Aboitiz Cup makes Tarlac debut

The 24th season of the Aboitiz Football Cup is bound to be a special one, as it expands to multiple locations this year.

One such new location is Tarlac, which held its opening set of matches at the field inside the Don Bosco campus there this past weekend, in collaboration with the Central Luzon Football Association.

The event was graced by CLRFA as well as by the local government of Tarlac City, represented by Glenn Caritativo.

A former student-athlete at Mapua, Caritativo believes that this is the first domino needed to establish the province as a football hotbed, having produced a couple of standouts in JR Suba, who played collegiately at San Beda, and Red Sajonia, who matriculated at the University of the Philippines.

He notes, "We just need football fields and events to grow the game that we love."

Four divisions were crowned during the opening weekend: Pilman Balanga FC from Bataan claimed the ones in the Under-8, Under-10, and Under-12, while Dinadiawan FC from Aurora securing the Under-14 crown.

This coming weekend will be the turn of the Under-16 and Under-18 divisions.

Aside from Tarlac, the competition made its successful return to Cebu, while also set to launch in Davao later this month, as well as in Batangas, where the competition has been focused in the past few editions.
