University of the Philippines delivered another second-half storm to stifle Ateneo de Manila University, 94-75, in the UAAP Season 89 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Just like in their 92-85 win over the UST Growling Tigers on opening day, where they turned the game around in the third quarter, the Fighting Maroons created separation against the Blue Eagles after a 20-10 third frame to take a 66-55 lead.

“It was a good team win. We knew bago kami pumunta sa game na ito it’s not gonna be easy against Ateneo. Nag-respond well ‘yung team especially sa defensive end, playing as a team,” said head coach Goldwin Monteverde as UP earned its seventh straight win against its modern-day rival Ateneo.

The two sides engaged in a heated battle in the first half, with seven deadlocks and seven lead changes.

But the second half turned into a Fighting Maroons show as UP held the Blue Eagles to just 30 points on 9-of-32 shooting from the field while scoring 48 points on a 15-of-33 clip.

“Bilang first season ko po dito sa UAAP, ini-embrace ko lang ‘yung mga games saka opportunity na kapag naglalaro ako, I’ll just be a star player sa role ko,” said James Payosing, the former NCAA champion from San Beda who led UP with 16 points, three rebounds, and two assists.

Veejay Pre added 14 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter, along with nine rebounds for the Fighting Maroons, while Nigerian big man Francis Nnoruka posted a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Gani Stevens came close to a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds, while Noy Remogat chipped in 14 points, three assists, two steals, and two rebounds despite struggling from the field, where he shot just 5-of-14.

UP closed out the first week of the season with an early lead in the standings at 2-0, while Ateneo dropped to 1-1 in a four-way logjam.

Jared Bahay paced the Blue Eagles with 17 points, three assists, two steals, and two rebounds, while rookie Kieffer Alas added 13 points, 10 of which came in the first half.

UP will next face National University next Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena at 6 p.m. Earlier at 12 p.m., Ateneo will battle Adamson University.

Pre, Poyos anchor UP in season opener

Newcomers Veejay Pre and Arvie Poyos shifted the momentum as the University of the Philippines overcame the University of Santo Tomas, 92-85, in its UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball Tournament debut on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Down 53-58 in the third quarter, Pre, Poyos, James Payosing, and Sean Alter sparked the Fighting Maroons’ fightback, allowing UP to take a 66-62 lead heading into the final frame.

Poyos and Pre then opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back baskets, with Poyos drilling a three-pointer before Pre followed with a smooth layup to stretch UP’s lead to 71-62.

That proved to be enough cushion for the Fighting Maroons, who fended off every UST attempt to mount a comeback.

“The team really worked hard for this game. Actually, the whole year naman ever since nagstart lahat naman tumatrabaho rin. I believe that this group has its own identity din as a team and for me, whatever we faced especially in the first half, we responded well,” said UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde.

With Mark Llemit, Amiel Acido, and Donovan Sevilla keeping the Growling Tigers within striking distance, a struggling Noy Remogat found his rhythm late, scoring eight points in the final 4:27 to help keep the Fighting Maroons afloat until the final buzzer.

Nigerian center Francis Nnoruka led UP on both ends of the floor with 18 points and 12 rebounds in 23 minutes, while Remogat finished with 11 points on 3-of-13 shooting, along with seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

“Masaya ako na maganda ‘yung nangyari sa game pero marami pa rin to improve as a team. Kailangan pa rin bumalik sa training pa rin talaga,” said Remogat, who is in his final playing year.

Migs Yñiguez also delivered timely shots for 11 points, including three triples, while Alter added nine points.

Poyos, a transferee from Jose Maria College in Davao, impressed in his UP debut with eight points and five assists without committing a turnover in 17 minutes of action. Rainer Maga and Gani Stevens also chipped in eight points apiece.

Pre, the UAAP Season 87 Rookie of the Year at Far Eastern University before transferring to UP, contributed seven points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks.

Llemit led the Growling Tigers with 19 points and three assists, while Acido added 18 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Collins Akowe posted 13 points and 18 rebounds but struggled from the field, shooting 6-of-16.

UP will next face Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday, still at the Big Dome.

UST, which paid homage to its 2006 championship team with throwback uniforms, will look to bounce back on Wednesday against defending champion De La Salle University at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Scores:

UP 92 — Nnoruka 18, Remogat 11, Yñiguez 11, Alter 9, Poyos 8, Stevens 8, Maga 8, Pre 7, Payosing 5, Briones 5, Bayla 2, Palanca 0.

UST 85 — Llemit 19, Acido 18, Akowe 13, Danting 11, Buenaflor 8, Jumawan 6, Cañete 5, Sevilla 5, Porter 0, Crisostomo 0, Alao 0, Manding 0, Esteban 0.

Quarterscores: 24-22, 44-48, 66-62, 92-85.

UP continues reload with five commits for Season 90

Lising twins and Kristan Yumul (c/o UP WBT)

While UAAP Season 89 has the full focus of the University of the Philippines women's basketball team (WBT), work is also already being done to ensure continued contention in the future.

Five more players have been added to the Fighting Maroons' pool, headlined by Fil-Am twins Heart and Hannah Lising, who will undergo one-year residency before being eligible for UAAP Season 90.

The 21-year-old sisters, both guards, made a splash in Los Angeles Mission College before deciding to move to the Philippines and be part of State U's new era under coach Eric Altamirano.

Likewise serving residency are two more talents in Fil-Am Kristan Yumul, 5-6 at age 21, and Fil-Aussie Lecita Sherriffs, 5-10 at age 19.

Nigerian Okesola Victoria Olauluwa, 6-4 at age 18, is also just biding her time before linking up with compatriot Blessing Chuole Francis, with the UAAP now allowing two foreign student-athletes in the lineup.

"Siyempre, recruitment naman ang lifeblood of any program, and we're just happy for the trust these players gave us, even as they wait for a year before being able to play," said Altamirano. "What we can promise naman is all of them will be given the chance to prove themselves, kasi kailangan natin lahat sila."

With Louna Ozar and Camille Nolasco showing the way alongside highly touted newcomers Kennan Ka, Ashley Loon, and Francis, UP is hoping for a return to the playoffs after finishing fifth and seventh in the last two years.

Former Gilas Youth standout Ashley Loon commits to UP

Ashley Loon (c/o UP WBT)

A team-up that once powered Gilas Pilipinas Youth Women has come back online, and this time, Louna Ozar, Camille Nolasco, and Ashley Loon are hoping to get the University of the Philippines women's basketball team (WBT) over the hump.

Loon, a 5-foot-7 guard, committed to a one-and-done season for the Fighting Maroons in the oncoming UAAP Season 89, where she will reunite with Ozar and Nolasco, her teammates in the national team that bagged bronze in the FIBA Asia Women's Under-18 Championship 2022 Division B.

"Ashley gives us another option on offense, and more size na rin on defense," said first-year head coach Eric Altamirano. "More importantly, makikita natin, hopefully, yung chemistry nila ni Louna and Camille coming from Gilas."

With Ozar, Nolasco, Kaye Pesquera, Ninay Tapawan, and Achrissa Maw keeping the State U core intact, the additions of Loon, 6-foot Kennan Ka, and 6-2 Blessing Chuole Francis are big boosts to get the maroon-and-green back on track for a playoff berth it last clinched in Season 86.

Also reinforcing the roster are two more one-and-done players in Claire Tapinit from Centro Escolar University and Rica Torres from Rizal Technological University.

Tapinit and Torres - who stand 5-7 and 5-6, respectively - are both guards who provide experience and depth for a UP side ushering in a new era under the watchful eye of a school legend who once led its men's basketball team to a title.

"Excited tayo for all the talent coming in to strengthen yung foundation built by the veterans. Hopefully, mabilis silang maka-adapt and maka-contribute sa atin," said Altamirano, who teamed up with the likes of Benjie Paras and Ronnie Magsanoc in UP's 1986 championship.

Meanwhile, Chiang Kai Shek standout guard Ashley Mabazza, 5-6 at age 20, committed to the Fighting Maroons, as well, and will redshirt her first year in Diliman.

UP boosts ceiling with Ka, Francis commitments

Kennan Ka (c/o UP WBT)

Lack of size has been addressed for the University of the Philippines women's basketball team (WBT) with the entry of a Fil-Am one-and-done player and a new Nigerian foreign student-athlete.

Six-foot Kennan Ka and 6-1 Blessing Chuole Francis have arrived to add much-welcome height for the Fighting Maroons in the oncoming UAAP Season 89.

The 22-year-old Ka recently starred for Long Beach State before committing to play one season for State U. Despite the San Diego, California native's size, she actually also brings ballhandling and playmaking to complement stalwarts Louna Ozar, Camille Nolasco, and Kaye Pesquera.

Francis, age 21, is then a traditional inside presence who finally fills the space once occupied by former Rookie of the Year Favour Onoh, who powered UP to a playoff berth in Season 86.

"Talagang big boost sila sa atin because, as we all saw, height is what we had been lacking in the last two years," said first-year head coach Eric Altamirano.

Francis will join forces with veterans Achrissa Maw and Ninay Tapawan up front, as the Fighting Maroons try to get back into the Final Four picture after fifth and seventh-place finishes in the past couple of seasons.

For her part, Ka will also provide valuable experience for a maroon-and-green side ushering in a new era under the watchful eye of a school legend who once led its men's basketball team to a title.

"We have high hopes for the upcoming season, but at the same time, we know how competitive the field is. So the first thing we want to do is just to compete," said Altamirano, who teamed up with the likes of Benjie Paras and Ronnie Magsanoc in UP's 1986 championship.

Irish Coquia commits to UP

c/o UP OASD

As the University of the Philippines men's basketball team ramps up its preparations for a redemption campaign in UAAP Season 89, the groundwork for its future also continues to be laid.

The Fighting Maroons have secured the commitment of Fil-Canadian guard Irish Coquia, with the former U.S. NCAA Division 1 talent set to bolster their backcourt come Season 90.

Coquia is a 6-foot-1 playmaker who last suited up for the University of New Orleans following a standout stint for U.S. NCAA Division 2 side Simon Fraser University. Prior to his collegiate exploits, he emerged as one of British Columbia's top high school players, averaging 35 points while leading his team to a provincial championship and earning MVP honors.

Turning 21 in September, he will undergo one-year residency before being eligible for two seasons of play for State U.

Coquia's arrival comes just as UP begins planning for a transition at guard, with veterans Rey Remogat and Rain Maga set to exhaust their eligibility after Season 89. After developing within the program for the next year, he will join forces with Fil-Am Joaquin Tovera in a dynamic backcourt.

"Together with our other recruits, makakatulong si Irish sa atin, especially to ensure na tuloy-tuloy lang tayo pagkatapos ng playing years nina Rey at Rain," said head coach Goldwin Monteverde.

This commitment also serves as homecoming, with the newest Fighting Maroon tracing his roots to Dagupan City, Pangasinan. His uncle, multidisciplinary communicator Rex Laguerta, also studied at UP Open University from 2019 to 2024.

The maroon-and-green is in the midst of its most consistent contention yet, coming off its fifth straight finals appearance, highlighted by two titles in Seasons 84 and 87.

Menta to sit out UP WVT season finale

Fabio Menta with Nina Ytang (c/o UP OASD)

NCAA women's volleyball champion consultant Aleksi Lahteenmaki will yet again serve as acting coach for the University of the Philippines women's volleyball team (WVT) in its match against University of Santo Tomas on Sunday to end UAAP Season 88.

Lahteenmaki, a Finnish player-turned-coach only 22 years old, will temporarily step into the post in lieu of Fabio Menta, who has asked permission to take care of his well-being for the meantime.

The UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development as well as main backer Strong Group Athletics have allowed Menta to tend to his health, but also made it clear he remains WVT head coach and may return whenever he sees fit.

For now, State U tries to close its campaign on a high note under the guidance of Lahteenmaki, who had just helped the Lady Knights to their first championship in 27 years.

"We hope coach Fabio feels better sooner than later, so for our last game this season, let's just all support coach Aleksi and the rest of our girls in trying to get us a season-ending win," said UP OASD Director Bo Perasol.

Lahteenmaki has been under Menta's tutelage since the former chose to begin his coaching career following the end of his tour of duty for Finland's under-18 national team. He is instrumental part of the championship run of Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the just-concluded NCAA Season 101 Volleyball tournament, assisting Mayeth Carolino.

Now, he will try to give Nina Ytang, Irah Jaboneta, and Joan Monares a fitting farewell to their collegiate careers.

UP batters Ateneo, sets up weekend duel vs UST

11 a.m. - DLSU vs AdU

University of the Philippines set up a clash for the last UAAP Season 88 Softball Finals berth against University of Santo Tomas after dismantling Ateneo de Manila University, 16-1, in just four innings on the penultimate day of eliminations, Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Malate, Manila.

The Fighting Maroons will take on the Tiger Softbelles on Saturday at 9 a.m. in their last elimination round assignment, with the winner advancing to face reigning 12-time champions Adamson University Lady Falcons in the championship series.

Adamson had earlier secured its 11th consecutive Finals appearance by defeating UST, 3-0. The Lady Falcons captured the first two titles of their long reign via 10-0 sweeps in the elimination rounds.

UP, aiming for a fourth straight Finals appearance, unleashed a barrage of big hits in the second inning and never looked back. Fourth-year standout Danica Aquino highlighted the team’s dominance with an inside-the-park home run.

Jaja Pascual could have recorded the Maroons’ first official home run of the season in the same inning, but it was nullified after she passed preceding runner Sathia Romero-Salas on the way to second base. The two RBIs still counted, as Drel Gonzales and Romero-Salas crossed home plate to extend the lead to four.

After an hour-long discussion regarding Pascual’s play, Aquino responded with a line drive down the right-field line for a solo home run — the senior left fielder’s only hit of the game.

“Nasa padulo na tayo ng tournament, so ang pinaghahandaan rin talaga namin ay ‘yung last game against UST. Ito kasi ang ginamit din namin as preparation para do’n sa last game. So, hopefully, lahat mag-deliver do’n sa last game,” said head coach Ron Pagkaliwagan.

“Big lesson sa ‘min talaga ‘yung mga mistakes namin nung nakaraang laro namin against Adamson. Ready naman sila; it’s part of the game, eh, may nagkakamali. Hopefully, maka-recover lang. Ika nga, you learn from your mistakes, and it’s part of the game,” added the fifth-year mentor.

Generose Torremocha and Laica Atlas each contributed for two innings, combining for one hit and two RBIs apiece as the sixth batter of the Maroons’ lineup. Pascual still finished with three RBIs from a single and a sacrifice hit.

Diane Pasco earned the win despite allowing a lone earned run in the second inning for Ateneo on four hits. Joy Laurente closed the game, holding the Blue Eagles scoreless on a single hit in the final two innings.

Pagkaliwagan emphasized that the key to winning the crucial playoff against UST lies in execution.

“Gusto ko lang makita ‘yung talagang laro ng taga-UP na lahat ibinibigay. And sa tingin ko naman lahat ‘to magde-deliver this coming Saturday, kasi talaga namang nag-prepare kami for this game,” he said.

The Blue Eagles made one last push in the second inning, breaking through Pasco’s defense with two hits and a run. Jeanne Yap hit a slow grounder to the middle for a triple and later scored on a single from Marvelous Romano.

Katipunan-based Ateneo added three more hits, including one from graduating senior Rizellejoy Bulatao, but UP’s defense ultimately held firm for the win. Bulatao and Ashlee Tuprio rounded the bases one final time for the Blue Eagles.

Ateneo, which has yet to register a win since Season 85, closed the season with an 0-8 record — marking its 16th straight defeat.

Casiey Dongallo out for remainder of UAAP Season 88

c/o UAAP

The University of the Philippines announced on Saturday that Casiey Dongallo will be sidelined for the remainder of the UAAP Season 88, as it was confirmed that she incurred ACL and meniscus tears on her left knee.

Dongallo suffered the injury during the first set of the Fighting Maroons' match against Far Eastern University last week, incurring it on a bad landing following her fourth point and necessitating assistance off the court and into the team dugout.

She had been on a recent roll before this interruption, managing a twenty-point performance against defending champions National University.

It is expected that she will be ready in time for next season, which would turn out to be her final year after her transfer from the University of the East.

Head coach Fabio Menta says that the Cebuana's state of mind remains okay in spite of this development. He shares, "She's in a great mood. I'm surprised she never felt the desperation. She came to the (next) game, she comes to our training, still smiling."

Menta also says, "Now, we want to be optimistic. By late December or January next year, she'll be training again. Hopefully."

With Dongallo now sidelined, UP will regroup behind fellow UE transfer Jelai Gajero, as well as through the leadership of Joan Monares and Irah Jaboneta.

Menta notes that the team needs to move forward, adds, "Casiey's a big loss, but the girls understand they need to do more now to compensate," he said. "The girls are ok. They're working and hopefully, we find the right adjustments. We are preparing hard to do our best."

UP is scheduled to conclude their first round campaign against Adamson on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, as they seek to boost their record back up above .500 in their effort to end a decade-long postseason drought.

Sean Franco commits to the University of the Philippines

c/o NCAA

The University of the Philippines lands a key commitment for its upcoming collegiate campaign, as Arellano University high school standout Sean Franco is set to join the program, as announced by the Office for Athletics and Sports Development.

The nineteen-year-old was named as the NCAA Season 101 Juniors Basketball Most Valuable Player, leading the Braves with an near-double-double average of 16.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists, while also being named as the last two seasons as its NCAA Juniors Defensive Player of the Year.

With Franco in tow, Arellano managed to carve their way into the finals this past season, losing to eventual champion Letran.

According to head coach Goldwin Monteverde, "Makakatulong agad sa’tin si Sean kasi nakita naman natin how he led yung Arellano in his last year. Kahit natalo sila sa finals, he didn’t stop working."

The 6'2" wing will be immediately eligible as a true freshman starting this coming season and is set to have a full five-year eligibility.

Franco is the latest a bumper crop of players the Fighting Maroons will have for this year, led by former UAAP Rookie of the Year Veejay Pre and former NCAA Finals MVP James Payosing, among others, as they seek to collectively replace the quintet of Gerry Abadiano, Harold Alarcon, Janjan Felicilda, Terrence Fortea, and Reyland Torres in their quest for a third title this decade, and a sixth straight finals berth.

UP selects Eric Altamirano as Women's Basketball head coach

From L-R: UP OASD coordinator Kenneth Raval and Director Bo Perasol, UP WBT head coach Eric Altamirano and assistants Anton Altamirano and Mikka Cacho, UP OASD deputy director Mo Gingerich

Eric Altamirano makes his long overdue return to his alma mater.

The veteran tactician, who has won a championship as a player and as a coach, has been tasked to revive the University of the Philippines' women's basketball program, as announced by the university's Office for Athletics and Sports Development on Wednesday.

In joining the program, he says, "I've come full circle. This is my way of giving back sa school that gave me the opportunity to start my playing career and coaching career."

After winning the men's basketball championship with the Fighting Maroons in 1986, Altamirano would play in the professional ranks before rejoining the program as head coach a decade later. He would then call the shots in the pros with Purefoods, Mobiline, and Coca-Cola before re-entering the collegiate ranks with National University, serving as the architect of their historic title in UAAP Season 77 in 2014. In addition, he has served as a consultant for Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 Women since 2023 and with the Pilipinas Aguilas in the Women's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League since 2025.

Now that he's back again in the collegiate ranks, albeit in the women's game, he sees this as an opportunity. Altamirano says about this new role, "I've been involved with women's basketball for the last three years and I fell in love with it. There's this certain challenge to help women's basketball continue its rise, most especially, for my alma mater."

When asked about his hopes and expectations are for the Fighting Maroons, Altamirano shares, "Of course, our long-term plan is to bring UP to the mountaintop. Pero for now, we have to continue taking these many steps to get there. For now, what we want is sustainable competitiveness."

Altamirano replaces Paul Ramos, whose seven-year tenure allowed UP to move up the standings, capped by making the postseason in Season 86. Ramos' final season saw them finish in seventh place with a 3-11 record.

In speaking about Ramos, UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development Bo Perasol shares, "Laking pasasalamat natin kay coach Paul for, as he said, giving seven years of his life to the WBT. Because of him and his staff, the pieces are already in place for us, and it's just up to coach E and his own staff to put it all together,"

Perasol adds, "Confident tayo that UP can be a contender in women's basketball, and we believe we have found the right leader to prove that next season."

To help Altamirano steer the ship, he tapped the following to be his assistants, Jeff Perlas, Paolo Layug, Anton Altamirano, and Mikka Cacho.

UP snaps losing skid in UAAP Baseball, crushes UST

c/o UAAP

Games on Sunday at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium

(* – Rule of succession)

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines snapped a four-game skid dating back to last year with a dominant 24–7, six-inning rout of University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Malate, Manila.

After a heavy loss to defending champions National University Bulldogs, the Fighting Maroons finally broke through the win column for the first time since April 13, 2025, and evened their tournament record with UST at 1–1. The tournament is held in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission.

Following a rough start—allowing four runs in the first inning—UP exploded for 10 runs in the second and never looked back, securing their breakthrough victory.

Back-to-back hits from VJ Mangahas and John Mark Natawan signaled the Fighting Maroons’ offensive surge.

Two consecutive walks issued by UST reliever Prince Harry Geronimo loaded the bases, setting up the first run.

Further hits from Aaron Nicha and Eman Javier, coupled with two additional UST fielding errors, turned that initial run into a six-run advantage, putting UP ahead 10–4.

“Yung first two games talaga is talagang top teams eh, pero nakita ‘yung kaya ng mga bata. Ito na, kaunting pep talk, kaunting changes sa batting lineup, kaya ito, medyo maganda na ‘yung naging result. Ang importante rito, nagiging matured na, pero mga bata talaga ‘tong players natin. Pero nakita mo na may potential talaga; kailangan lang nila ng teamwork. Darating tayo dyan,” said Iking Jimenez, now in his second year as head coach.

UP didn’t stop at a four-run cushion.

The Fighting Maroons added 14 more runs over the next four innings, putting the game well out of reach. Javier finished with three hits and six RBIs, while Nicha also recorded three hits and drove in five runs. LM Basañes contributed three hits, two of which came in the latter innings.

Daniel Badrina relieved rookie Bokie Claro and stabilized the Fighting Maroons’ defense, limiting UST to just two more runs after taking the mound. The third-year pitcher struck out five batters in his stint.

UP will aim for back-to-back wins when they face Ateneo de Manila University in the third and final game of the series on Sunday.

“Ando’n na ‘yung teamwork; tulung-tulong lang talaga. Yung pitchers na nakita niyo naman, si Badrina, ang ganda ng pinukol. Yung pitcher natin na rookie, si Claro, first batter na strikeout niya, pero nawala sa focus. So, kaunting adjustment pa, usap pa sa mga rookies,” added Jimenez.

UST got off to a dream start with four runs in the opening inning, capitalizing on rookie Claro’s nerves in his UAAP debut. A single from Marvin Trillana put additional pressure on UP’s defense, which eventually allowed three more runs off a Ybbrahim Degollacion hit.

No Thomasian batter had more than one hit, with Trillana the lone contributor of runs, driving in three.

Four UST pitchers tried to halt the Fighting Maroons’ offense, but their efforts fell short, with Cedrick Marquez taking the brunt of the scoring after allowing 14 runs.

The Golden Sox will aim to bounce back against the Bulldogs in Sunday’s second game, following the opener between Adamson University Soaring Falcons and De La Salle University Green Batters at 7 a.m.

Francisco anchors UP shutout against Ateneo in softball opener

c/o UAAP

Martine Francisco fueled a massive opening-inning outburst as the University of the Philippines set its redemption bid in motion with an 11-0, four-inning rout of Ateneo de Manila University on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Malate, Manila.

The fourth-year first baseman delivered two hits and drove in two runs in the first frame, jumpstarting the Fighting Maroons’ campaign to end three straight bridesmaid finishes.

Francisco opened the scoring with a single to center field that brought home Jaja Pascual. She then followed it up with a double to left field in her second at-bat of the same inning, allowing team captain Nickole dela Cruz to score as UP seized full control early.

Rookie Sathia Romero-Salas, a product of Imagine Learning Excellence Academy, provided the biggest spark of the game. She led off for UP with a triple to center field, igniting the offense as the Season 85 to 87 runners-up never looked back despite going quiet in the next two innings.

The right fielder later stretched the lead to seven runs in the opening frame with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Reuel Caoagdan.

"First game, may mga kaunting ano 'yan, nine-nerbyos, pero na-pack up naman nila. Maganda naman 'yung hitting kaya masaya ako do'n sa start namin sa offense. Sa pitching, ok rin naman; gano'n din sa defense," said UP head coach Ron Pagkaliwagan.

"As a rookie maganda, kasi unang palo (ni Sathia), triple agad. So, expected naman namin 'yon, kasi kung anong pinapakita nila sa training, hopefully, lumabas naman sa laro."

Pagkaliwagan now hopes to keep UP in top form as the team prepares for its showdown against De La Salle University next Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Lady Batters previously absorbed a 2-1 loss to the University of Santo Tomas Softbelles after taking a one-run lead in the third inning.

"Kailangan naming paghandaan 'yung La Salle. Magaling rin 'yung team ng La Salle; although, lahat naman ng team may laro, so, kailangan namin silang paghandaan, one game at a time lang," said the fourth-year mentor.

"Basta lumabas kung ano 'yung ginagawa nila sa training, lumabas lang during the game, happy na ako do'n."

In the circle, KC Valino and Joy Laurente combined to shut down Ateneo across four innings.

Valino nearly kept a perfect slate if not for UP’s lone error — a fielding miscue by shortstop Aila Subaldo that allowed Katrice Ditchon to reach first base. The senior ace still struck out six of the seven batters she faced.

Laurente, meanwhile, retired three Blue Eagles in her UAAP debut, capping the game with a strikeout of Andrea Daquigan.

Marvelous Romano absorbed the loss for Ateneo after surrendering 11 runs on nine hits before Ditchon came in to record the final three outs in the third inning.

The Blue Eagles will look to snap their nine-game losing streak dating back to Season 86 (2024) when they face the same DLSU squad on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Palawan Group of Companies commits to support UP Women's Volleyball

Kianne Olango and Joan Monares with the PalawayPay app

The Palawan Group of Companies expands its support within the University of the Philippines athletics program, adding the university's women's volleyball team as another vehicle towards advancing youth development and sports excellence via its digital wallet platform PalawanPay.

In establishing this new collaboration, PGC reinforces its long-standing position that athletics serve as a powerful force for nation-building as it shapes and molds the Filipino youth, one of their key pillars for its Corporate Social Responsibility.

Such a partnership allows PGC to deliver practical resources addressing the team's daily needs, athlete welfare, and long-term sustainability, allowing the management and coaching staff to focus on training and wholistic player development to foster their growth both on and off the court, as they represent UP with pride, honor, and excellence in competition.

In making this announcement, Chief Marketing Officer Bernard V. Kaibigan shares, "As a UP alumnus and a volleyball enthusiast, I am proud that PalawanPay will continue supporting the team for many seasons to come. UP has always represented the best of Filipino talent: intelligence paired with integrity, excellence grounded in service. The UP Women’s Volleyball Team embodies this spirit. You ladies are  strong, determined, disciplined, and you deserve to be supported and celebrated."

From the team's perspective, they are very much appreciative of their trust and support as a valued sponsor and steadfast partner. They note that "Three years ago, we started this program with a simple but powerful vision: ‘To grow, to compete, and to win.’ It’s something sustainable for our student-athletes. Today, that mission continues to come to life because of partners like you who believe in developing talent, character, and excellence."

PGC has been supportive of the University of the Philippines' athletics program since 2019, led by its founders Bobby and Angelita Castro, whose children are all alumni of the institution.

Initially bolstering the men's basketball program and seeing it grow into its current status as one of the best collegiate teams in the country, they have since expanded their support into swimming and judo, with the former already netting a UAAP championship in the women's division last November.

In addition to providing resources, guidance, and encouragement to these programs, they have also been a key partner whenever UP holds certain celebrations, like their Champions' Thanksgiving Dinner.

In ensuring that student-athletes have the tools, guidance, and encouragement necessary they need to thrive, this new wrinkle in the partnership between PalawanPay and UP fosters a culture of excellence, perseverance, and leadership that shapes athletes into role models both on and off the field.

UP creeps closer to twice-to-beat advantage after UE triumph

c/o UAAP

Games on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum
7:30 a.m. – Ateneo vs DLSZ 16U)
9:30 a.m. – UST vs FEU-D (16U)
11:30 a.m. – UST vs FEU (Women)
1:30 p.m. – UST vs FEU (Men)
4:30 p.m. – Ateneo vs DLSU (Men)
7 p.m. – Ateneo vs DLSU (Women)

It was the University of the Philippines’ frontline turn to shine as the defending champions dispatched the also-ran University of the East, 70-61, to remain in solo second place in the UAAP Season 88 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Saturday afternoon at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.

With Sean Alter and Nigerian forward Francis Nnoruka asserting their presence inside, the Fighting Maroons relied on a strong first-half performance to secure their fourth consecutive win. The victory improved their record to 8-3 and brought them closer to clinching an eighth Final Four berth.

Beyond spoiling the return of UE head coach Chris Gavina from a four-game suspension, the win also strengthened UP’s pursuit of the coveted twice-to-beat incentive by widening the gap from third-ranked De La Salle University (6-4) and the joint fourth-place teams—University of Santo Tomas, Adamson University, and Ateneo de Manila University (5-5).

“I guess ‘yon yung naging effect of it kasi our team is heavy on guards so sometimes, I guess, as the saying goes, we picked our poison. Just like Sean and Francis, they just seized yung opportunities nila to play,” Fighting Maroons assistant coach Christian Luanzon said after his team outscored the Red Warriors in the paint, 40-22.

“At the same time, tulad nung sabi ni Sean, yung tiwala rin sa kanila ng mga guards of giving up the basketball and ball screens or a blitz and a hard show, what’s important is that they are ready for it and they were,” he added.

(“I guess that was the effect of it because our team is heavy on guards, so sometimes, as the saying goes, we picked our poison. Just like Sean and Francis, they just seized their opportunities to play. At the same time, as Sean also said, it’s about the trust the guards have in them—giving up the basketball on screens or a blitz and a hard show. What’s important is that they are ready for it, and they were.")

UE struck first with a 3-0 lead, but Alter tallied eight points and grabbed six rebounds to power UP’s 19-5 surge, giving the Fighting Maroons an 11-point, 19-8 advantage after the opening period.

UP’s commanding first-quarter performance allowed them to build a 44-25 halftime lead. They then fired 13 straight points in the third quarter—highlighted by back-to-back inside hits from Terrence Fortea and an and-one layup by Gani Stevens—pushing the Red Warriors into a game-high 26-point deficit, 59-33, with 2:33 remaining in the frame.

Six straight points by rookie guard Toper Lagat brought UE closer at 60-46 early in the fourth quarter, but Nnoruka responded with an eight-point swing to restore a 68-49 cushion, effectively sealing UP’s eighth win in 11 outings with 4:49 remaining.

Nnoruka finished with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting, 12 rebounds, four blocks, four assists, and one steal, posting a game-high plus-35 rating. Alter contributed 13 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting, along with six rebounds, two blocks, and one assist.

With top gun Harold Alarcon taking second fiddle, team captain Gerry Abadiano added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Fortea chipped in six points, two rebounds, two steals, and one assist.

UP now seeks revenge when it faces Adamson to open a tough three-game stretch on Sunday, November 16, at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. The Fighting Maroons’ remaining elimination round opponents are Ateneo and De La Salle.

Meanwhile, the Red Warriors—who played without team captain John Abate—remained winless at 0-11 and extended their dry spell to 17 straight games dating back to the second round of Season 87.

Lagat led UE with 21 points, three rebounds, and one block, while Wello Lingolingo added 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Nigerian center Precious Momowei, the team’s leading scorer entering the game with 18.1 points per outing, was limited to four points on 2-of-5 shooting but contributed 12 rebounds, one steal, and one block.

The Red Warriors aim to break their losing streak against a slumping UST side on Wednesday, November 12, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

The Scores:

UP (70) – Nnoruka 16, Alter 13, Abadiano 10, Fortea 6, Remogat 5, Alarcon 4, Coronel 4, Belmonte 4, Stevens 3, Bayla 3, Palanca 2, Yñiguez 0, Briones 0, Andres 0, Torres 0, Felicilda 0.

UP, La Salle battle to goalless deadlock

c/o UAAP

Women's Matches on Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Field
4 p.m. - Ateneo vs UST
6:30 p.m. - FEU vs DLSU

De La Salle University held tournament leader University of the Philippines to a goalless stalemate in the first round of the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament on Thursday at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub here.

Anchored by the defense of rookie defender Bacchus Ekberg and goalkeeper Edcel Lauron, the Green Booters successfully stifled the Fighting Maroons’ vaunted attack line. With the draw, La Salle climbed to third place with four points and a goal difference of 0, just behind the University of Santo Tomas Golden Booters on goal difference.

Ekberg nearly delivered the breakthrough for La Salle on a counterattack, but his cross inside the box in the 57th minute went straight to UP keeper Fonzy Gonzalez.

"We know that UP is a strong team, but we're here to play. We just did our best to win na even though most of my players are new, but when they follow the gameplan, the instructions, we can win this game. So, we prepared for this because we know how they play, and we somehow succeeded," said newly installed head coach Richard Leyble.

La Salle will next face archrival Ateneo on Sunday when the action shifts to the UP Football Stadium at 4 p.m.

On the other hand, the result was far from flattering for the Fighting Maroons, who nevertheless kept their hold on the top spot with seven points and a +3 goal difference.

Both sides had promising moments from the wings, with UP’s Cian Galsim and Jian Caraig creating chances, but Lauron calmly dealt with every attempt that came his way.

Florenz Tacardon came closest to breaking the deadlock for UP, but his shot late in the second half also went straight into the hands of the La Salle keeper.

"We just have to go back in training and work on our decision-making better inside the field. They should make the right decisions depending on the situation and just enjoy the game," said UP head coach Popoy Clarino.

The Fighting Maroons return to their home pitch next Thursday, October 9, at 6:30 p.m., where they look to get back on track against Adamson.

UP staves off Adamson comeback in opener

Games on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum
8 a.m. – NU vs FEU (16U)
10 a.m. – UST vs DLSU (16U)
12 noon – NU vs FEU (Women)
2 p.m. – NU vs FEU (Men)
4:30 p.m. – UST vs DLSU (Men)

University of the Philippines spoiled Jed Colonia’s coaching debut, outlasting Adamson University, 66-63, to open its UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Basketball campaign on Wednesday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

The Lady Falcons, who trailed by as much as 17 points in the first half, fought back to tie the game at 59 on a Kim Limbago putback off her own miss with 4:37 remaining.

However, Camille Nolasco gave the Fighting Maroons the lead with a split from the free-throw line before Louna Ozar drilled a high-arching three-pointer to put UP up 63-59 with 58.7 seconds left.

Adamson could not capitalize in the next two possessions, both ending in turnovers.

“It’s nice that we were resilient and we were able to bounce back from the runs that Adamson showed. Kudos to them because this Adamson team, remember, they are a Final Four team last year so they won’t back down on a 17-point deficit,” said Fighting Maroons head coach Paul Ramos.

"I’m really proud of everybody in our staff and players because we stuck together," he added.

With UP ahead 64-59, Cheska Apag launched a three for Adamson but missed; fortunately, Cris Padilla grabbed the putback to make it 64-61 with 13.4 seconds left.

Ozar was tested on the free-throw line on the next possession, missing both attempts, but quickly stripped Angela Alaba of the ball and redeemed herself by sinking two free throws with eight seconds remaining to seal the win.

Ozar led UP’s hard-fought, wire-to-wire victory with 13 points and six rebounds but also committed eight turnovers.

Nolasco added 10 points, five assists, and four rebounds, while Marielle Vingno and Achrissa Maw contributed eight points each.

UP will face University of the East next Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, while Adamson prepares for a rematch with last season’s stepladder semifinals opponent, Ateneo de Manila University, on the same day.

Elaine Etang led the Lady Falcons with a game-high 17 points, six rebounds, and four steals.

Limbago added nine points, and Angela Alaba scored eight, but Nigerian center Kem Adeshina was limited to just two points on 1-of-6 shooting from the field.

The Scores:

UP (66) - Ozar 13, Nolasco 10, Vingno 8, Maw 8, Cunanan 7, Tapawan 5, Mendoza 4, Mejasco 4, Castro 3, Solitario 2, Barba 2, Evangelista 0, Pesquera 0.

AdU (63) - Etang 17, Limbago 9, A. Alaba 8, Ornopia 7, Padilla 7, E. Alaba 5, APag 4, Adeshina 2, Meniano 2, Agojo 2, Mazo 0, Carcallas 0, Bajo 0, Manlimos 0.

UP overcomes suspensions in nipping UE for its opener

c/o UAAP Media Team

Sans its head coach and two key players, the University of the Philippines kicked off its UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the resilient University of the East on Sunday at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub here.

Ramil Bation III, who scored seven goals for the Fighting Maroons last season, opened his account for the campaign with a 39th-minute header off a set-piece, giving UP some breathing room against UE.

“It was a good goal,” said assistant coach Ojay Clarino, who deputized for his older brother Popoy due to the latter’s touchline ban following last year’s altercation with Far Eastern University in the Season 87 semifinals.

“Also, it was a good delivery from Cian Galsim. As long as the ball is delivered well, we have players inside who can capitalize.”

Trailing by a goal, UE struggled to convert its possession into scoring opportunities.

The Red Warriors struck the post moments after Bation’s goal, and the second half saw them launch a series of tentative shots and entries into the Fighting Maroons’ box, but nothing came of it—even with two UP players down on the pitch.

In the seven minutes of added time, UE substitute Edmar Adonis had a free kick that UP goalkeeper Alfonso Gonzalez handled easily.

UE had one last chance to equalize in the dying moments, but a cross from the right flank was not met by any Red Warrior and was cleared for a corner.

Gonzalez then secured the ball in the ensuing play, ensuring that UP held on for the narrow victory.

Aside from head coach Popoy Clarino, Charles Lobitaña and Eric Mink Cachuella were also absent due to their involvement in last year’s incident against the Tamaraws.

UP will next face FEU on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the same Cavite venue, in a rematch of last year’s semifinal clash.

With two perennial championship contenders set to collide, Ojay Clarino emphasized that the Fighting Maroons are not seeking revenge but are focused on securing three points to maintain their winning start.

“Maybe for the players it feels like revenge, but we’re focusing on one game at a time,” he said.

“The goal is to correct our mistakes and improve as a team as the season progresses.”

Meanwhile, UE will look to bounce back against De La Salle University in Thursday’s 2 p.m. kickoff at Vermosa.

UP, NU battle for Filoil preseason crown

Gerry Abadiano

AFTER two long weeks, it all boils down to this one final game.

University of the Philippines and National University dispute the coveted crown in the PlayTime Cares Filoil EcoOil 18th Preseason Cup presented by ABC Tile Adhesive on Sunday.

There’s no love lost between the two sides and that would certainly be the case in this one-game championship duel set at 5:30 p.m. at PlayTime Filoil Centre in San Juan.

For the Fighting Maroons, a crack at history beckons as they gun for an unprecedented third straight title in the premier preseason league which would enable them to capture the ECJ Perpetual Trophy.

But coach Goldwin Monteverde knows that winning it all won’t be easy.

“We know NU is a tough team and it’s going to be a big challenge for us when we face them,” he said.

It’s much of the same case for the Bulldogs, with coach Jeff Napa fully aware of the prowess that the opposition possesses while determined to recapture the trophy they last won back in 2022.

“Hindi magiging madali. Alam naming na underdogs kami sa laban na ito pero ang mahalaga sa amin is we just play our game,” the mentor said.

Gerry Abadiano, Harold Alarcon, and Terrence Fortea will lead the charge for UP while NU will depend on the trio of Jake Figueroa, Jolo Manansala, and Steve Nash Enriquez in the finale of this tilt which has PlayTime Cares, Filoil, EcoOil, Hanes, Bostik El Heneral, Jiang Nan Hotpot, Lamtex Pipes, Smart, and Puso Pilipinas as major sponsors, Spalding as official game ball, and Harbor Star, Wallem, Akari, BDO, Tela.com Athletics, Nature’s Spring, Reyes Barbecue, and Brothers Burger as minor sponsors.

The top gunslingers in the amateur ranks will first take the court in the last gameday of the preseason as the Hanes 3-Point Shootout serve as the appetizer at 4:30 p.m.

Fortea and NU’s Reinhard Jumamoy banner the eight-man field which also includes Adamson’s Matty Erolon, University of Santo Tomas’ Kyle Paranada, La Salle’s Mason Amos, University of the East’s John Abate, Benilde’s Ernest Daja, and Emilio Aguinaldo College’s Nico Quinal.

The winner of the competition will bag the P10,000 cash prize and a gift pack from Hanes.
