UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas trumped Ateneo de Manila University 3-0 to get its first win and remain in contention for a ticket to the final of the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Football Tournament on Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
Straight from scoring a late equalizer against De La Salle University last week, Gleydile Añonuevo unleashed a long shot past Ateneo goalkeeper Chelssy Casals in the 38th minute.
Prado, who comes from Ilocos Sur, scored a goal from close range in the 86th minute while Christy Logastua completed the rout in stoppage time.
“Deserve ng players,” said Coach Marjo Allado, who also celebrated his maiden win as the Lady Booters’ mentor. “For the last three games, parang nag-peak yung players eh kasi we drew against UP, we drew against La Salle and then sabi nga namin na kulang na lang sa atin ay manalo kasi we already score goals eh.”
UST assistant coach Hazel Lustan and Ateneo standout Jada Bicierro were out of today’s game due to their participation in the 2024 ASEAN Women's Futsal Championship as part of the Philippine Women’s National Football Team.
Back in the first round, Ateneo beat UST 1-0 off Angely Alferez’s goal last October 26.
UST, level on five points in the standings with University of the Philippines, will take on defending champion Far Eastern University this Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
“Sabi ko, kung manalo tayo sa last remaining games namin, may chance tayo pumasok sa final,” said Allado. “Pero, Ateneo lang yung focus muna natin. Bawian natin sila kasi nung first round, tinalo nila tayo. Now, yung confidence ng girls, medyo mataas na ngayon. Hopefully in the next game against FEU, kahit draw we’re happy.”
On the other hand, Ateneo will face off against archrival La Salle this Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Blue Eagles, who are fifth in the standings with four points, are out of the running in making this year’s final.
