Creamline will open the season against Perlas Spikers at 6pm, capping off the triple-header to mark the opening of the PVL on April 30.

Clash of Heroes set

It’s going to be a full-blown war as members of the training pool fight for their respective slots in the national men’s and women’s teams in a one-game showdown dubbed as “Clash of Heroes” on April 28 at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

Former Ateneo hotshot Alyssa Valdez and comely spikers Mika Reyes and Rachel Anne Daquis banner the star-studded event organized by the PSC-POC Media Group and Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for the benefit of the national squads’ training in Japan and South Korea next month.

Aside from the men’s and women’s matches, there would be a Super Bowl-style pep rally where members of the national men’s and women’s training pool would be formally introduced to solicit support as they embark on their journey to the 29thSoutheast Asian Games.

LVPI acting president Peter Cayco said national coaches Sammy Acaylar of the men’s team and Francis Vicente of the women’s team would be at the sidelines, but will delegate the coaching chores to their deputies so they can just focus on noting how the players are performing.

“This is our way to present the team to the public. They are no longer carrying their university or club teams anymore; they’re now representing our country, the Philippines. And our coaches want to see how they work as one,” said Cayco during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum yesterday at the Golden Phoenix Hotel in Pasay City.

“This is going to be a very crucial event as it serves as the basis of our coaches in choosing the 18 members of the team whom they would bring to Japan and, probably, South Korea for training next month.”

National men’s team assistant coach Macky Carino said they will observe balance and fairness in dividing the 24-man pool, which has been training regularly since it was formed and announced last month.

“As much as possible, we want to come up with a pair of very balanced and competitive team,” said Carino, speaking on behalf of Acaylar. “We’re not looking at their names or past achievements. We will be looking at their commitment and what they’re capable of bringing to the national team.”

Aside from Valdez, Reyes and Daquis, also expected to suit up in the women’s side are Kathleen Faith Arado, Roselle Baliton, Gen Casugod, Lourdes Clemente, Rhea Dimaculangan, Kim Dy, Kim Fajardo, Bia General, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Elaine Kasilag, Denise Lazaro, Dawn Macandili, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Abigail Marano, Ria Meneses, Maika Ortiz, Myla Pablo, Jaja Santiago and Gretchel Soltones.

CJ Rosario and Frances Molina would also be there to replace Dindin Manabat, who crashed with an injury in the recent Philippine Superliga (PSL) wars.

In the men’s side, meanwhile, former SEA Games standouts Johnvic de Guzman will be at the helm together with Ran Abdilla, Mark Alfafara, Geuel Asia, John Paul Bugaoan, Dave Cabaron, Lorenzo Capate, John Carascal, Bonjomar Castel, Louwie Chavez, Mark Deximo, Reyson Fuentes, Jacki Kalingking, Eddiemar Kasim, Ismael Kasim, Jeff Malabanan, Anjo Pertiera, Peter John Quiel, Erickson Ramos, Herschel Ramos, John Kenneth Sarcena, Relan Taneo, Rey Taneo and Peter Torres.

Sandy Montero was also a last-minute inclusion to replace Howard Mojica, who joined an eight-month military training.

On the other side of the cage, Istela Nunes is ready to give Lee a stiff challenge as the division’s top contender. Also, welterweight superstar Ben Askren is back and he’s ready to welcome the young Agilan Thani to the upper echelon of the division."

"Funky" Askren is considered as a collegiate wrestling legend and is one of the finest mixed martial artists in the world, seizing the welterweight title against Nobutatsu Suzuki. He will be tested in a lightweight division matchup against "Knockout" Singh Meena, whose eight wins all came via stoppage, five of which came through submission.

With over 70 fights on his record, "Sapo" is a mixed martial arts veteran that is considered to be among ONE Championship's most overwhelming physical specimens, one that can finish a match in a variety of ways anytime. His aggressiveness and brute strength will be challenged against "The Cheetah." The 34-year-old Colossa totes an 8-5 record, he spent three years in hiatus before making his return in two matches last year.

Dejdamrong is a three-time Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai world champion and a former ONE Strawweight World Champion, with over 25 years of competitive experience. Known as a technical striker, he employs some of the most unique and creative striking combinations in the sport. He will face Adrian Matheis, who claimed the strawweight tournament title at ONE: Titles and Titans last year by knocking out Rustam Hutajulu and Roso Nugroho in succession.

Known as the "Soul Crusher," Teo is currently undefeated after five professional fights, the last three being under ONE Championship auspices. She will be tested against Heintzman, who faced off against Lee the last time she fought in ONE Championship.

"Tinydoll" Ishige started off her martial arts training at the age of nine with aikido and taekwondo, then made the move to mixed martial arts, eventually winner her ONE Championship debut against Audreylara Boniface. She now will face off against Jomary Torres, who will be making her ONE Championship debut, after marking her MMA debut with a unanimous decision win over Krisna Lindaga.

Viewing the NBA Playoffs from an international perspective

With the NBA Playoffs already underway, here are some interesting tidbits about how international the league is.

There are 54 international players from 28 countries that are on active playoff rosters, broken down into the following regions:
30 European players, including four Spaniards and six Frenchmen
6 African players
7 Latin / Caribbean players, including five Brazilians
6 Asia-Pacific players, including five Australians
5 Canadian players
Eleven of these players (Diaw, Joseph, Ezeli, Anthony, Irving, Ginobili, Dellavedova, Mills, P. Gasol, Parker, Thompson) have won championships.

The Utah Jazz and Toronto Raptors each have seven international players, which is the most among the playoff teams.

All first round playoff matchups will feature at least three international players, with the Bucks-Raptors matchup having the most at eleven players.

After becoming the Buck to make the All-Star Game since Michael Redd, Giannis Antetokounmpo became the first player in NBA History to be in the top-20 in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.

Dennis Schroeder stepped in into the shoes left off by Jeff Teague, contributing 17.9 points and 6.3 assists for the Atlanta Hawks heading into their matchup against the Washington Wizards, who will rely on Marcin Gortat down low against Dwight Howard. The Polish Hammer is one of twelve NBA players averaging a double-double in points and rebounds.

The Gasol brothers are facing off against each other for the first time in the playoffs, with Pau's San Antonio Spurs against Marc's Memphis Grizzlies. This matchup also features the two oldest active NBA players in 40-year-old Vince Carter and 39-year-old Manu Ginobili. Both guys have been reliable role players for their respective teams this season. Pau is currently second among active players in double-doubles behind Howard.

Tony Parker is steadily rising in the playoff wins chart, currently tied with LeBron James at seventh overall with 131 victories in the postseason coming in. Both guys are four wins behind Kobe Bryant for sixth place and five wins behind Scottie Pippen for fifth place. Parker is in his 16th season in the postseason, the most among active players. He also has played the most among active players with 213 games.

Clint Capela has ably helped fill the hole Dwight Howard's departure caused for the Houston Rockets. Tag-teaming with Nene, the Swiss big man contributed career high in points (12.4) and rebounds (8.1), and finished third in the league in field goal percentage at 63.7%.

The Oklahoma City Thunder features an interesting set of international big men, with Steven Adams and Enes Kanter forming a tag team down low, serving as a throwback to the big men of yore. Adams is averaging 11.4 points and 7.7 rebounds, while Kanter is building a case for Sixth Man of the Year with his effort off the bench. Rookie forward Domantas Sabonis seeks to carve his niche as a second-generation basketball star.

The matchup between the Utah Jazz and the Los Angeles Clippers will highlight the comparison between Rudy Gobert and Deandre Jordan, with both players figuring in the race for Defensive Player of the Year and in the All-NBA team as its Center. In addition, Joe Ingles was among the final cuts of the Clippers before the Jazz claimed him on waivers. The Australian is now an integral reserve for Quin Snyder.

Here are the complete list of international players in the playoffs:

Argentina: Manu Ginobili
Australia: Matthew Dellavedova, Dante Exum, Joe Ingles, Kyrie Irving, Patty Mills

Tweaks made for ONE: Kings of Destiny

ONE Championship™ (ONE) made a couple of revisions to its fight card on ONE: Kings of Destiny today, with both Honorio Banario and Christian Lee getting new opponents.

Rob Lisita, who had been pegged to face Banario, pulled out from the matchup due to personal reasons. Replacing Lisita will be Czech fighter Jaroslav Jartim (7-5-1), who will be making his ONE Championship debut. He has a propensity to finish his opponents, with three submission victories and three knockout wins, and aims to make a dent against Team Lakay's The Rock.

Keanu Subba, who was scheduled to face Lee, suffered an injury during his training camp. Chinese fighter Wan Jian Ping (2-1) replaces him. The "Werewolf" made his ONE Championship debut last year, defeating fellow countryman Bu Huo You Ga. His versatility in all forms of combat will come in handy as he faces the young Singaporean star.

Philippine Football Federation Statement re: Senior Women's National Team

c/o Tajikistan Football Federation

The young and the fearless team, our PWNT did a gutsy job and made us all and our country proud. Philippines will be one of only 8 countries in Asia in the finals of the 2018 Asian Women Cup Jordan. 5 of 8 competing national teams will go to FIFA Women World Cup 2019 in France. We need to sustain the campaign and hope for good results in Jordan. Meantime, PFF hopes the POC-PSC SEA Games 2017 Task Force approve our earlier request to send a women football team in SEA Games this August 2017. Our current women football campaign deserves no less. Laban Pilipinas!
Statement arrived earlier this morning from Philippine Football Federation General Secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes, in light of the team securing qualification to the AFC Women's Asian Cup late last night.

Philippines vs Jordan AFC Women's Asian Cup match details

Where are they headed to in 2018? They'll answer it for you clearly. c/o Tajikistan Football Federation

With the berth in the AFC Women's Asian Cup already secured, the Philippines is set on capping the qualifiers on a bright note with their matchup against Jordan at the Republican Central Stadium in Dushanbe.

The Letecia Bautista-coached side eked out a 1-1 draw against Bahrain last night, thanks to Sara Castaneda's 82nd minute goal. The multi-awarded midfielder from La Salle received the ball off a Patricia Tomanon volley and an Eva Madarang header to finish with her right boot for the equalizer, after Noora Sami Al-Dossary put the West Asians ahead after 55 minutes.

The draw proved to be enough to secure the ticket to Amman next year, putting them behind their upcoming opponents with their tenth point, ensuring an unassailable five point gap between themselves and Bahrain with one match remaining. And with Jordan already securing their ticket to the final next year as its host, the Philippines, as a result, earns the berth as the next-best team from Group A.

To quote Bautista after the draw,
“It was a crazy match. It was like playing for the title. We wanted this more so we were able to bounce back and I am just thankful for the win. I am speechless. At half-time I said to my players that they needed to find some composure. Bahrain also really wanted the slot and we just had to remember how we played in the last three games.”

Those looking for a streaming link for Philippines vs Jordan can watch it from here.

The 19-woman team the Philippines is fielding is composed of the following:

Aira Audrey Alexis Agustin (UP)
Joanna Michelle Almeda (La Salle-Zobel)
Hazel Romina Arce (FEU)
Alexi Nina Arrieta (La Salle)
Zhyrelle Lou Belluga (FEU)
Anicka Chabeli Castaneda (La Salle-Zobel)

Philippines vs Bahrain AFC Women's Asian Cup match details

c/o Tajikistan Football Federation
The Philippines is looking to secure their first-ever Asian Cup berth on Monday night (Manila time), as they face Bahrain in the AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers in Dushanbe.

The Malditas have impressed in Group A, tacking on two 4-0 wins over the United Arab Emirates and Iraq, then just put up an 8-0 result against hosts Tajikistan.

With nine points in three matches, they share the lead in the group alongside Jordan, who have already booked a berth in the finals proper as its hosts next year.

They face a Bahrain side that still has a slim chance of getting through to the next round. Armed with four points in three matches, they will need to win out AND for Jordan to prevent a Philippine victory to snatch that finals berth.

It is those stakes that head coach Letecia Bautista was harping on after the game.
We could’ve controlled the game better and we were a bit erratic early on. We need to work on our passing and distribution. With the momentum we’re having right now we can go into the match on Monday with a positive attitude – but we don’t want to underestimate Bahrain. But before then we will enjoy Dushanbe, as we have two rest days tomorrow and Sunday. We will do some light exercises, have a tour of the city and on Sunday we will go back to the routine.

Philippines vs Tajikistan AFC Women's Asian Cup match details

c/o Tajikistan Football Federation
After a couple of 4-0 victories, the Philippines looks to continue its impressive run at the Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers at Dushanbe later today, facing off against Group A hosts Tajikistan at 7pm Manila time.

The ladies of Buda Bautista scored the bulk of the goals against Iraq within a nine-minute span to end the first half (Hali Long in the 44th, Sara Castaneda in the 45+1st, Alesa Dolino in the 45+3rd), something their coach Adil Qader acknowledged afterwards.
“We lost the match because of the three goals we conceded in the five minutes before half-time. Philippines are a great team and although we lost the match, we are improving step by step. We hope that in the coming matches we will get some goals and points.”
With the temperatures being as cool as it is the past couple of games, Buda made the necessary adjustments.
We have been trying to adapt to the weather and made some minor adjustments in attack ahead of today’s match. Still, in the second half we were able to control the ball but lacked the ability to finish. Everyone, including the Iraq team, played well today, I applaud them – they have improved since their first match, they played as a team today.
Completing the list of goalscorers is Eva Madarang, who opened up the scoring in the 21st minute. The soon-to-be Rogers State University Hillcat shared this afterwards:
I am happy about the goal I scored and helped the team so am pleased with today. I always like to have some background of the team we are playing so I did some research before this match, on their key players and especially the defenders.
The hosts are fresh from a 4-0 loss to Bahrain after opening their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Iraq.

Philippines vs Iraq AFC Women's Asian Cup match

c/o the Tajikistan Football Federation

The Philippines is looking to make it back to back in Dushanbe for AFC Women's Asian Cup action, facing off against Iraq this afternoon at the Republican Central Stadium.

The Letecia Bautista-coached side are fresh from a 4-0 victory over UAE in rainy conditions, which she highlighted afterwards:
The girls really played well and they worked together, that was the most important part. The weather had a positive impact on our game because the girls kept moving, that made a difference. In the second half they were more relaxed, more composed, passing around, and we are happy with our performance. But we can still improve, there were lapses as well. Back in the Philippines we hadn’t scored this many in our games so we were really happy to have the four goals.
Eva Madarang scored a couple of first half goals, with the lethal La Salle combination of Irish Navaja and Sara Castaneda assisting on each other's goals four minutes apart in the second half.

Meanwhile, Iraq is fresh off a narrow 1-0 defeat to hosts Tajikistan, allowing a late goal from Jonona Halimova in the 87th minute.
