FAR Eastern University reclaimed second place with a 5-0 win over University of the East Thursday night in the UAAP Season 87 men's football tournament at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
It was the Tamaraws' second consecutive clean sheet in the second round to solidify their hold of the No. 2 spot and have scored a combined 11 goals in the last two matches. FEU was coming off from a 6-0 rout of Adamson University last Sunday.
"Well at the end they give you the same for a 1-0 or 5-0 win for sure it's better to get as much goals as possible the important thing is that we get 16 points which means we are very very close to being in the final four and we’re very happy about it," said Tamaraws coach Roman Oliver.
Three clear of defending champion and third-running University of the Philippines, FEU remained five off league-leading Ateneo.
Theo Libarnes beat John Sumamoy to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute, the Tamaraw rookie's third goal of the season.
Eugene Arriola then doubled FEU's lead in the 37th minute with a well-taken free kick.
Selwyn Mamon headed home in the 74th minute from a well-crafted Tamaraws set piece.
Substitute McJay Neniel, with a beautiful one-touch, struck in the 89th minute and Karl Absalon produced a stoppage-time goal that wrapped up FEU's dominance.
"It's about teamwork we are the only team with different goalscorers, so this is very important this is going to give us more chances of scoring more goals and winning matches so this a very good thing and I’m happy. And I don’t care who scored as long as the team scored the goal," Oliver said.
The Red Warriors, meanwhile, remained at seven points in sixth spot. UE is four off the fourth-running University of Santo Tomas.
FEU will have a week-long break before facing UST on Thursday.
