San Beda beats Ateneo in historic Ang Liga match at Carmona

History was made at the San Lazaro Leisure park this past Saturday, as the newly inaugurated FIFA field at the soon-to-be-completed PFF National Training Center held its first match, the much-anticipated matchup between UAAP and NCAA champions Ateneo and San Beda.

In what was an exciting and fast-paced football fixture that lived up to the hype, the Red Booters beat the Blue Eagles, 3-0.

San Beda skipper Aljo Zabala kicked off the scoring in first half stoppage time, drilling a low free kick past AJ Arcilla.

The goal seemed to have motivate the side of Christopher Pedimonte, as the Red Booters tacked on a couple more goals in a span of twelve minutes. Mark Anthony Magtoto took Jerome Marzan's corner and headed it past the line in the 58th minute, while Marzan himself entered the scoresheet with a free kick in the 70th minute.

Unfortunately, weather conditions forced a premature end to the doubleheader scheduled to take place at the field inside the San Beda campus at Mendiola. Match officials called off the Div II matchup between Perpetual and Ateneo, with the former having held a 1-0 before the field became unplayable. It also forced the postponement of the match scheduled to take place afterwards between UP and UE.

NOTES: Both squads came in full strength, with their respective teams' call-ups to the SEA Games back in the fold (Jarvey Gayoso and Jayrah Rocha for Ateneo, Nimrod Balabat for San Beda). Preceding the Ang Liga matchup was a scrimmage between La Salle and UP in women's football, with the defending UAAP champions winning 5-0.
