Far Eastern University charged to the Final Four after defeating Ateneo de Manila University, 1-0, in the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Football Tournament on Thursday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

The win put the Tamaraws in second place with 20 points and a +18 goal difference, inching closer to the top-ranked Blue Eagles, who are still at 24 points on +20 goal difference.

With the first half threatening to end in a stalemate, Ace Amita opened the scoring for FEU, tapping in a cross from Khent Valenzuela in the 41st minute.

Season 85 champions Ateneo, which took the first-round win, 2-1, on October 6, was hungry to exact revenge after that deflating defeat.

Well the most important thing now that we already qualified for the final four so the first objective is done. It’s always important for the team to win matches. We had four matches in arow without conceding any goal. So I think we’re in a good way competing in the next matches and we’re already ready for the final four,” said FEU head coach Roman Oliver.

Surprisingly, it was second-stringer Carlo Hulagno, who played a tight defense for FEU against the likes of Dov Cariño and Leo Maquiling.

This kind of big match he only had to play for thirty minutes and defending one goal. His aptitude, his performance, how he recovered the ball, and how he played was amazing.” Oliver added.

With their defense working for them, the Tamaraws tried for a second goal, from rookie Theo Libarnes in the 80th minute but Ateneo’ backline was quick to mark him.

FEU will face on  De La Salle on Sunday at 4pm at the UP Football field.

Meanwhile, Ateneo had a chance to equalize by a cross from Cariño that found Fernando Roxas from up-close for a shot, but it was eventually cleared by Mon Diansuy in the 57th minute.

Unconverted set pieces  were not on their side and with the Tamaraws marking Dov Carino, the team had a hard time to find a breakthrough.

The Katipunan squad was handed their second loss of the season but still remain on top of the standings with 24 points and a plus-19 goal difference.

Ateneo will try to seek a bounce back win  against the University of the East Thursday at 2 pm.
