After his noteworthy contribution for Cameroon in FIBA Afrobasket 2017, Ben Mbala finally played his first game of the season, making sure that he never missed a beat in leading the charge for La Salle in overpowering Adamson, 85-73 during the UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Mbala finished the game with a UAAP career-high of 32 points on 11-16 shooting, along with ten rebounds and four blocks. He also showed his newfound versatility by knocking down 2/4 from beyond the arc. Santi Santillan was the only other Green Archer who finished in double figures with ten points.
La Salle started out strong, firing from all cylinders and putting their "Mayhem" pressure defense on the Soaring Falcons, erecting an early 29-9 advantage and then extending to as large as 24 in the first half.
The second half was a slight different story, as the Soaring Falcons made sure that it won’t be a walk in the park for La Salle, as they made their comeback in the 3rd canto by outscoring the Archers 28-15, aided by their 9-2 edge in 2nd chance points. They even managed to reduce the deficit to just seven points, before La Salle got their bearings and finish them off.
Robbie Manalang led Adamson with 16 points, while Papi Sarr had a double-double performance of 12 points and 16 rebounds.
The win puts La Salle now level alongside Ateneo atop the standings, both toting a 3-0 record. Adamson dropped to 1-2. (c/o Kim Karlo Castro)
