The second Chooks-To-Go UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week went to someone who led arguably the most surprising result so far in UAAP Season 80.
Paul Desiderio fired a career-high thirty points this past Saturday against La Salle, while also contributing six rebounds and five assists. He led the charge for the University of the Philippines' monumental victory against the defending champions, 98-87.
The Cebuano's feat was the first thirty-point performance for a Fighting Maroon since Imperium took over the handling of statistics in the UAAP back in 2003. Paul's six three-pointers played a large part in UP converting sixteen triples in the match, which tied the most a team has converted in a game.
Paul beat out Jun Manzo, Ben Mbala, Papi Sarr, and last week's winner Thirdy Ravena for the nod.
In the post-match press conference with the media, he could say, "Naglaro lang ako." He added, "Wala akong masabi. Nagpapasalamat lang ako sa mga teammates ko, kasi tulong-tulong kami para manalo."
His head coach, Bo Perasol chimed in, "His teammates are his unsung heroes. They pass the ball to him, they rebound for him, they set screens for him, they do the little things for him." Perasol believes that the guys made Paul's "excellent performance possible."
And that was especially true against the Green Archers. Manzo contributed 17 markers, including five straight in the fourth quarter to allow UP to erect an 86-77 lead with over three minutes left in the period. Jan Jaboneta and Paolo Romero stepped in with quality minutes in the final period, while the likes of Jerson Prado, Ibrahim Ouattara, and Andrew Harris took turns trying to keep Mbala in check all game.
Paul's performance has taken off since the first couple of games, chiming in 28 against UE over a week ago. He shares that "Medyo gigil pa ako first two games, pero ngayon, okay na. Nag-relax na ako."
Opposing coaches have taken note of his prowess. Aldin Ayo after the game told the media, "Ginawa na rin sa amin ni Desiderio 'yun before, so we prepared ourselves for that, pero our players did not respond." Meanwhile, UE head coach Derrick Pumaren had this to say after the game, "I think Desiderio killed us."
