High Speed Hitters to showcase ‘Pusong PLDT’ more, come back stronger in new PVL season

With the start of the current 2024 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference, the PLDT High Speed Hitters seek to uphold the "Pusong PLDT" theme.

So far, this has been affirmed early on, with consecutive wins against NXLED and Galeries to kickoff their campaign.

Mika Reyes shares about their outlook for this conference, "We are all still proud and motivated. When we talk, it’s mostly about how we can improve our game from the previous conference."

Team captain Kath Arado adds, "After nung nangyari sa amin last conference, siguro mas masasabi ko na mas tumibay yung bond namin as a team. Ang mindset ko kasi palagi, dapat every training lagi kong ibigay yung 100% ko para pagdating sa actual games, sanay yung katawan at isip ko sa fan pressure at hirap dahil alam kong lahat ng team, pinaghahandaan palagi ang bawat game."

Volleyball fans would recall about the manner of the High Speed Hitters' exit in the previous conference, and the team has moved on from it and has exerted its focus towards being one of the best in the current stint. Such resilience would be considered as an affirmation of the Pusong PLDT philosophy.

Reyes notes about this, "We’ve got a solid team, and we’re putting in the work every day. We’re focused on one game at a time, but we believe we can go far if we keep improving and stick to our game plan."

One cannot go with just the heart alone, but when steered with a system, it can help get you further. In PLDT's case, it rests on the shoulders of Rald Ricafort, who will be marking his second anniversary with the team this coming January.

About their staff, Savi Davison says, "Coach Rald and the rest of the staff have created a system that works for us... As athletes, we must trust that system and fully commit to the process to perfect it. The coaches work to identify aspects of our game that can be improved and show us how to apply those improvements by simulating game-time situations and creating pressure."

Davison, an University of Oklahoma alumna, has returned to action after sitting out the last conference due to an issue with her left knee.

The Speed Hitters are very much appreciative of the support they have been receiving from both management and especially from the fans.

Reyes notes about the former, "Management has been great in supporting our training and making sure we have what we need."

As for the latter, their loyalty and passion from the game is what lifts the team's spirit.

"To the fans, no words can express my gratitude and happiness tuwing nakakasama namin kayo sa games namin. Hindi man tayo kasing dami nila pero para sa amin, kayo ang the best fans," said Arado.

"Thank you for always supporting us! Your energy and belief in us make a huge difference, and we feel it every time we play. Keep cheering us on, and we’ll keep pushing to make you proud," said Reyes.

"I believe that PLDT is capable of winning it all. Overall, we have all the support needed to win, we just need to ensure that we continue to play with intention, grit, and maybe a little bit of attitude. I am super excited to see how this conference turns out for us, hopefully in our favor! We cannot wait to see you all in our games and show you what we have been working on!,” shares Davison.

UST sends UE at cusp of elimination

University of the East revived its Final Four hopes following a 3-3 stalemate with fourth-running University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Football Tournament on Thursday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

The Red Warriors rose to eight points and -15 goal difference, just seven points behind the Golden Booters’ 15 markers and 0 GD. Both teams still have two matches left in their eliminations schedule.

Actually, I’m proud of these players (and) proud of my team. In spite of the fact of not having enough facilities, this team will really train on a regular basis. But you know, in the game, they showed their heart and their pride,” said UE coach Frank Muescan.

Edmar Adonis’ cross met Jerome Abarca for a long-range goal in the second minute, setting a dream start for UE, but UST answered with three unanswered goals.

Chris Valderama scored at the 27th minute before Kyler Escobar fired twice as the Golden Booters suddenly found themselves with a two-goal cushion.

UE’s chances as the match progressed eventually turned into back-to-back goals bridging the interval. UST goalkeeper Miguel Abada tried to save an initial attempt on the counterattack, but the ball bounced off his right hand. Eldrin Madrid was there on the rebound and headed the ball into the goal for the Red Warriors’ second.

In the second half, the two squads figured in a back-and-forth action until the Red Warriors was given a kick from the penalty spot, which Edmar Adonis turned into the equalizer at the 77th minute.

Multiple chances for a winner went begging for UE, including a Keith Hermoso shot in stoppage time, but his shot hit the near post.

Actually, UE is a future team. I've been with them for like 10 months and I’m looking forward for them in the next season and the rest of the season to come. Ito mag e-excel to,” Muescan added.

The Red Warriors will have their hands full against league-leading Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles on Thursday.

UST’s day further went south as John Mark Garcia was sent off in the 82nd minute with two yellow cards in the match.

The Golden Booters will face the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on Sunday.

MACKY Tobias struck as University of the Philippines defeated a strong-willed Adamson University 1-0 in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament on Thursday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

Tobias, who scored the championship-sealing penalty kick in the Season 86 final against Far Eastern University, unleashed a powerful shot that initially hit the post before crossing the line in the 44th minute of the match.

Despite the victory, Clarino still wants UP to keep on pushing to boost its momentum as the season reaches its climax, especially since he felt that the Fighting Maroons were underwhelming against the Soaring Falcons.

The goal is to set high standards,” said UP Coach Popoy Clarino. “If we want to defend our title, we have to wake up and put our feet on the ground and work as hard as we can.”

Before Tobias struck, Soaring Falcons goalkeeper Christian Jed Lauron kept the defending champions at bay by denying the likes of Ramil Bation III, Joseph Garces and Viggo Herce.

It was a similar story in the second half as Lauron performed multiple saves to keep Adamson in the game. Lee Christian Hayahay, Pius Marcus Cueno and Prince Baculot all had chances to equalize for the Soaring Falcons but none found the net.

Adamson had a late free kick near the end of the match, which was eventually saved by UP goalkeeper Chevey Deo Celeste to claim the three points.

Fantastic si Lauron,” said Clarino. “He played very well. I think he made some crucial saves — top class saves — and we have to give him credit for that.”

The result elevated the Fighting Maroons to second in the standings with 19 points and a plus-10 goal difference, which allowed them to earn at least a playoff for a Final Four ticket.

Now on a four-match winning streak, UP will try to seal a Final Four ticket against University of Santo Tomas this Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

After absorbing a second straight loss, the Soaring Falcons remained bottom of the standings with three points and a -26 GD. Adamson faces Ateneo de Manila University this Thursday at 2 p.m. and will close its campaign against University of the East on December 1 at 2 p.m.

Harold Alarcon erupted in a career-high performance to lead University of the Philippines past struggling University of the East, 77-67, and into the Final Four of the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Tournament with momentum on Wednesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Scoring a scorching 33 points, Alarcon fueled UP's back-to-back wins to close the eliminations as the second seed with an 11-3 record, just shy of their 12-2 campaign last season.

His output tied the season-best mark set by reigning MVP Kevin Quiambao of De La Salle University last October 26 against Ateneo.

Siguro tsamba lang ‘yon. Parang yung defense, pag binibigay sakin na ganon na free at libre, kinukuha ko naman. Pag nakikita ko na nasshoot, tinatry ko pa rin at baka mashoot ulit. Buti nasshoot ulit mga tira ko,” the 22-year-old guard from Silay City said.

The Red Warriors’ hopes of securing a Final Four spot outright were dashed as they absorbed their fifth straight loss, falling to a 6-8 record.

Despite their struggles, UE still has a slim chance to force a playoff for the fourth seed if Ateneo defeats Adamson University on Saturday.

UE briefly narrowed the gap to 59-57 with 6:42 left after a three-pointer from Jack Cruz-Dumont.

However, UP countered with a decisive run led by Alarcon’s back-to-back triples, a layup from Francis Lopez, and free throws from JD Cagulangan, establishing a commanding 70-60 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

Although Rainer Maga’s late triple provided a glimmer of hope for UE, costly errors and missed opportunities sealed their fate.

Alarcon put the finishing touches on UP's 11th win with a pair of clutch jumpers in the final minute.

The Fighting Maroons continued their dominance over the Red Warriors, whom they defeated 81-71 in the first round last September 14.

They extended their head-to-head winning streak against UE to 12 games, a streak that began in Season 81.

Coincidentally, the last time that a UP player scored 30 or more points was also in Season 81, when Juan Gomez de Liano fired out 30 points in the Final Four against Adamson.

Everytime that you enter the Final Four with two straight wins, our confidence should be there. But, as cliche as it sounds, we’re gonna take this one practice at a time. Just like any other loss where in you’re gonna have to move forward and forget about it and learn from your mistakes, same thing for a win,” UP assistant coach Christian Luanzon said.

Quentin Millora-Brown achieved a double-double performance with 16 points and 12 rebounds to go along with two assists and two blocks. Despite being limited to four points on 1-of-11 shooting, Cagulangan still contributed nine assists, five rebounds, and one steal.

Lopez also only tallied four points but grabbed seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.

With a twice-to-beat advantage, UP now turns its attention to its semifinal matchup against the third-seeded University of Santo Tomas, with the schedule yet to be announced.

Jack Cruz-Dumont paced UE in the loss with 14 points, four assists, four steals, and three rebounds, while Momowei tallied a double-double performance with 11 points and 12 rebounds to go along with one assist and one steal in his return after serving a one-game suspension.

Maga also scored 11 points to go along with one assist and one block, while John Abate chipped in eight points, one rebound, and one assist.

The Scores:

UP (77) - Alarcon 33, Millora-Brown 16, Cagulangan 4, Lopez 4, Torres 4, Abadiano 4, Fortea 4, Briones 3, Ududo 2, Torculas 2, Bayla 1, Felicilda 9, Belmonte 0, Stevens 0.

Ateneo de Manila University leaned on the triple-double of Zane Kallos to arrest a two-game skid, while Jhon Canapi’s 38-point explosion allowed University of Santo Tomas to solidify its hold on solo third place in the UAAP Season 87 Junior High School Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Kallos, the division’s MVP frontrunner, tallied the first triple-double of the season with 25 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists to lead the Blue Eagles to a hardfought 74-65 victory against archrivals DLSZ Junior Archers.

On the other hand, Canapi reset his own tournament scoring record with 38 points on 14-of-24 from the field (7-of-14 from beyond the arc) to go along with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals as the Tiger Cubs notched their fourth win in five games with a dominant 82-65 win against the Adamson Baby Falcons.

He previously set the feat with 35 points in UST’s 100-77 first-round win against Ateneo last September 11.

With the win, Ateneo kept its Final Four bid in play by improving to a 5-6 record for a share of fourth place in the standings alongside DLSZ.

His triple-double is an indication of the well-roundedness of his game. He’s not just a scorer, he can pass [and] rebound. He is the glue in our team, especially today, he makes sure everyone is in line with our vision and also being the captain, so ano pa hihingin namin?” Blue Eagles head coach Reggie Aromin said.

Ateneo turned a 26-20 second quarter lead to a game-high 21-point advantage at the half, 45-24, courtesy of a late 19-4 run powered by Kallos, Sky Jazul, YJ Lacsamana, JD Juangco, and Domeng Ngo.

The Junior Archers rallied back from 18 points down to convert a 60-42 deficit to a 70-62 contest after three charities from Jayden Centeno with 1:08 left, but Kallos responded with a dagger and-one layup to dash DLSZ’s comeback aspirations.

Jazul ended the day with 22 points (16 in the first half) to go along with three rebounds, two steals, and one assist, while an under-the-weather Lacsamana still contributed seven points and 20 rebounds.

Meanwhile, UST’s second straight win allowed the 8-4 Tiger Cubs to create significant distance from the Junior Archers and the Blue Eagles who have twin 5-6 slates.

The win also allowed UST to send Adamson to the brink of elimination, who holds a 2-9 record with three games remaining.

Back-to-back layups from Tiger Cubs duo Andwele Cabanero and Jhon Canapi capped UST’s 9-3 run to close the third frame, sending the Baby Falcons down a 62-46 hole heading into the payoff period.

Canapi then sealed UST’s eighth win in 12 outings with an inside hit and a four-point play, giving the Tiger Cubs a game-high 24-point cushion, 82-58, with less than two minutes left.

However, what marred UST’s dominant win was an injury to guard Theodore Lim, who twisted his right ankle in a three-point attempt with 1:12 remaining. He was stretchered out of the court.

Cabanero nearly tallied a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, and two steals, while Miguel Jubilado also scored 14 points with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Dustin Bathan was limited to six points on 3-of-12 shooting but still contributed nine assists, five rebounds, and two steals.

Magan paced DLSZ in the losing effort with 22 points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block, while Melvin Tailan contributed 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.

Centeno chipped in eight points, two assists, one rebound, and one steal, while Josh Apao tallied seven points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

Prince Banate achieved a double-double in the loss with 13 points and 13 rebounds to go along with one steal and one block, while Edison Jordan also tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds with six assists.

Keefe Iledan contributed 12 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists, while Aurelio Fransman scored 10 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

The Scores:

University of the East edged closer to an elimination round sweep, while Far Eastern University secured the second Final Four ticket in the UAAP Season 87 Junior High School Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

The Junior Warriors moved two games away from the first-ever eliminations sweep in the division with a runaway 95-65 win against the UPIS Fighting Maroons.

Meanwhile, the Baby Tamaraws tallied their third consecutive win with a 78-61 victory against Season 86 finals archrival NUNS Bullpups to become the second team to enter the postseason.

With an average winning margin of 19 points through its 12-game streak, UE’s aspirations to sweep the eliminations will now face stiff challenges from Adamson University and FEU.

Hindi pwede na may slow starts kami ‘eh. Dapat we have to play consistent as I’ve said. We’re in the latter part of the season and everything should be taken into consideration na small mistakes would lead you to losing. We just have to play consistent kasi all the teams will fight for their lives to beat us,” UE head coach Andrew Estrella said.

Mav Mesina, Enrico Bungar, Ethan Oraa, and Jolo Pascual joined hands for the Junior Warriors’ late 12-5 run to close the second period, turning a slim 33-26 lead to a comfortable 14-point advantage, 45-31, at the half.

While UPIS trimmed its deficit to as low as eight points in the third period, UE responded with a commanding 27-4 surge to open the payoff period, taking a game-high 33-point cushion, 95-62, to seal its 12th consecutive win.

This win was similar to the 91-44 first-round beatdown of the Junior Warriors against the Fighting Maroons last September 14.

Neil Garcia led the five UE players who scored in double figures with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Pascual tallied 12 points, six steals, and five assists.

Bungar also scored 12 points with six rebounds, while Kiefer Panganiban chipped in 11 points, four assists, three steals, and two rebounds. Mesina, who checked out late in the fourth due to leg cramps, tallied nine points, four assists, three rebounds, and one steal.

Coming off back-to-back wins against the DLSZ Junior Archers and the Baby Falcons, the Baby Tamaraws continued to peak at the right time to lock in their spot in the postseason.

FEU-D solidified its hold on second place after improving to a 9-2 card, while NUNS is now two games behind DLSZ for the fourth seed with a 5-7 slate.

After a tightly contested first half, FEU-D managed to turn a 41-35 lead to a dominant 19-point cushion heading into the payoff period, 61-42, after a strong 20-7 third frame performance.

Carrying over their momentum from the third quarter, the Baby Tamaraws were able to extinguish the late 16-8 run of the Bullpups to tally their ninth win in 12 outings.

FEU-D successfully exorcized the ghost of a heartbreaking Season 86 finals loss by winning both elimination matches against NUNS, which began with a 89-71 first-round victory last September 14.

Duke Santos led the Baby Tamaraws with 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Anton Lopez tallied 14 points, five assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

Prince Carino nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds to go along with two blocks and a steal, while Mark Dulin chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds, and one assist.

Bruce Tubongbanua paced UPIS in its 12th straight defeat with a double-double performance of 25 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals, while Jhustin Hallare contributed 22 points, six rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

Tulabut led NUNS in its third straight loss with 17 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four steals, three assists, and two blocks, while Nick Peña chipped in 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

Mac Tadeo contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Dwayne Khobuntin tallied eight points, 13 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.

The Scores:

Thailand, Vietnam dominate in second day of AFF Women's Futsal

After an opening day of close and intense matches, Day Two of the 2024 AFF Women’s Futsal Championships saw the favorites flex their muscles and rout their respective opponents.

Vietnam came back from a 2-1 deficit to wallop Myanmar with a four-goal second half and a 5-2 win while Thailand crushed the Philippines with a 7-0 victory at the Philsports Arena.

The day began with Vietnam looking to make short work of Myanmar after they scored in the third minute after Thang Hang blasted the ball from outside the penalty area.

Myanmar’s Nang Seng Brim came off the bench to provide much needed dexterity and daring on the pitch to score seven minutes later and whose shot – that rebounded off Vietnamese keeper Ngo Nguyen Thuy Linh – fell the way of an open Sett New Ni for an incredible 2-1 lead that they carried all the way to the halftime break.

It was a different Vietnam that took to the pitch in the second half as they scored barely a minute into the reset for the equalizer. From there it was no looking back Bien Thi Hang’s 1v1 with Burmese keeper Chaw Sandi Aung gave Vietnam a lead they would not relinquish.

Vietnam stymied Nang Sem Brim, and put the game beyond reach via goals from Than Ngan and K’Thua.

It was a difficult match for us,” said Vietnamese head coach Tran Van Wu who was proud of the way his team fought back. “We didn’t lose our belief and it was a matter of executing our offense.”

Speaking of offense, Thailand kicked in the afterburners when they pummeled the Philippines 7-0.

Switching their offense based on their scouting of Vic Herman’s girls, Vietnam ditched the diagonal runs and moving into spaces that they utilized against Indonesia during their opening day, 1-nil win over Indonesia. This time, through pivot Darika Peanpailun who battled the Philippines’ Isabella Bandoja all the way, as well as Patitta Moolpho who sprayed passes to Paerploy Huajaipetch, Lalida Chimpabut and others.

Sangrawee Meekham pounced on a rebound and blasted it past the Philippines’ valiant keeper Mykaella Abeto for the opening score. Two minutes later, Thailand doubled their lead with a brilliant trick play off a free kick when Peanpailun and Meekham looked to crowd the ball against the smaller Claire Lubetania and Hazel Lustan respectively.

Right before Sawitree Mamyalee took the shot, Peanpailun and Meekham moved out of the way dragging their defenders leaving Philippine back-up keeper Samantha Hughes open at the net. Mamyalee’s well placed free kick sailed in straight to the right side of the net with Hughes unable to do anything.

From there on, it was a rout. Thailand was up 4-0 at the half after goals Huajaipetch in the 13th minute and Arriya Saetoen in the 17th minute.

Chimpabut (in the 25thminute), Meekham’s brace (29th) and Nattamon Artkla’s goal in the 39th minute as a late substitute gave Thailand two wins in two matches giving them a foot inside the semi-finals door.

The Philippines had their chances to chip away at that lead but the Pinays were unable to finish.

Despite the lopsided loss, Philippines head coach Vic Hermans remained positive. “Past teams would get clobbered in double digits. Even the men’s team lost 22-0 to Thailand. Games like this are good exposure for the girls. We have to play Vietnam and Indonesia and we will give them a good fight.”

Furthermore, despite the tough loss, it was an even bigger crowd of Filipinos that turned out and in spite of the inclement weather. And they cheered up to the end, egging the Pinays to score.

Monday, November 18’s schedule pits Vietnam and Indonesia in the first game at 4pm while Thailand look to cement their spot in the knockout phase when they battle Myanmar at 7pm.

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas trumped Ateneo de Manila University 3-0 to get its first win and remain in contention for a ticket to the final of the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Football Tournament on Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

Straight from scoring a late equalizer against De La Salle University last week, Gleydile Añonuevo unleashed a long shot past Ateneo goalkeeper Chelssy Casals in the 38th minute.

Prado, who comes from Ilocos Sur, scored a goal from close range in the 86th minute while Christy Logastua completed the rout in stoppage time.

Deserve ng players,” said Coach Marjo Allado, who also celebrated his maiden win as the Lady Booters’ mentor. “For the last three games, parang nag-peak yung players eh kasi we drew against UP, we drew against La Salle and then sabi nga namin na kulang na lang sa atin ay manalo kasi we already score goals eh.”

UST assistant coach Hazel Lustan and Ateneo standout Jada Bicierro were out of today’s game due to their participation in the 2024 ASEAN Women's Futsal Championship as part of the Philippine Women’s National Football Team.

Back in the first round, Ateneo beat UST 1-0 off Angely Alferez’s goal last October 26.

UST, level on five points in the standings with University of the Philippines, will take on defending champion Far Eastern University this Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Sabi ko, kung manalo tayo sa last remaining games namin, may chance tayo pumasok sa final,” said Allado. “Pero, Ateneo lang yung focus muna natin. Bawian natin sila kasi nung first round, tinalo nila tayo. Now, yung confidence ng girls, medyo mataas na ngayon. Hopefully in the next game against FEU, kahit draw we’re happy.”

On the other hand, Ateneo will face off against archrival La Salle this Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Blue Eagles, who are fifth in the standings with four points, are out of the running in making this year’s final.

University of Santo Tomas punched its ticket to the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Final Four after a third quarter storm diminished Adamson University, 75-49, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre on Saturday night.

The Growling Tigers, who finished the eliminations with a 7-7 record, made their way back to the post-season festivities for the first time since Season 82 (2019) where they reached the Finals.

This victory assured UST of the third spot and it will face twice-to-beat-armed University of the Philippines in the semifinals.

Unang-una, yung first quarter hindi namankami nag struggle pero masyadong good start yung Adamson then we recovered. Ang difference is yung second half, we became aggressive, we’re making our shots,” said UST head coach Pido Jarencio, who led the school to the Final Four after a 2-12 record last season.

The Growling Tigers came out of the dugout at halftime with renewed urgency, dominating the third quarter 23-4 to turn a 29-28 close affair into a 52-32 blowout entering the final frame.

In that monster third period that completed their turnaround from a 14-3 deficit early in the first quarter, Amiel Acido and Nic Cabañero delivered eight points each.

Super blessed. Happy ako with the guidance of coaches and management. Sobrang natutuwa ako even though I’m struggling in the first half they continue to cheer me up. Thank you sa UST community ginagawa ko talaga lahat, I stayed for three years. Meron pa akong one year next year,” said Cabañero, who endured three fruitless seasons before this.

Rookie Acido shot the lights out for a career game of 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from deep, while Cabañero added 13 points and eight rebounds.

The fourth-year combo guard just missed out on a third-straight scoring title with his 16.29 points, losing it to reigning MVP Kevin Quiambao (16.64 points) by just six points.

Malian center Mo Tounkara had 11 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks, while Kyle Paranada chipped in nine points and six assists.

The Soaring Falcons, despite the loss that dropped them to 5-8, still have a chance to qualify for the Final Four.

They need to win against the Ateneo Blue Eagles next Saturday while hoping that the UE Red Warriors lose to the UP Fighting Maroons on Wednesday to force a playoff for the last ticket.

Mathew Montebon was the lone Falcon in double digits with 14 points, 11 of which came in the first half.

Cedrick Manzano and Matt Erolon, who are huge parts of the Adamson system, struggled heavily, shooting 0-of-5 and 0-of-6 from the field, respectively.

The Scores:

UST 75 – Acido 14, Cabañero 13, Tounkara 11, Paranada 9, Padrigao 7, Llemit 7, Manaytay 6, Crisostomo 5, Estacio 3, Laure 0, Danting 0, Lane 0, Pangilinan 0.

Men's Football Matches on Sunday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium

6:30 p.m. — AdU vs UE

KYZA Colina and Carmela Altiche scored two goals each to propel Far Eastern University to the championship match of the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Football Tournament and dismantle University of the Philippines 5-0 on Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

The December 14 final will be the Lady Tamaraws’ fourth straight appearance in the big dance and 22nd overall in the women’s division. Aside from gunning for their 13th crown, the defending champions are looking to complete a three-peat, which they last achieved in Seasons 75–77.

Siyempre, exciting kasi maglalaro ulit kami sa final,” said FEU Coach Let Dimzon. “But again, regarding sa mentality ng mga players, I don’t want them to relax. We still have three more games to play plus the final. Kailangan lahat ng lapses namin in the first round until this first half kanina, we have to improve on them para sa pagpasok namin ng final, we’ll be ready and na-strengthen lahat ng mga attacking plays namin.”

Colina, a rookie out of Cebu, opened the floodgates off Dionesa Tolentin’s cross in the 74th minute and secured her brace in the 87th minute.

Likewise, FEU-Diliman alumna Carmela Altiche scored FEU’s third goal of the match by volleying another Tolentin cross in the 81st minute and performing a fine finish in the 85th minute.

Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High School product Judie Arevalo scored a tap-in in the 80th minute as part of the Lady Tamaraws’ five-goal blitz.

It was a long wait with many frustrations although maganda yung naging adjustment and nakuha nila yung momentum during the (last) 20 minutes of the game,” said Dimzon. “After that (Colina) goal coming from the cross of Inday (Tolentin), I think dun nag-start.”

Second-year midfielder Althea Rebosura was out of the Lady Tamaraws’ lineup for today’s game since she’s a member of the Philippine Women’s National Futsal Team that is competing in this week’s 2024 ASEAN Women's Futsal Championship.

FEU, top of the standings with 13 points and a plus-11 goal difference, will face University of Santo Tomas this Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

On the other hand, UP will return to action against UST on November 30 at 4 p.m. The Fighting Maroons remain in third place with five points and a minus-8 GD.

University of the Philippines dashed Far Eastern University's Final Four aspirations, escaping the Tamaraws, 86-78, to snap a two-game losing streak in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Reeling from back-to-back losses to the DLSU Green Archers and the NU Bulldogs, the Fighting Maroons returned to the winning column to hike their record to a 10-3 slate.

FEU, on the other hand, will miss the postseason for the third straight season after ending its first year under head coach Sean Chambers with a 5-9 card, a two-win improvement from last season’s 3-11 slate. They last entered the Final Four in Season 84 (2022).

The Tamaraws’ ninth loss meant that three teams remained in the hunt for the last two Final Four spots - the UST Growling Tigers, the UE Red Warriors, and the Adamson Soaring Falcons.

It was a hard-fought win for the Fighting Maroons, who are hoping to enter the post-season with momentum on their side.

Every time naman na may game na ganito and we had to battle it out in the end makes you proud as a coach. Especially coming from dalawang talo, seeing the heart of the players was great,” UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde.

A commanding 20-7 run to open the third frame allowed UP to cling on to a 67-62 lead entering the payoff period, weathering FEU’s late 16-5 surge to close the frame.

A tight fourth quarter affair saw the Tamaraws’ deficit trimmed to three with 50.2 seconds left after three Jorick Bautista free throws, 81-78, but Cagulangan quickly responded with a dagger stepback triple with 26.7 seconds left to officially boot FEU out of the Final Four picture.

With 2:47 left, Cagulangan scored nine of UP’s last 11 points to close the game to seal the Fighting Maroons’ 10th win in 13 outings. Prior to that, the graduating point guard shot a poor 3-of-14 from the field.

The wire-to-wire win also asserted the Fighting Maroons’ mastery of the Tamaraws, whom they defeated with a 69-58 first round decision last September 22.

Co-captain Gerry Abadiano enjoyed his best game of the season with 19 points, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist, while Cagulangan ended the day with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Francis Lopez also scored 12 points to go along with four steals, four assists, and three rebounds, while Aldous Torculas chipped in 11 points, six reboudns, two assists, and one block.

In his return, Quentin Millora-Brown contributed seven points and 13 rebounds. The one-and-done center missed UP’s second-round clash against La Salle due to the passing of his grandfather.

Jorick Bautista paced the Tamaraws in the losing effort with 16 points, two rebounds, and one steal, while Janrey Pasaol contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and one steal.

Veejay Pre also tallied 15 points to go along with eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and one steal, while Gambian center Mo Konateh achieved a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds to go along with three assists, one steal, and one block.

FEU will miss the service of homegrown talent Royce Alforque next season, who has exhausted all five playing years. In his final UAAP game, Alforque tallied nine points, four assists, two rebounds, and one steal.

Looking ahead, the Fighting Maroons aim to end the eliminations on a high note against the Red Warriors on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the same San Juan venue.

Prior to tip off, the UAAP held a moment of silence to pay tribute to the late Ricky Dandan, a former UP head coach and Ateneo assistant coach.

The Scores:

UP (86) - Abadiano 19, Cagulangan 12, Lopez 12, Torculas 11, Torres 7, Millora-Brown 7, Fortea 6, Felicilda 3, Alarcon 3, Bayla 2, Stevens 2, Belmonte 2, Briones 0, Ududo 0.

The Fighting Maroons led by 12 at halftime, 41-29 before extending it to 16 heading into the final frame, 61-45.

New Clark City to host UAAP Season 87 Swimming and Athletics Championships

New Clark City

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines is set to take its Season 87 Swimming and Athletics Championships to the New Clark City Sports Hub, the site of the historic 30th Southeast Asian Games.

The country's premier varsity league will hold its swimming and athletics competitions at the world-class facility starting this Sunday, November 17.

The swimming championships will be from Sunday to Wednesday while the athletics championships will end on Thursday.

Ateneo de Manila University Athletics Director Emmanuel “Em” Fernandez expressed his excitement about the venue, saying, “This is the best sports venue in the Philippines, and it’s a place that has already proven itself on the international stage. The country had the privilege of hosting the 30th Southeast Asian Games here, and it’s an honor for us to bring these two events to this incredible facility. With its world-class amenities, the NCC Sports Hub is the perfect place for our student-athletes to compete and showcase their skills.”

The Swimming Championships will take place at the state-of-the-art Aquatics Center, where Ateneo will be chasing a historic ninth consecutive men’s title.

The Blue Eagles’ charge will be led by brothers Miguel Barreto and Rafael Barreto, who will look to fend off challenges from the De La Salle University Green Tankers, the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, and the University of Santo Tomas Tigersharks.

Meanwhile, UP, the host of this year’s Season 87, will aim for its 17th women’s swimming crown, with the Maroons’ star swimmers, including reigning Athlete of the Year Quendy Fernandez and team captain Camille Buico, leading the charge.

In the high school division, the Junior Tigersharks will seek to complete their fourth straight “golden double” in the swimming competitions.

At the nearby Athletics Stadium, both the men’s and women’s events will see intense competition.

The National University Bulldogs, who clinched their first men’s athletics title in Season 86, will be defending their crown with standout athlete Tyronne Flores leading the charge.

They will face stiff competition from UP, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, and a retooled UST squad.

On the women’s side, De La Salle’s Lady Green Tracksters will look to retain their crown after an impressive 2023 campaign.

Season 86’s top athlete Bernalyn Bejoy and fellow national team member Jessel Lumapas will be at the helm of the Lady Green Tracksters as they aim to hold off the challenges from the FEU Lady Tamaraws, the UST Female Tracksters, and the NU Lady Bulldogs.

In the high school division, both Adamson University and UST will be gunning for a three-peat in the boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively.

The New Clark City Sports Hub, with its modern infrastructure, will provide the perfect stage for these high-stakes competitions.

UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rene “Rebo” Saguisag emphasized the significance of the venue and the importance of spotlighting swimming and athletics, saying, “If you watch the Olympics, swimming and athletics are the highlights—these are the true stars of the show. That’s why we believe it’s time for the UAAP to put more focus on these two events. The facilities at the NCC are world-class, and we are hopeful that this will be just the first of many events we’ll be able to host here in the future.”

FINAL FOUR-bound Ateneo de Manila University fought off the tough challenge by also-ran University of the East, taking a 64-54 win in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre on Saturday morning.

It was the Blue Eagles’ fourth-straight victory, allowing them to improve to 8-5, still at fourth but are only half a game behind the Adamson Lady Falcons (8-4) who will face the UST Growling Tigresses later in the day.

I’m happy we won the game but also not contented heading to the Final Four. We told the girls we take it day by day hoping that every game would help us improve going to the Final Four,” said Ateneo assistant coach Bacon Austria.

Four straight points by Rachel Lacayanga pulled the Lady Warriors within five, 44-49, with 7:46 remaining in the fourth quarter.

However, the Blue Eagles’ twin towers Kacey Dela Rosa and Sarah Makanjuola took charge for their strong finish, conniving for an 11-2 run that established a 60-46 lead with 4:34 left in the match.

Dela Rosa notched her 13th double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds while also tallying five blocks and four steals.

Nigerian center Makanjuola finished with 14 points and 17 rebounds, while Sandra Villacruz and Nicole Aguirre stepped up with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Ateneo played without starting guard Junize Calago, who served her one-game suspension Saturday due to an accumulation of unsportsmanlike fouls. She was averaging 12.23 points, 6.67 rebounds, 5.0 asists, and 1.92 steals.

The Blue Eagles’ final game in the eliminations will be against the Lady Falcons next Saturday, still at the San Juan arena.

The Lady Warriors skidded to their ninth straight loss, falling to 1-12. They will face the UP Fighting Maroons in their season-closer next Saturday as well.

Seasoned HD Spikers test rising Green Oilers in key duel

c/o Spikers' Turf

Games today at the Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig

4 p.m. – PGJC Navy vs Savouge

6 p.m. – La Salle-EcoOil vs Cignal

Cignal is set to test EcoOil La Salle’s resolve in a highly anticipated Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference showdown at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig today (Friday).

The 6 p.m. match pits the HD Spikers’ experience and grit against a rising collegiate squad aiming to solidify its semifinal chances.

The HD Spikers come into the match riding a three-match winning run, rebounding well from a five-set shocker against the Savouge Spin Doctors. Now, they're gearing up to face an unbeaten Green Oilers, who have swiftly overcome their first four opponents, including two of the league’s top teams.

Cignal head coach Dexter Clamor, fully aware of EcoOil La Salle’s potential, said the HD Spikers have prepared meticulously for the matchup.

Wala pa silang talo. Collegiate. Aggressive. Gusto kaming talunin. Lahat ng kalaban namin gumagaling kapag kami yung kalaban, so paghahandaan namin nang maigi,” said Clamor, anticipating a heated encounter with their youthful rivals.

On the other side, EcoOil La Salle mentor Jose Roque has his own plans. After scouting Cignal’s recent games, Roque believes the Green Oilers are well-prepared for the showdown.

Nag-scout kami at talagang inalam namin kung ano ‘yung strength and weaknesses nila. We just have to make a plan para ma-counter lahat yun,” said Roque.

The Green Oilers have been impressive, notching wins against the Chichi Titans and Martelli Meats Master Butchers, and edging past the D’Navigators Iloilo and the Navy Sealions.

Although the HD Spikers bring a different level of skill and experience, Roque is confident his team, led by standouts like Vince Maglinao, Rui Ventura and Joshua Magalaman, has the tools and determination to overcome the challenge.

Meanwhile, Savouge aims to regain momentum in a crucial clash with Navy at 4 p.m.

The Spin Doctors’ four-game streak was snapped by the DN Steel FEU Ultras last Sunday, intensifying the race for the semis, with five teams now in contention in the tournament organized by Sports Vision and supported by ArenaPlus, Mikasa, and Alpha Insurance & Surety Company.

The Ultras (6-1) and the Green Oilers (4-0) currently lead the pack, but the HD Spikers, Criss Cross King Crunchers and Spin Doctors remain within reach with identical 4-1 records.

The Navy Sealions, at 3-3, are also hoping for a backdoor entry into the semifinals, making the final seven elimination playdates crucial.

Despite dropping two consecutive matches and falling to sixth place, the Sealions are optimistic about bouncing back against the unpredictable Spin Doctors.

With middle blockers Peter Quiel and Nilo Jasmin anchoring the defense, and Joeven Dela Vega and Greg Dolor providing firepower, they set out to outplay a Savouge team bolstered by talents like Giles Torres, Sherwin Caritativo, Neil de Pedro, Louis Gamban, JD Diwa and star setter John Christian Enarciso.

Joaquin Collo opened Ateneo's account in the 16th minute and assisted Fernando Roxas' 87th minute strike.

Cariño, who assisted Collo's opener, found the back of the net in the 36th minute from a Leo Maquiling cross, and scored in the first-half added time to give the Blue Eagles a 3-0 lead. He was substituted in the 74th minute as Ateneo was totally in control.

"Of course we believe with Dov Cariño talaga the way we came from the previous game we had a lot of changes with his position becase we need to take care of him I know some of the school they have plan with him," Merida said.

Cezar, for his part, had several brillant saves in the second half to frustrate the Green Booters.

De La Salle remained in fifth spot with 10 points, three off University of Santo Tomas, which earlier battled to a scoreless stalemate against Far Eastern University.

Up next for the Blue Eagles are the Tamaraws on Nov. 21.

De La Salle will take on holder University of the Philippines on Sunday.

Philippines set for test in Hong Kong

Capellas

The Philippine Men's National Football Team are back in action on Thursday night, as they take on Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Stadium at 8:00PM. Fresh from an impressive victory over Tajikistan last month, the Filipinos are eager to build momentum heading into the highly anticipated ASEAN Championships in December.

My focus is the way of playing, to help the players understand how I want to play, how I see football, and how I want them to perform. I know that if we play that way we want to play that we will increase the chances to win the game. My aim is not to win, but to be very close to how we want to play the game,” said Philippine Head Coach Albert Capellas.

Hong Kong head into the contest with high confidence, having beaten Cambodia 3-0 in their last outing. The home side are expected to be quick in transitions, dangerous on the flanks, and capable of moments of magic — particularly through their Brazilian-born players. The last meeting between the two sides was in 2013, in a friendly that the Philippines won in Hong Kong.

I think Hong Kong is a very good team. I think we really need to put our best in the game [to get a good result],” said Paul Tabinas.

The match will be available to watch live on Premier Football Channel on cable and on Blast TV, as well as on the Philippine Men’s National Football Team’s Facebook Page.

I invite the Filipino fans to watch the game. It’s a fantastic opportunity to enjoy football. For me as a coach, and our players, football is entertainment. In the end, it’s for the fans, it’s for them. I hope we fulfill our responsibility to deliver a good show, a good game that is fun to watch. I hope we will see a lot of them [here in the stadium] and I hope they can feel proud of the Philippine National Team. We will do our best,” said Capellas. “I’m very pleased to play this game with Hong Kong. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us. We are very happy to be here and we can’t wait to play the game tomorrow and enjoy the game — the beautiful game."

Jared Bahay put Ateneo de Manila University on his back to spoil Precious Momowei-less University of the East’s yet-another attempt to enter the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Final Four, taking a 71-67 win on Wednesday night at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

The rookie out of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu first gave the Blue Eagles back the lead with a booming trey with 1:07 left, 67-65, but was eventually tied by Devin Fikes with a layup.

Then Bahay got the advantage back with a huge spin before going for a layup that was blocked by Fikes. However, he was called for goaltending for the 69-67 lead for Ateneo.

In the ensuing play, Rainer Maga got a wide-open layup after creating space with his eurostep with 11 seconds left, however, it rimmed out, leading to Sean Quitevis’ two made free throws, his only points, on the other end to ice the game for the Blue Eagles with 8.5 ticks to go.

There is more than just pride to play for. There’s the uniform that we wear and trying to live up to the standards that is expected of us by our community, by our teammates, and by ourselves. I was just very happy with the team today because they played with so much effort and resolve,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin.

This victory ended the Blue Eagles’ three-game slump to improve to 4-9 in their first game since getting eliminated in the Final Four race for the first time since 2013.

The Red Warriors saw their bid to reach the Final Four for the first time since 2009 derailed once more, going down to their fourth-straight defeat.

UE fell to 6-7, now tied with the University of Santo Tomas for third. The Growling Tigers hold the tiebreak advantage due to win over the other rule.

Andrew Bongo led the way for Ateneo with 15 points and six rebounds while Shawn Tuano had 13 points, four rebounds, and two steals.

Chris Koon added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Joshua Lazaro also had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.

I’m happy being able to make the shots and coach Tab trusting me to take those shots is a big confidence booster to me,” said Bahay, who ended up with 11 points, none more important than those five in the clutch.

Ateneo will close out its campaign on Nov. 23 against Adamson University at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Maga paced the Red Warriors with 15 points, while John Abate chipped in 11 points.

Stepping up in the absence of Momowei was Devin Fikes, tallying nine points and 10 rebounds.

Wello Lingolingo (0/5), Ethan Galang (1/5), and Jack Cruz-Dumont (0/2) shot a combined 1-of-12 from the three-point line.

UE’s final game of the eliminations will be against University of the Philippines next Wednesday and it would be a win or run through the playoff for that last Final Four spot for the Red Warriors.

NU caps men's basketball season with champion upset

c/o UAAP

National University feels at home at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

Ten days after dominating the UP Fighting Maroons at the same venue, the also-ran Bulldogs shocked the top-seeded De La Salle Green Archers, 63-54, to close their UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Basketball campaign on a high note on Wednesday.

This victory allowed NU to finish its season with a 5-9 record, winning three in its final four games. The Bulldogs are also the lone team this season to beat the Green Archers and the Fighting Maroons, who will enter the semifinals 1-2 with twice-to-beat incentives.

So happy sa mga players talaga na binigay nila yung best nila up to the last. See you next year. Ganon kasimple. Definitely, and hopefully, maging healthy kami talaga next year para at least maganda yung magiging performance namin,” said NU head coach Jeff Napa.

NU got the job done this time to end La Salle’s nine-game winning streak, unlike in its first-round encounter where the defending champion escaped, 78-75, in a game where Malian slotman Mo Diassana went down with a season-ending knee injury.

Nigerian slotman Henry Agunanne put the Green Archers on his back down 42-51 midway through the fourth, scoring six in their 8-2 run to cut their deficit within three, 50-53 with 4:38 left.

However, Jake Figueroa and PJ Palacielo linked up for an 8-2 response to put the game away with 1:13 remaining, 61-52.

Figueroa added 14 points and three rebounds, while Tebol Garcia chimed in eight points, all scored in the first half where the Bulldogs won, 38-32.

Patrick Yu and Donn Lim have played their final game in a Bulldogs uniform.

La Salle will enter the Final Four with a 12-2 record, losing only to NU and University of the East.

The Bulldogs held reigning MVP Kevin Quiambao to a poor 3-of-17 shooting from the field for just six points although he contributed seven rebounds, five assists, and a steal in his 31 minutes and 11 seconds on the floor.

Phillips led the way for the Green Archers with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Raven Gonzales added nine points and nine rebounds.

Agunanne had his best outing for La Salle so far, making eight points and 15 rebounds.

The Scores:

NU 63 - Palacielo 16, Figueroa 14, Garcia 8, Manansala 6, Enriquez 5, Padrones 5, Jumamoy 3, Yu 3, Dela Cruz 2, Lim 1, Santiago 0, Tulabut 0, Francisco 0, Parks 0.

DLSU 54 - Phillips 18, Gonzales 9, Agunanne 8, Quiambao 6, Ramiro 4, David 3, Macalalag 2, Gollena 2, Dungo 1, Marasigan 1, Konov 0, Austria 0, Alian 0.

Philippines' friendly vs Sri Lanka cancelled

c/o PFF

In a statement, the Philippine Football Federation, through its Senior Men's National Team, shared that the friendly against Sri Lanka has been cancelled.

Senior National Teams Director Freddy Gonzalez shares, "We were recently informed that because of complications securing the necessary funds from their parliament, that the Sri Lankan football team would no longer be able to travel to the Philippines to play on the 19th."

The former Philippines international adds, "It's a disappointing development as we really wanted to be able to play in front of the home crowd before the Mitsubishi Electric Cup kicks off next month. I'm sorry to everyone that was looking forward to the game."

Efforts were made to find a replacement. Gonzalez says, "We tried our best to explore alternatives, but in the end, the time constraints made it difficult to find a suitable replacement to step in on short notice. The squad will still travel to Manila as originally scheduled. The team will use the time to instead continue working on our style of play on our home turf."

Even without the match, there are plans in place for fans to see their favorite footballers in action.

Freddie notes, "For those who'd still like to see and interact with the team, we will have an open training session on Sunday, November 17 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium." In addition, it enables the team to be able to support the Pinay5 when the Philippine Women's Futsal Team will be participating in the upcoming ASEAN Women's Futsal Championship slated to take place from November 16-21 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
