ADAMSON University breezed past University of the East, 63-51, securing solo third place to close its first round campaign in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Basketball Tournament on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The Lady Falcons continued their impressive Season 87 campaign, finishing the first round with a 5-2 record, surpassing their win total from last season, where they managed only four victories across 14 games.
This marks their best start in 12 years, replicating the 5-2 start they achieved in Season 75 back in 2012. That year, Adamson finished in third place after losing to La Salle in the stepladder semifinals on October 3, 2012.
“I’m very happy with how the first round went for us. It’s all about the effort of the players. Kami naman, we’ll just guide them,” said Lady Falcons head coach Ryan Monteclaro, who was a player in 2012 when the women's team had its finest first round showing.
“It’s about how they execute, how they respond to all the things we’re trying to achieve and at the same time, I told them that with the win today, they’re putting themselves in the position to succeed,” the former Falcon added.
Despite holding a commanding 41-21 lead at halftime, the Lady Falcons faced a spirited challenge from the Lady Warriors in the third quarter.
UE opened the second half with a 16-6 run, fueled by Ivy Yanez’s eight-point burst, cutting the deficit to 47-37.
However, Adamson quickly regained control, responding with a decisive 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 56-37, effectively putting the game out of reach and securing their fifth win of the season.
All 16 Lady Falcons players saw action throughout the game, with 13 out of 16 all contributing in the scoring department.
Kim Limbago led Adamson with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with three assists, two rebounds, and one steal, while Kim Adeshina contributed seven points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, one steal, and one assist.
Angela Alaba also chipped in seven points to go alongside four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Elaine Etang had an all-around game of five points, six assists, four steals, and two rebounds.
“It’s about time for the players that are getting minutes to reciprocate it. Meaning, to give back. You have to be a better teammate, how? Play their game in the first half and everyone will be happy. Moving forward, we want everyone to be ready,” he added.
UE, which recently made headlines with a historic win over La Salle on September 22, ending a 40-game losing streak, has now dropped three straight games, sinking to last place with a 1-6 record with Far Eastern University.
After only averaging 3.3 points through six games, Ivy Yanez paced the Lady Warriors in the loss with 16 points on a 46.7-percent shooting clip, six rebounds, three assists, and one block, while Katherine Ruiz and Aliyah Ronquillo chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.
UE’s Jearzy Ganade was limited to six points on 1-of-11 shooting, but still contributed 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
On the other hand, Malienne center Kamba Kone was held to five points on a 28.6-percent shooting, but still had 11 rebounds, three steals, and an assist.
La Salle, who holds a 1-5 record, is still playing UP as of publishing.
