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Dan Nicolas and Tommy Castrodes attempted to put the Fighting Maroons on the board, closing in within 16-18 in the third but the Blue Eagles decided to end it in straight sets.

Amil Pacinio, Jettlee Gopio, and Jian Salarzon teamed up in Ateneo’s finisher to lift its record to 5-3 at solo third, above idle UST Golden Spikers and De La Salle Green Spikers at 4-3.

“Masaya ako sa pinakita ng team kasi itong second round sabi ko nag reset na kami kasi hindi siya like nung first round na wala kaming guide or any pwedeng reviewin or kahit ‘yung ibang teams,” said Ateneo head coach Vince Mangulabnan.

Pacinio finished with 17 points on 12-of-19 attacks, three aces, and two blocks along with four digs to lead the Blue Eagles to the one-hour, 17-minute win.

Kennedy Batas, the Most Valuable Player race leader after the first round, chipped in 14 points on 13 attacks and one ace along with 10-of-15 excellent receptions, while Salarzon got 10 points.

The Blue Eagles dominated the Fighting Maroons in the spiking and service departments, 45-35 and 7-0, respectively.

"Itong second round, mababago lahat kasi nagmeet na nung first round, ito na yung time para sa basahan talaga ng laro," added the former NU setter.

Ateneo will be back next Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum against Adamson University.

Nicolas and Castrodes paced the Fighting Maroons with 10 points each with the latter, a rookie out of Adamson High School, getting 12 excellent receptions. Olayemi Raheem contributed nine points.

UP looks to return to the win column on Wednesday against defending champion National University at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

ATENEO de Manila University broke into the win column of the UAAP Season 87 Baseball Tournament with a thrilling 7-5 victory over University of the Philippines, Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Malate, Manila.

The Blue Eagles leaned on the heroics of third-year left fielder Joshua De Juras and the solid pitching of rookie Lucas Atentido to pull off the win, tying them with the Fighting Maroons at 1-2 for fifth to sixth place.

Atentido, a product of PAREF Southridge School, endured 14 hits from UP but anchored the defense by limiting them to two earned runs in a complete-game effort. His impressive outing reflected the emphasis on defensive adjustments made by Ateneo's coaching staff, led by Bocc Bernardo, during the two-week break.

"Para sa 'kin, 'yung first two games were very far from the potential of the team. Most of my players kasi, ten of eleven of them are rookies, so it would take time for them to get used to the level sa UAAP. Sa two weeks na 'yon, we tightened up our defense and made some adjustments sa lineup," said Bernardo, a former catcher for the Blue Eagles.

Defense proved vital for Ateneo as UP threatened to turn the tide in the final two innings.

Last year's Rookie of the Year Aaron Nicha and VJ Mangahas tried to ignite rallies in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. However, Ateneo's outfield held firm to preserve the lead.

Center fielder Alejandro Mendoza denied reigning MVP Ian Mendoza his fourth hit of the day by snatching a high ball in the eighth inning, stranding Nicha and Eman Javier on base.

De Juras then stepped up defensively with two straight putouts off Razhley Santos and Kobe Torres in the ninth. Marvin Nalzaro, who replaced Kiel Agojo, grounded out to first baseman Daniel Fabella for the final out, securing Ateneo's hard-fought victory.

The Blue Eagles built a 3-0 lead early, sparked by Angelo Bernardo's hit to deep centerfield. An error by UP third baseman VJ Mangahas with Luis Magsadia at the plate and a hit-by-pitch incident involving Daniel Badrina and Alfonso Tueres loaded the bases. Zeke Laygo then delivered a crucial looping hit down the right foul line, driving in two runs.

Laygo finished with one hit and two RBIs, while Luis Fabella added two more RBIs in the third inning to pad Ateneo's lead.

Ateneo will aim for back-to-back wins when they face defending champions National University (2-0), who were playing at press time, in Sunday's second game.

The loss overshadowed several strong offensive performances from the Fighting Maroons. Mangahas led the charge with four hits in five at-bats and one RBI. Reigning Best Hitter Mercado chipped in three hits, while Santos contributed two hits and one RBI.

Daniel Badrina absorbed his first loss of the season after surrendering seven runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. Ram Matanguihan kept Ateneo scoreless the rest of the way, but UP's attempted comeback fell short as they suffered their second consecutive defeat following an opening-day win.

UP will face Adamson University (1-1) in Sunday's third game, while University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University will open the day's action at 7 a.m.

Lyann de Guzman delivered when it mattered most.

With Ateneo de Manila University on the brink of a meltdown, the Blue Eagles’ captain nailed a clutch crosscourt hit to lift her squad to a gritty 20-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 15-13 victory over the University of the East in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

De Guzman’s game-winning hit capped a resilient effort from Ateneo, which leaned heavily on fourth-year standout AC Miner to overcome its undermanned roster.

“I’m very happy sa pinakita ng team. Admittingly, nagstruggle kami in the game, pero sabi ko sa kanila hindi kami sumabay sa UE kasi we have our own pacing and we know kung paano kami maglaro inside the court. Kailangan natin maging aggresive, may energy, at to have fun palagi,” the 23-year-old outside hitter said, who delivered 17 points on 16 attacks and one block with 14 excellent receptions and 13 excellent digs in the two hour and 21-minute five-set victory.

Miner, who shifted from her usual middle blocker role to opposite spiker throughout the match, dug deep in her bag and finished with 23 points built on 20 attacks and three blocks. She also tallied six excellent receptions to help the Blue Eagles improve to a 2-5 record, matching last year's first round output.

Ateneo seized control in the fifth set with a crucial 3-1 run, fueled by timely hits from De Guzman and second-year spiker Zey Pacia, turning a slim 7-5 edge into a commanding 10-6 advantage.

As UE continued to apply pressure, the Bacolod Tay Tung High School duo of Jihan Chuatico and Alex Montoro, alongside NUNS alum Robi Silla stepped up in the clutch. Chuatico fired two crucial quick hits, Montoro delivered an ace, and Silla hammered in a quick hit to widen the gap to 14-8.

Van Bangayan then sparked a late surge for UE, scoring four points in a pivotal 5-0 run that trimmed the deficit to 14-13. But with the game on the line, De Guzman rose to the occasion, firing a powerful crosscourt hit to seal the victory for the Blue Eagles.

“From this point on, the most important thing is that they continue to play on a high level all the time… I’m so proud because they understand that they have to push through [despite the injuries],” Ateneo head coach Sergio Veloso said.

Pacia ended the day with 17 points on 12 attacks, three aces, and two blocks with 14 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions, while Chuatico tallied 10 points on eight attacks and two blocks.

Co-captain Taks Fujimoto calmly guided Ateneo’s offense with 24 excellent sets and one point in the victory.

Similar to their men counterparts, the loss kept the Lady Warriors winless through seven first-round outings, marking their first 0-7 start since Season 85 in 2023 and leaving them at the bottom of the eight-team standings.

Bangayan fired out 24 points, five excellent digs, and four excellent receptions in the losing effort, while Riza Nogales poured in 14 attacks on a game-high nine-block performance and five attacks.

Khy Cepada struggled in 10 points on 8-of-57 attacks and the Lady Warriors topscorer had two blocks with six excellent digs and six excellent receptions, while Balingit tallied nine points on seven attacks and two aces with 15 excellent receptions and 14 excellent digs.

Angelica Reyes anchored UE’s defense with 26 excellent digs and eight excellent receptions, while Tin Ecalla dished out 14 excellent sets along with 11 excellent digs and one point.

ATENEO de Manila University made swift work of undermanned University of the East, 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 for a bounce-back win to cap its UAAP Season 87 Men’s Volleyball Tournament first round on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Enzo Gutierrez, a second-year setter out of Las Vegas, steered the Blue Eagles to this dominant win and a 4-3 record at fifth spot with 18 excellent sets that allowed five players scoring at least seven points.

Kennedy Batas, the league-leader in scoring, unleashed a game-high 15 points on 11 attacks, two aces, and two blocks, he complemented with 14 receptions and six digs.

Amil Pacinio also came up with 13 points on seven spikes, three blocks, and three aces, while Jian Salarzon had 12 points, nine receptions, and seven digs.

Middle blockers Jettlee Gopio and Brian Castro also produced seven points apiece to the delight of head coach Vince Mangulabnan.

“Sinasabi ko lang lagi sa kanila na may particular player talaga na mas makakarami ng puntos or like ngayong game, balanced nga kami. Itong stats wala naman sa akin as long as ‘yung collective effort namin present,” said Mangulabnan, who is in his first year of coaching Ateneo.

("I always tell them that there will always be a particular player who will score more points, or like in this game, we were actually balanced. These stats don't really matter to me as long as our collective effort is present.")

“Personally, masasabi ko na hindi pa ako satisfied sa ibinigay ko ngayong first round kasi merong ups and downs nga sa play, yun yung kailangan namin i-work on talaga para sa second round,” Batas added as they fail to keep the momentum on their side in the first seven games.

("Personally, I can say that I'm not yet satisfied with what I contributed in the first round because there were ups and downs in our play. That's what we really need to work on for the second round.")

Ateneo made sure to finish the match in three sets, racing to an intimidating 17-8 lead in the third en route to the 80-minute victory.

The game’s first serve, supposedly at 9 a.m., was pushed 30 minutes later due to egress from the 2025 Jisoo Asia Tour event on Friday evening.

The Red Warriors ended the first round winless but will look to change their fortunes in the second round.

UE played without both of its natural setters in Andre Bicar and Dave Poquita, forcing outside spiker Steven Aligayon to be the playmaker again, tossing 14 excellent sets.

Rookie Raquim Aceron once again paced the Red Warriors with 14 points alongside 15 excellent receptions and five digs followed by another newcomer in Roy Piojo with eight.
