NATIONAL University begins its quest for another double championship today (Monday) in the UAAP Season 87 Taekwondo Tournaments at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
In the collegiate men’s division, the Bulldogs are targeting an impressive six-peat, bringing them one step closer to matching the UST Tiger Jins’ record of seven consecutive titles from Seasons 65 to 71 (2002–2008).
Under the guidance of head coach Carlos Padilla, the Bulldogs boast a powerhouse lineup for their title defense.
Reigning MVP and featherweight standout Nuisar Lao returns for his third year, joined by seasoned competitors Sturdy Gabuena and Carl Ayaton.
Adding to their depth is UAAP Season 86 Juniors MVP Melbourne Lustado, who is poised to make an impact in the collegiate ranks.
NU kicks off its campaign with a morning clash against Ateneo at 9:00 a.m. on Court 1, followed by a 3:30 p.m. matchup against University of the Philippines.
Meanwhile, in the juniors’ division, the Bullpups, who ended the Junior Tiger Jins’ four-year title reign last season, are set to face the DLSZ Junior Green Jins at 3:30 p.m., also on Court 1.
On the other hand, the UST Tiger Jins are determined to reclaim their throne this season, led by middle/heavyweight champion Israel Cantos and bantamweight titleholder Legolas Peñaredondo.
The Tiger Jins will debut against UP at 10:30 a.m. before taking on Far Eastern University (FEU) at 6:30 p.m., both on Court 1.
In the women’s division, the UST Lady Jins are on a mission to secure their third consecutive championship and their 13th overall.
Fresh off a thrilling finale last season where Angel Mae Lorbes clinched victory against NU’s Aila Calip in the decisive match, UST is aiming to reinforce its dominance.
Lorbes, now more seasoned, returns to action alongside lightweight champion Realis Tabiando and welterweight gold medalist Reign Ragutana.
The Lady Jins of UST will open their title defense on Court 2 with matches against Ateneo at 1:00 p.m. and FEU at 5:00 p.m.
The Poomsae competition, another highlight of the tournament, will take place on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the same venue.
UST, the reigning Poomsae champions, remains a formidable force with two-time gold medalist Chelsea Tacay leading the squad.
