University of Santo Tomas' bid for a second straight 'golden double' is off to a rousing start, taking home twin 2-0 win-loss cards to open the UAAP Season 87 High School Girls' and Boys' Table Tennis Tournaments on Tuesday at the the Ayala Malls Manila Bay.

The Junior Lady Paddlers kickstarted their 'three-peat' campaign in dominant fashion with identical 3-1 wins against Ateneo de Manila University and Adamson University.

Reigning MVP J-An Sanchez played a vital role for the reigning champions by sweeping both her singles matches.

Sanchez snagged a rousing 11-1, 11-4, 11-6 win against Ateneo's Shannen Lupena before ending the day with a 11-9, 11-7, 11-8 victory against Adamson's Mariel Robles. This allowed UST to extend their win streak to 14 games dating back to the opening day of Season 86.

De La Salle Zobel and University of the East figured in joint-second place with respective 1-0 records, while UPIS split its opening day outings to take third place with a 1-1 record.

The Junior Paddlers likewise extended their winning ways to 13 outings, ending the first day unblemished after two ties against the University of the Philippines Integrated School and DLSZ.

UST's doubles pair of Laurence Cuaycong-Dwayniel Revelar and Anton Bayona-Jhiven Clamucha shone bright for the Tiger Paddlers by overcoming both doubles assignments.

Cuaycong and Revelar trounced the UPIS duo of Antonio Ignacio and Ziv Pupos, 11-3, 11-3, 12-10, before Bayona and Clamucha's 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 whipping of DLSZ's Jhon Felipe and Christian Ramos.

Adamson and University of the East ended the day with identical 1-0 cards to take a share for second place, while UPIS settled for third place with a 1-1 slate.

Day 2 of the first round resumes tomorrow at the same venue.
