University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University opened their title bids on a high note to begin the UAAP Season 87 Men's and Women's Table Tennis Tournament, respectively, on Wednesday at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay.
The Tiger Paddlers, who aim to bring home their 31st UAAP title, scored back-to-back wins to take the lead in the seven-team league with a 2-0 card.
UST's quest for an elusive five-peat began with a 3-1 victory against Adamson University and a dominating 3-0 win against Far Eastern University.
Season 85 top rookie Eljay Tormis shone bright for the defending champions by sweeping his two assignments.
After Tiger Paddler Ray Manlapaz dropped their first singles match, Tormis made quick work of Adamson's Amiel Sumadsad, 11-6, 11-4, 11-8. The national team upstart concluded the day with a 11-9, 11-6, 11-3 sweep of Far Eastern University's Aresenio de Guzman.
Back-to-back wins to open their Season 87 campaign allowed UST to extend its win streak to 30 ties, dating back to Game 2 of the Tiger Paddlers' best-of-three finals against National University last November 20, 2019 (Season 82).
De La Salle University and University of the Philippines join UST at first place with respective 2-0 cards, while Ateneo de Manila University sits at solo third place with an even 1-1 record.
On the other hand, Far Eastern University also secured an unblemished 2-0 slate to lead the pack in the women's division.
The Lady Paddlers chase for their first title since Season 73 in 2010 was off to a blazing start by overcoming Adamson and stunning reigning champion De La Salle University.
Sophomore player Shairah Gabisay played a crucial role for FEU by winning both her singles matches.
The UST high product trounced Adamson's Trinthel Calucin, 13-11, 11-8, 11-7, before finishing off La Salle with a 11-9, 6-11, 16-14, 12-10 beating of Kyla Bernaldez.
UST also ended the day with a 2-0 slate for joint-first place, while Ateneo, La Salle, and UE shared second place with respective 1-1 records.
The first round of eliminations will go on tomorrow at the same Pasay venue.
