ANGELY Alferez struck the winning goal as Ateneo de Manila University narrowly defeated University of Santo Tomas 1-0 in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Football Tournament on Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
Alferez, a product from Tagum City National Comprehensive High School, broke through to score past Lady Booters goalkeeper Lizlie Garcia in the 37th minute to earn the Blue Eagles their first win this season.
The Blue Eagles had a chance to double their lead through Jada Bicciero but the opportunity failed to meet the back of the net.
Ateneo ended the first round level on three points with the University of the Philippines, but in fourth place because of its inferior goal difference of minus-4 compared to the latter’s minus-3.
“Of course, it’s a joyful event for us,” said Coach Bob Manlulo. “We had an online training for this one when it comes to executing our attacking system because in the past three games, we couldn’t score and we couldn’t find the opportunity to have that goalscoring chance.”
“But in this game, we had a lot of chances despite the weather conditions we had. We only had one training day and we were able to succeed in our online discussion.”
On the other hand, UST will end the first round against UP this Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the same venue.
UST thought it broke the deadlock first in the 28th minute, only for Juliana Gerona’s attempt to be ruled out for offside. Jearferlyn Ramos had a free kick late in the match that could have salvaged a draw for the Lady Booters, but she missed the target.
The Lady Booters sit bottom of the standings with zero points and a minus-4 goal difference.
