Philippine edition of LALIGA Youth Tournament to take place this weekend

slated this weekend

The LALIGA Youth Tournament is set to take foot in the Philippines.

At least seven thousand fans will get to witness eighty teams and around 1,380 young talents are set to participate in the inaugural edition in the country, which the Spanish top-flight is organizing alongside the RSA1 Group and Epic Management this weekend at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium.

The Philippines will be the latest country to hold their own tournament, following the likes of their fellow ASEAN members Malaysia and Indonesia. The vision of the LALIGA Youth Tournament sees it as the benchmark with regards to grassroots football development in the region, while also boosting the current football talent. Plans are in place for a larger competition further down the road involving the nations holding these events.

Teams have been split into five age categories, ranging from the under-10 to the under-18 divisions, with entries from here and abroad, including from places like Brunei, China, Singapore, and Thailand, among others.

LALIGA's Singapore-based Managing Director Ivan Codina says, "LALIGA Youth Tournament, since its launch in 2021, has been very well received in all its editions. The work of LALIGA and its clubs is a global reference in grassroots football, and this gives us great experience in this field. With this kind of project, we want to help boost the development of young talent in Asia, which has enormous potential. In this sense, LALIGA Youth Tournament is differential for the commitment to offer a unique experience for all participants, both players and attendees."

RSA1 Group president Rely San Agustin shares, "We are very excited to host the first LALIGA Youth Tournament in the Philippines and very honored to be associated with one of the most distinguished football organizations in the world. Through this partnership with LALIGA, we hope to inspire our future generation of footballers to dream big and aspire for greatness."

LALIGA hopes to see the gains made in Spain also reflected and exported onto these youth tournaments. The men's team has claimed the European championships, highlighted by the fact that all, save for one man on their title-winning team, matriculated from the youth sides of a combined eleven different LALIGA clubs, whether in the top flight or in the second division, while also securing the gold at the Paris Olympics. On the women's side, it is highlighted by the recent success of their teams in varying age group levels, both in club and country.

In addition, LALIGA has also established efforts to address situations that are not related to on-field work, from its attempts to address racism both pitchside and on the stands, to its latest initiatives to address youth-level bullying domestically.

Matches Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium

4 p.m. – Ateneo vs DLSU (Women)

6:30 p.m. – UST vs FEU (Women)

IBRAHIM Tarin scored twice as De La Salle subdued Adamson, 4-2, to regain its winning ways in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men's Football Tournament at the UP DIliman Football Stadium on Thursday.

Substitute Vin dela Cruz, with Falcons goalkeeper Shane Salarda fumbling and losing control of the ball, scored on the 70th minute for the Green Booters to lead for the first time in the match, 2-1.

Rookie Lucas Aguilar then assisted Tarin's 75th-minute strike to give De La Salle a two-goal cushion.

Adamson pulled one back as captain Dexter Casing completed a set piece by Mark Ricario in the 84th minute.

But the Green Booters restored the two-goal cushion after Tarin, pouncing on a poor Falcons clearance, scored early in stoppage time.

It was a slow start,” said coach Alvin Ocampo. “We needed the win. They were able to recover in the second half and, with the halftime adjustments, had a higher state of mindset coming in the next half.”

De La Salle is now level with University of the East at seven points to remain in the top four range, a confidence-boosting win heading into its showdown with defending champion University of the Philippines on Thursday.

Adamson remained without a point to close out its first-round campaign.

Carl Mahinay struck in the 24th minute to open the scoring for the Falcons.

The Green Booters had a breakthrough courtesy of Luis Vecin's 54th minute goal from outside the box that leveled the match.

UNIVERSITY of the East bucked a fourth-set meltdown to snap league-leading University of Santo Tomas' streak to seven, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-11, in the UAAP Season 87 High School Boys' Volleyball, tournament on Wednesday at the Paco Arena in Manila.

The win pushed the Junior Red Warriors, now at 6-2, to within a win of the Junior Golden Spikers and the National University Nazareth School Bullpups, both at 7-1.

"Kailangan naming makabawi ng second round. Kasi nung first game namin against UST, nabigla kami. And nung last game naman, umabot ng deciding, pero hindi kami naging lucky at that game," said UE head coach Herbert Dizon, who took over Raffy Mosuela.

The Junior Red Warriors, runners-up of UAAP Season 86, got some revenge from its opening day loss last September 14 against the same squad, 20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 23-25, with its captain Lance Babon leading the way.

Leading with a precarious one-point advantage, the Junior Red Warriors got some breathing room after Babon fired back-to-back kills to extend the lead to three at 11-8 and forced UST coach Clarence Esteban to call for time.

From there, a battle ensued between John Paul Bautista for the Junior Golden Spikers and Babon for the Junior Red Warriors before three straight kills from Christian Antonio sealed the victory for the Recto-based school.

"This second round ang target namin is game-by-game na lang. Hindi muna 'yung buong second round; hindi muna 'yung top four," Dizon added.

Antonio posted a match-high 25 points on 22 kills, including the finishing blows to this contest, and three blocks, while Lance Gian Flestado and Babon added 16 and 14 markers, respectively.

Julian Marcus Dulay outhustled fellow setter Jeff Abalos with 27 excellent sets for UE, as opposed to the latter's 21.

Paolo Medino exploded for 23 points for the Junior Golden Spikers, most of which came from that fourth-set run to force the decider. Bautista backstopped Medino with 14 points, while Sean Cruz chipped in 12 markers.

The preceding result allowed National University Nazareth School to go into the pole with UST following a 25-22, 25-11, 21-15 sweep of Adamson University in a match that lasted one hour, taking its seventh win against one defeat.

A Kalel Ronquillo ace extended the Bullpups' lead to double digits, 21-11, but the Baby Falcons collected three straight points in the ensuing plays. Yuan Mendoza, though, eventually closed out the match with back-to-back kills for the defending champions.

Matthew Abut once more paced the titleholders with 14 points on 11 attacks and three blocks, including a solid one against Arvin Pon-an in that third-set decisive run. The graduating senior also had three digs and eight excellent receptions to anchor the team's floor defense.

Ronquillo's serves and steady playmaking proved the difference as the setter added six points, five from service aces, to his 13 excellent sets.

Ducusin matched Abut's output of 14 markers on 11 attacks, one block, and two service aces, but no other Baby Falcon came close. The squad's 25 errors, especially in that third set, doomed them to their fourth loss.

Adamson's setback enabled Far Eastern University to share the fourth spot in the Final Four picture after a 25-20, 25-10, 25-12 quick work of Ateneo in the day's opening game.

Eldrielle Manlapaz took charge for the Baby Tamaraws with 11 points in two sets of play, while captain Zedrick Calimlim chipped in 10 markers in the win.

Deydi De Ocampo and Xavier Castillo reeled the Blue Eagles, who slipped to 1-7, with eight points each.

Later that day, De La Salle Zobel secured their third victory this season by overpowering University of the Philippines Integrated School in straight sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.

DLSZ's Mario Roxas delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 19 points from 17 attacks and two blocks in the match that took an hour and 11 minutes. Jake Sandrino contributed seven points, and Luis Papa anchored the defense with 15 excellent digs.

The Junior Green Spikers remain in sixth with a 3-5 card, while the Junior Fighting Maroons continue to search for their first win, dropping to 0-8 in last place.

UNIVERSITY of the East leaned on Mav Mesina's clutch heroics, overcoming De La Salle-Zobel with a 79-70 win to remain unbeaten through eight games in the UAAP Season 87 Junior High School Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Mesina delivered in the payoff period, sinking two consecutive triples that dashed the upset hopes of the Junior Archers.

The 5-foot-9 guard, who was part of UE's squad last season, contributed an all-around stat line of 18 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals, propelling UE to its eighth straight win.

This is a good win to start the second round. We expected this. For me, gustong-gusto ko yung mga ganitong situation because it’s another lesson for us,” said Junior Warriors head coach Andrew Estrella.

The streak was in danger of being snapped late by Zobel, as a Jayden Centeno layup allowed the Junior Archers to tie the game at 69 with just over three minutes remaining, but UE quickly responded, thanks to a Jolo Pascual layup and two clutch three-pointers from Mesina to establish a comfortable 77-69 cushion almost a couple of minutes later.

After the first round, sabi ko sa kanila na that the second round will be different. They will be in different situations. Ito yung bagong situation. Naging ready lang sila ‘eh. I kept on reminding them na mangyayari at mangyayari ito so we had to be composed,” Estrella added.

Pascual tallied 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a steal, while Neil Garcia had an efficient outing with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, along with five rebounds, two steals, and an assist for UE.

Gab Delos Reyes was a point shy of a double-double with nine points, 15 rebounds, and a block, while team captain Enrico Bungar contributed seven points, four assists, four rebounds, and two steals.

Without lead guard Melvin Tailan, who averaged 19.71 points, 7.14 rebounds, 3.57 assists, and 1.86 steals after the first round, the Junior Archers fell to a 4-4 record, sharing fourth place with the NUNS Bullpups and the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Ram Luna scored 16 points, along with seven rebounds, six assists, and a steal; Centeno chipped in 16 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and two steals; while co-captain Vince Magan added 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

However, the Luna-Centeno-Magan trio combined for just 17-of-53 shooting from the field.

In the first game of the morning doubleheader, Jhon Canapi's late-game brilliance stole the show for the University of Santo Tomas, helping the Tiger Cubs to a narrow 76-75 victory over Far Eastern University-Diliman, halting their four-game winning streak.

Trailing by five with 1:12 left after a late 10-2 run by the Baby Tamaraws led by Anton Lopez, Canapi seized the opportunity in the clutch. Two free throws and a layup by Miguel Jubilado trimmed the Tiger Cubs’ deficit to 75-74 with 24.4 seconds remaining.

Off the inbound, Canapi, the two-time Junior MPBL MVP, stole the ball and quickly sank the go-ahead layup with 21.6 seconds left, completing UST’s comeback and dashing FEU-D’s 24-15 fourth-quarter run.

CP Miranda, son of FEU's head of basketball operations Denok Miranda, missed two potential game-winning triples as UST avenged its 83-90 defeat to FEU-D to end the first round.

Biglang naging buo yung loob noong last seconds. Dumepensa kami kasi marami kaming mintis sa free throw. Nag-react naman sila on defense, especially doon sa trapping namin,” said Tiger Cubs head coach Noli Mejos. “Sana ganito palagi yung maging mentality ng mga player ko kasi puro mga baby pa kasi ito ‘eh, especially yung mga big man ko. Ngayon naman, nag-react sila on defense, especially si Canapi.”

Canapi, despite shooting 5-of-18, ended up with 21 points, six rebounds, five steals, and one assist.

Andwele Cabanero struggled with eight points on 22.2-percent shooting but managed eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals for the Tiger Cubs.

Jubilado stepped up during the off-night of UST’s prized duo, tallying 20 points, three rebounds, and two steals while Roi Balague grabbed 13 rebounds and two steals.

The Baby Tamaraws remain in second place with a 6-2 record, while the Tiger Cubs rose to solo third with a 5-3 record.

Lopez paced FEU-D in the losing effort with 13 points and 14 rebounds, along with four assists and a steal, but committed a game-high eight turnovers.

Prince Carino was heavily checked by UST’s defense, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting, eight rebounds, and three blocks.

Mark Dulin contributed a double-double of his own with 12 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks, and three assists, while Duke Santos added 11 points.

Philippines seeks bright King's Cup conclusion

c/o PFF

Only a month after facing each other in the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia, the Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) is gearing up for a rematch with Tajikistan, this time in the King’s Cup in Thailand. The Filipinos impressed in the teams’ previous meeting, a 0-0 draw which the Tajiks won via a penalty shootout. This time around, the PMNFT will be hoping for a better result when they take the field on Monday, 5:30PM, at the Tinsulanon Stadium. The match will be aired LIVE on One Sports, One Sports+, Pilipinas Live, and on the team’s Facebook Page.

We expect a good game. We played them last month in the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia and it was a good game from both teams. They were very good in individual quality and had good technical players, but we have a good squad right now, a good group, and we trust the process. We hope to play our game tomorrow and hope for the best,” said Bjorn Kristensen, who scored his first goal for the Philippines in the recent outing against Thailand.

Heavy rains were a massive factor in the team’s King’s Cup opener against the hosts. Such was the downpour that the game needed to be stopped for almost an hour. When the game resumed, the field was still waterlogged, making a smooth passing game almost impossible.

We are a team in construction. We are changing a lot of things in our way of playing. I was very satisfied with our first half that we could handle a very tough opponent in Thailand,” said Philippine head coach Albert Capellas. “I hope tomorrow it doesn’t rain and we can offer a good game together with Tajikistan. We are two teams who like to have the ball, and I hope it can be a very nice game for all the spectators. We invite them all to watch.”

Whether or not another downpour takes place on Monday night, Kristensen isn’t too worried.

Unfortunately we can’t do anything about the weather. We just have to adapt and play the way we have to,” he said

The Philippines (148) are placed 45 places below Tajikistan (103) in the FIFA Rankings. A victory on Monday would put an end to an extended drought for the team, and would be a positive sign to the start of Albert Capellas’ reign as Head Coach.

ADAMSON- 0 pts (-12)

Jan Patrick Baito’s second half-strike allowed University of Santo Tomas to edge past Adamson University 1-0 in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament on Sunday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

Left-footed Baito, who hails from Iloilo City, scored a free kick in the 67th minute, which was awarded thanks to a foul from Adamson’s Mark Christian Ricario.

The Golden Booters had a hard time finding an opening in the first half. Chris Valderrama had a golden opportunity to open the scoring late into added time, only for him to miss narrowly from a tight angle.

Behind this win, UST climbed above De La Salle University to finish the weekend in fifth place with six points and a goal difference of 0—below defending champion University of the Philippines, which has six points and a plus-3 GD.

Up next for Golden Booters is a clash against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the same venue.

Thankful kami kasi yung mga bata all out (naglaro),” said assistant coach Arman Esteban. “Maganda yung response ng mga bata sa talo namin against La Salle (last Sunday). Naglaro talaga sila. Gusto nilang manalo ngayon. Either 1-0 or 3-0, at least nakakuha kami ng three points.”

Meanwhile, Adamson remained at the bottom of the standings with zero points and a minus-12 GD.

The Soaring Falcons will attempt to finish their first-round matches with a win versus the De La Salle Green Booters on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. on the same pitch.

Garces brace tows UP to victory

Men's Matches on Thursday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium

4 p.m. – Adamson vs DLSU

6:30 p.m. – UST vs FEU

Joseph Garces scored twice to propel University of the Philippines past University of the East 3-0 to regain its winning ways in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament on Sunday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

Garces, a rookie from Don Bosco Technology Center - Cebu, scored UP’s second goal in the game with a header in the 52nd minute and secured a brace in the 64th minute, which completed the rout for the Fighting Maroons.

Siyempre excited knowing that we have three points in three games and we really needed to win,” said Garces. “Yung win namin, we’ll use it as a boost in our coming games lalo na next game we’re against FEU."

Earlier in the match, Jan Ceena Donato was quick to open the floodgates for the Fighting Maroons in the first half, scoring as early as the second minute with a tap-in goal.

It was the perfect performance for UP, which played without its head coach Popoy Clarino, who missed his second straight game due to having to take care of his new baby.

He’s sick,” shared by his brother and Fighting Maroons assistant Ojay. “Siguro, fatigue (dahil) wala siya masyado tulog dahil may newborn. Wala siya masyadong rest but he’s recovering. By next game, probably he’ll be there.”

UP is coming off a 0-2 loss to Ateneo last Thursday.

The Fighting Maroons have leapfrogged the De La Salle Green Booters to the fourth spot with six points and a +3 goal difference.

Up next for UP is a rematch of the Season 86 final against Far Eastern University this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. on the same pitch.

On the other hand, UE remained third in the standings with seven points and a -3 goal difference.

The Red Warriors were down to 10 men after defender Mur-Muamar Modin was dismissed for a bad challenge on Donato in the 35th minute.

Jam Rey Mariveles, who scored a brace against Adamson University last Sunday, was substituted due to injury in the 37th minute.

UE will have its last match of the first round against Ateneo de Manila University on October 24, 6:30 p.m. at the same venue.

University of Santo Tomas left University of the Philippines in the dust with a huge second half to secure a 84-57 win in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Basketball Tournament, Sunday afternoon at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With their fourth straight win, the Growling Tigresses upped their record to 7-1 to remain a game behind the league-leading National University Lady Bulldogs at 8-0.

I just told the girls that at the start of the second round we want to be better, we want to be more consistent, we want to be stronger, and the girls did it. First half was a seesaw battle from UP, sabi ko lang sa dugout tayo naman sa second half,” said UST head coach Haydee Ong.

UP was still keeping in pace with UST midway through the third quarter, down 44-49, but the Tigresses decided to make it rain from outside from thereon that broke the game wide open.

Karylle Sierba and Kent Pastrana fired three straight three-pointers while Tacky Tacatac also added a layup to put UST on top by 14 entering the fourth period, 60-46.

Louna Ozar gave the Fighting Maroons some hope to open the fourth, burying four straight points to inch within 50-60 but that was short lived as the Growling Tigresses responded with a mammoth 17-2 blitz to erect a 77-52 cushion with 5:08 to go.

This victory was cut from the same cloth in the Growling Tigresses’ 84-60 victory over the Fighting Maroons in the first round, where they decisively iced the game with a monster fourth frame. They held UP to 19 points in the second half this time around while scoring 43.

Sinabihan lang kami ni coach sa dugout na kailangan namin magfocus sa defense kasi useless ang score namin kasi pinapascore din namin ang kalaban kaya di kami nakakalayo. Buti nung second half nastop namin yung UP,” said Tacatac, who finished with a game-high 23 points.

UST fired 12 three-pointers, with Tacatac and Sierba going 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.

Sierba tallied 15 points, all of which she made from deep, while Pastrana had 11 points and five rebounds.

CJ Maglupay continued to perform well for the Growling Tigresses with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Brigette Santos had a well-rounded game of eight points, seven assists, and six steals.

They also forced UP to commit 32 turnovers, turning those to 38 easy points.

UST will shoot for a home win on Saturday when it hosts Ateneo at the school’s Quadricentennial Pavilion at 10 a.m.

The loss pushed UP down to 3-5, staying a game below fourth-running Ateneo de Manila University at 4-4.

Ozar once again led the Fighting Maroons with 15 points and seven rebounds but committed seven turnovers as well in the defeat that only had them leading once at 2-0.

UP aims to rebound on Sunday but it would be a tall task, facing NU on Sunday, also at the UST gym.

The Scores:

UST 84 - Tacatac 23, Sierba 15, Pastrana 11, Maglupay 10, Santos 8, Ambos 6, Soriano 5, Reliquette 4, Pineda 2, Bron 0, Pescador 0, Danganan 0, Serrano 0, Lopez 0, Amatong 0.

NATIONAL University Nazareth School took control in the payoff period to stave off the tough stand of a gritty Adamson University side with a 76-64 victory in the UAAP Season 87 Junior High School Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The win propelled the Bullpups to their second straight win, opening the second round on a high note, tying Ateneo for fifth with 4-4 slates.

The Blue Eagles defeated the UPIS Fighting Maroons yesterday, 78-60, to open the round.

Sinasabi ko lang sa kanila na keep your composure. Talagang basketball is a game of runs. Dito lalabas yung character natin, na hindi tayo papadala doon sa run na ginagawa ng kalaban namin. At least kahit papaano, nakuha yung mga bata yung composure na hinahanap namin,” said Bullpups head coach Kevin de Castro.

The Bullpups did not capitalize on their comfortable 12-point halftime cushion, 44-32, after faltering to the Baby Falcons’ strong 21-11 third quarter performance that saw their lead trimmed to two, 55-53, heading into the payoff period.

However, the Bullpups waxed hot at the right time, leaning on the heroics of Zui Urea, Nick Pena, and Chester Tulabut for a 9-2 run that sent the Baby Falcons down a nine-point hole, 64-55, with less than six minutes left.

NUNS countered the late baskets of Khyian Jordan and Vlex Azurias with three straight layups by Tulabut, a reverse layup by Nick Pena, and an inside hit from David Sabareza to regain a 14-point cushion, 74-60, and seal its fourth win with 1:33 left on the clock.

First back-to-back wins namin this season, ang next game namin ay UE. Gagamitin namin ito as springboard papunta doon sa UE sa next game namin. Actually undefeated, mahirap, pero titignan namin,” De Castro added.

Nick Pena led NUNS’ well-distributed scoring load with 21 points on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc to go along with seven rebounds, four assists, and one block, while Tulabut chipped in 14 points, five assists, four rebounds, two steals, and a block.

Urea steered the Bullpups’ offense with 12 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and two steals, while Big Mac Tadeo contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.

NUNS’ bid for its third straight win faces a daunting task in the form of an undefeated University of the East side next Sunday, Oct. 20, 8 a.m., at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

Jordan paced Adamson in the losing effort with 21 points, seven rebounds, five steals, four assists, and a block, while Chrys Gomez struggled from the field with 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting but still contributed four assists and three rebounds.

Fongtong nearly tallied a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Kiefe Iledan chipped in 10 points, seven assists, and two assists.

Adamson suffered its second straight loss to remain in seventh place in the standings with a 1-7 card.

The Baby Falcons will have a 14-day break before it returns to action against the Blue Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Scores:

NUNS (76) - N. Pena 21, Tulabut 14, Urea 12, Tadeo 12, Y. Pena 8, Sabareza 5, Vitug 4, Khobuntin 0, Toring 0, Maranan 0, Gutierrez 0, Quinto 0.

De La Salle University accomplished two significant feats with their victory over University of the East, avenging their only first-round loss while also ending the Red Warriors’ five-game winning streak.

The back-to-back title-seeking Green Archers are now the hottest team in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Tournament with their fourth straight win after dismantling the Red Warriors, 77-68, in front of 8,890 fans inside the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday night.

With this win, De La Salle improved to a league-leading 7-1 record, half a game ahead of the idle University of the Philippines.

The players really fought well. They know the experience of losing to UE. We just rekindled that and reminded them that it will take a lot of effort to really beat this well-coached team. Credit to coach Jack. The guys just didn’t give up and kept on fighting,” said La Salle head coach Topex Robinson.

With the game tight the entire first half, the Green Archers put some separation with a 12-2 blast to close the third with Kevin Quiambao, JC Macalalag, and Vhoris Marasigan all contributing to enter the payoff period ahead 63-54.

Courtesy of John Abate, the Red Warriors closed the gap within five with 3:02 left in the game, 65-70, but the reigning MVP took over, scoring or assisting on six of the next seven La Salle points to make it a double-digit advantage again with just 1:21 to go, 77-67.

Ang naalala ko po sa last game even before ‘yung UP game, I just remember nasa dugout po kaming lahat and I could hear the roar of the UE crowd going ang ingay talaga sobrang supportive… Mahirap talaga ‘yun kalaban we knew we knew we really need to come out strong,” said Mike Phillips, who came through with a monster double-double of 27 points and 17 rebounds to go with five assists and two blocks.

Quiambao, despite being under the weather, still delivered with 10 points and six rebounds, while Macalalag also had 10 points.

Marasigan also flourished with nine points and five rebounds in the triumph while Joshua David was steady with eight points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

La Salle seeks for five in a row on Wednesday, 6 p.m. against University of Santo Tomas at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Precious Momowei made 21 points and nine rebounds as UE saw its five-game winning streak come to a screeching halt, falling to 5-3, still at solo third.

Abate had 11 points and four assists, while Rainer Maga and Gjerard Wilson added nine and eight points, respectively, for the Red Warriors.

Wello Lingolingo was put in clamps, missing all of his six attempts from the field, finishing with just two points on a pair of free throws.

UE looks to return to its winning ways on Sunday against Far Eastern University at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

The Scores:

DLSU 77 - Phillips 27, Quiambao 10, Macalalag 10, Marasigan 9, David 8, Abadam 6, Ramiro 3, Gollena 2, Gonzales 2, Austria 0, Agunanne 0, Dungo 0.

Jorick Bautista bails out FEU in OT

c/o UAAP

JORICK Bautista and overtime periods seem to be a perfect match, as Far Eastern University edged out Adamson University, 76-72, in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Bautista, who had 14 points in the fourth frame and extra period in their win against Ateneo de Manila University, sent the game to OT with a top of the key triple before making nine points in the extra five minutes to lead FEU to the victory.

“What I thought about this morning is we’re really like four and a half months i this journey with me as a head coach and we’re starting to see the light of our offense and some of our schemes. I just feel like they’re getting there and it would just take the older kuyas to hit the big shot for us to get over the hill for the young guys,” said FEU head coach Sean Chambers.

The Tamaraws, however, needed to survive the late explosion of Mathew Montebon, who nailed three attempts from beyond the arc in the last one minute and 20 seconds of the match.

With Mo Konateh’s putback off a Rojan Montemayor miss with 30.5 seconds left putting FEU up 72-66, Montebon did not give up, draining a three that made it a one-possession deficit with 22.3 ticks remaining, 69-72.

Veejay Pre calmly converted his free throws in the ensuing play but Montebon came up with another huge trey, cutting the deficit to 72-74 with 4.5 seconds to go.

Bautista, though, put the final nail in the coffin with two free throws for the Tamaraws’ 2-6 record, with both wins coming in OT.

“Sa akin masarap sa feeling syempre dati napagdaanan na namin ito which means alam na namin ‘yung gagawin namin. Nag-stick lang kami, naglaro kami para sa isa’t isa,” said the third-year shotmaker out of the FEU-Diliman program who finished with 21 points and six rebounds.

With Adamson ahead 58-55 after Montebon’s two made free throws with 28.6 seconds left in the fourth period, Alforque was fouled in the next play but missed both of his attempts from the line. Fortunately, Konateh was there to tap it back to Bautista chilling at the top of the key for the shot that tied it at 58 with 14.8 seconds to go.

Cedrick Manzano missed his chance to win it for the Soaring Falcons in regulation.

Gambian center Konateh hauled down 26 rebounds, half of the entire output of the Tamaraws, while also scoring 13 points and swatting away four shots. He flirted Ivorian Ange Kouame's 27 rebounds, a league record set while playing for Ateneo on Oct. 20, 2018.

Pre also had 10 points and seven rebounds, while Royce Alforque got nine points, five assists, and three rebounds.

FEU will look to make it back-to-back victories on Oct. 20 when it faces University of the East at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena.

The Soaring Falcons absorbed their third straight loss to slide down to 3-5, still at solo fifth.

Leading the way for the losing side was Montebon, who missed his first seven shots, with 16 points, six assists, and four rebounds.

AJ Fransman contributed 11 points,  Manzano produced 10 points and 14 rebounds, and Jhon Calisay made 10 points as well. Manzano, however, fouled out with 3:50 left in extra period.

Adamson will look to end its skid next Saturday when it meets De La Salle University also at the UST gym.

The Scores:

FEU 76 – Bautista 21, Konateh 13, Pre 10, Alforque 9, Pasaol 8, Montemayor 8, Añonuevo 3, Daa 3, Ona 1, Nakai 0, Jones 0.

DE LA SALLE University avenged its shock first round loss to University of the East with a dominant 74-46 victory to start its UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Basketball second round campaign, Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Back on September 22, the Lady Warriors stunned the Lady Archers, 65-47, to arrest a 40-game skid dating back to Season 82.

With that in mind, La Salle came out of the gates on fire, doubling UE’s output in the opening quarter right away, 24-12, before extending its lead to 50-27 at the half.

Although UE was able to cut its deficit to within 16 late in the third, 37-53, La Salle answered back with 14 straight points to establish an insurmountable 30-point advantage early in the fourth frame, 67-37.

For us, we’re just looking at correcting our mistakes. Things that we did wrong, the habits we had nung first round, we just want to correct them,” said De La Salle head coach Cholo Villanueva.

It’s like that in anything that you do, you make mistakes, you correct them, and then you build good habits from those.”

The victory allowed the Lady Archers to raise their record to 2-6, tying the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, who earlier stunned Adamson University, 67-64, for sixth and seventh spots.

Tricia Mendoza top-scored for La Salle with 15 points to go with five rebounds and two blocks, while Bernice Paraiso added 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals while shooting 5-of-6 from the field.

Arabell Bacierto and Luisa San Juan also delivered 12 points apiece for the Lady Archers.

La Salle looks to build on this win when it matches up with Adamson University next Saturday, 6 p.m., at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion (QPav).

Moana Vacalares had 12 points and four losses as the Lady Warriors fell to 1-7 at the bottom of the standings.

Rachel Lacayanga chimed in 11 points, six rebounds, and five steals, while Kamba Kone made nine points and 10 rebounds.

UE will next face FEU on Oct. 20, also at the UST QPav.

Lopez delivered four three-pointers in the payoff period including the go-ahead shot from the top of the key with 1:02 left for a 65-64 Lady Tamaraws lead.

Grabe lang po ‘yung kumpyansa na binibigay sa amin ni coach Raiza na kapag open, itira mo nang buong puso, nang walang duda,” said third-year guard Lopez on her outburst of 17 points, including 12 in the fourth frame on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from deep.

Victoria Adeshina had a golden chance for the Lady Falcons on a fastbreak with 16 seconds left but she flunked her wide-open layup.

Shane Salvani added much-needed insurance points for FEU with two made free throws with 11.5 seconds to go while Kim Mazo failed to handle the pass of Elaine Etang in the next possession for Adamson.

Joann Nagma had a chance to ice the game from the line with 4.1 seconds left but she missed both. She quickly atoned for it though with a steal that gave the Lady Tamaraws a 2-6 record, ending a four-game losing skid.

I’m not surprised na ganito ang nilaro namin. I’ve seen them play every day, six times a week, and naniniwala ako na kaya nila. Like I’ve mentioned in the first round, kailangan lang namin mag sabay sabay na merong magandang nilalaro,” said FEU's first-year head coach Raiza Palmera-Dy.

Yvette Villanueva also shone brightly for the Lady Tamaraws with 13 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks, while Salvani, MJ Manguiat, and Rea Ong all chipped in eight points apiece.

Adamson dropped to 5-3, still at third but just half a game above fourth-running Ateneo de Manila University at 4-3.

Elaine Etang paced the Lady Falcons with 16 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Cheska Apag added 14 points, seven rebounds, and four steals.

Nigerian center Adeshina was held to seven points and eight rebounds against the all-Filipino crew of Lady Tamaraws, who lost Congolese big Josee Kaputu early in the season due to a torn ACL.

Both teams will be back next weekend at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.

Adamson will play on Oct. 19, 6 p.m.,  against De La Salle University while FEU will be back on Oct. 20, 10 a.m., against University of the East.

ZANE Kallos once again showed the way, powering Ateneo de Manila University to a commanding 78-60 victory over neighbor University of the Philippines Integrated School as the second round of the UAAP Season 87 Junior High School Basketball Tournament got underway on Saturday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Kallos, the frontrunner for this year’s Most Valuable Player award in the Junior High School division, delivered an all-around performance, tallying 27 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and one block.

After another impressive showing, the 6-foot guard credited his teammates and coaches for their support, which played a crucial role in him leading the statistical points race.

The game remained tight until Bruce Tubongbanua tied it at 40-all with 4:05 left in the third quarter.

Ateneo then unleashed a 21-9 run, capped by Andre Pineda’s three-pointer, to take a 61-49 lead with 6:22 remaining in the fourth.

Yojan Manguerra later sealed the deal, giving Ateneo its largest lead at 78-60 with just seconds left on the clock.

After ending the first round on a three-game losing streak, the Blue Eagles improved to 4-4 and rose to solo fifth place in the standings.

Ateneo now hold a half-game lead over National University Nazareth School (3-4), who will play Adamson University on Sunday.

For Ateneo head coach Reggie Aromin, snapping the losing streak was a much-needed relief.

Relieved, siyempre,” said Aromin. “Kanina, we were still struggling kasi pag natalo ka ng tatlong beses, parang ang hirap i-shake off eh. It’s obvious kasi the boys, bata pa sila

They’re young so kailangan din namin matutunan yung mga ganung bagay—to bounce back and be ready kaagad after every game,” he added.

The Blue Eagles had previously defeated the Fighting Maroons 76-42 in the first round on September 8.

Ateneo’s defense was a key factor in the victory, forcing 16 steals and scoring 30 points off UPIS' turnovers.

The Blue Eagles also dominated the paint, scoring 44 points compared to UPIS' 14.

Ateneo, currently trailing third-place De La Salle Zobel and fourth-place University of Santo Tomas (both with 4-3 records), will have an extended break before returning to action against Far Eastern University-Diliman on October 23 at 10 a.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

For the Junior Fighting Maroons, Jhustin Hallare led the way with 32 points and 11 rebounds, while John Addatu added 10 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

Tubongbanua was limited to five points but grabbed an impressive 15 rebounds.

UPIS—still winless this season with an 0-8 record—will face UST this Saturday at 8 a.m. at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

The Scores:

Ateneo 78 - Kallos 27, Jazul 17, Lacsamana 10, Ngo 9, Juangco 5, Pineda 3, Fernandez 3, Ramos 2, Bernarte 2, Molina 0, Ylen 0, Meresen 0, Valte 0, Divinagracia 0, Dela Rosa 0, Hwang 0.

Dortmund marks a decade of Asian presence

c/o Borussia Dortmund

Earlier this month, German club Borussia Dortmund marked the tenth anniversary of its first international office in Singapore, an expansion that has yielded growth with regards to global outreach and engagement that fostered a deeper connection with its partners across the region.

The office has been able to execute a number of projects that not only helped raise their profile in the region but also assisted in spreading the club's values outside of Germany. Most of these projects are often in collaboration with local counterparts, as well as with Bundesliga International, a subsidiary of the German top flight tasked with connecting football fans worldwide.

One of the key moves Dortmund made is to hire a local to lead the office. Under Dr Sureshwaran Letchmanan, the Singapore office has been able to organize a variety of successful campaigns and partnerships, youth development programs, and fan engagement activations, not just in the island-state, but in fifteen countries in the region as well, including places like Cambodia, Laos, and Mongolia. These include first team tours, legend matches, fan club gatherings and viewing parties.

An example of such a successful activation from the club is its "Virtual Asia Tour" from 2020, where Dortmund became the first international club to pull off an event that did not have physical activity and yet was able to reach many people.

Having collaborations with Bundesliga International allowed for an amplified impact in the region for both parties with multiple high-profile events. The Bundesliga Dream made it possible for local Asian players to aspire for an opportunity to train at top Bundesliga academies, while the Bundesliga Experience aims to engage football fans across the region through a plethora of activations. Various first team Asia Tours allowed such fans to witness what top-flight football in Germany is all about, highlighting the league's competitive spirit.

With all of these in the past decade, Borussia Dortmund also has an eye to expand its footprint in the continent through future initiatives, including the Philippines. In particular, the team is set to hold a football camp later this month in the country.

Managing Director Carsten Cramer shares, "Celebrating a decade of excellence, teamwork, and remarkable achievements, our Asia office in Singapore stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment and global vision. With a presence now in more than 15 countries across Asia Pacific, we have not only expanded our horizons but also created countless wonderful memories and stories along the way. Here’s to the incredible journey we’ve shared and the limitless possibilities that lie ahead."

Dr. Letchmanan adds, "Over the past 10 years, we've had the privilege of witnessing the tremendous growth of BVB’s presence in Asia. The journey has been filled with memorable experiences, from building strong partnerships to engaging with passionate fans across diverse cultures. Our success in the region is a testament to the dedication of our local teams and the deep connection we share with our supporters. As we look to the future, we are excited to continue pushing boundaries, fostering new relationships, and bringing the spirit of BVB to even more communities throughout Asia."

Philippines bow to hosts in King's Cup opener

The Philippines put in a valiant effort against Thailand in their King’s Cup opener, but were unable to avoid defeat in a rain-soaked evening at the Tinsulanon Stadium. Such was the downpour that the game was postponed for almost an hour due to an unplayable pitch, with the conditions still far from ideal after the restart.

I think we played a good first 20 minutes. The game was very equal, we had our chances, but so did Thailand,” said head coach Albert Capellas. “After the rain it was a completely different game, one that had nothing to do with what we trained and from what we expected from a top game like this.”

In his first outing in two years for the Philippines, Gerrit Holtmann impressed, particularly in the opening half. The Germany-based winger forced two saves from the Thai goalkeeper shortly before the break, and was a constant threat on the flanks. The second half, however, saw the Thais build momentum, paving the way for star man Chanatip Songkrasin to give the hosts the lead.

Bjorn Kristensen opened his Philippines’ goal scoring account with a spectacular strike to level the game, but Thailand restored their lead through Suphanat Mueanta just five minutes later. Things went from bad to worse for the visitors, as a VAR check on a sliding tackle led to Amani Aguinaldo being shown a straight red — forcing the Philippines to finish the match with 10 minute. Muenta then scored a second with just three minutes to go to ensure a 3-1 victory for the hosts.

The red card I need to see it more. I only saw one image, but I don’t know if on a field like this you can show a red card. With an action like this, on a field like this, in my point of view, it’s very strict, but it’s nothing we can ever change. I respect the decision of the referees. But when the field is so wet, and players are sliding, we should take this into consideration,” said Capellas on Aguinaldo’s sending off. “Once it was 10 versus 11, Thailand was the better team and they deserved to score one more for sure. Congratulations to Thailand and I hope in the next game we can play with 11 players and a good field."

The Philippines won’t have to wait long for an opportunity to bounce back, as they return to action on Monday, when they face Tajikistan at 4:30PM, for the third place game — a rematch of the Merdeka Cup, which the Tajiks won on penalties. The match will again be aired on One Sports, One Sports+, Pilipinas Live, and on the Philippine Men’s National Football Team’s Facebook Page.

91 teams see action in Bacolod beach volley tilt

Gen Eslapor and Sophia Pagara

The University of St. La Salle Sandbox in Bacolod is set to host a bumper field of teams for the second edition of the Mayor Albee Benitez Beach Volleyball Tournament.

Organized by the Volleyball Association of Negros Island, over ninety squads are set to participate in the competition, which will feature men's and women's divisions in both the under-17 and the open categories. The U-17 will take place this weekend, with the open category to take place during October 18-24.

PNVF director Carmela Arcolas-Gamboa says about the competition, "It will be nine days of exciting beach volleyball action. And we expect this tournament to further propagate volleyball in line with our program and vision in the PNVF."

The inaugural edition last year featured Ran Abdilla and Alexander Cabatuan of Verayo's Grill as its men's open champions, while Gen Eslapor and Sophia Pagara of the University of Santo Tomas claimed the women's open title.

Aside from UST, fellow collegiate teams Ateneo, Far Eastern University, La Salle, National University, and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta are set to participate, while leading the cast of local sides are Colegio de Santa Ana de Victorias, as well as the hosts, USLS.

Winning this competition this year will net PhP 10,000, while PhP 7,000 awaits for the runner-up. Third place nets PhP 4,000 and PhP 2,000 for the other semifinalist.

AFTER clinching three out of four division titles last season, Far Eastern University enters UAAP Season 87's Chess Tournament with heightened ambitions, aiming for a historic event sweep.

The tournament kicks off Saturday at Adamson Gym.

The Tamaraws are brimming with confidence, especially in the Girls' division, led by last season's MVP, Ruelle Canino.

The 16-year-old Canino is fresh off an impressive performance in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where she helped the national team secure the Philippines' first-ever Group B gold medal.

However, despite their dominant run, FEU’s coaching staff is cautious about setting high expectations for their players, preferring to focus on helping them unlock their full potential throughout the season. The results, they believe, will naturally follow.

"All the players are just excited to be playing once again. The mindset is always to play their best games without too many expectations. Like any other sport, it’s important to enjoy the process and not let pressure cloud their decisions," said FEU assistant coach and women’s grandmaster Janelle Frayna.

Frayna, who competed alongside Canino at the Chess Olympiad, hopes that the strong work ethic that powered FEU to reclaim its championship last season continues to thrive among this year’s Tamaraws.

"We have 60 chess athlete scholars. Not all will be playing in the UAAP, but we're trying to instill the same work ethic in all of them, whether they're part of the playing or non-playing teams. This year’s team dynamics are interesting, especially with many young recruits. Younger players tend to be more ‘addicted’ to chess, which creates a competitive atmosphere within the team. I think this environment is very beneficial for everyone," she added.

Meanwhile, defending men's champion University of Santo Tomas is well aware of the stiff competition, particularly from FEU, as they look to secure a fourth consecutive championship this season.

"As of now, FEU seems to be our main contender. They have Bacojo and a consolidated group of veteran players—all coming together this season," said UST head coach GM-elect Ronald Dableo, sharing his early assessment of the competition.

While acknowledging the pressure that comes with being defending champions, Dableo remains confident in his team’s ability to handle it.

"Pressure is always part of the game, but what matters is how my players manage it," he remarked.

UST’s Male Woodpushers will begin their title defense against Season 86 runner-up Ateneo de Manila University, while FEU’s Lady Tamaraws will take a bye on opening day.

In the boys' division, FEU-Diliman will face De La Salle-Zobel, while the school’s girls' team will square off against UST.

All matches are set to start simultaneously at 1:00 p.m.

Also scheduled for the second semester is the first-ever UAAP Rapid Chess Tournament, giving more exposure to the country's top young chessers.

Philippines set to test Thai challenge in King's Cup

Pre-match Press Conference photo

The Philippines kicks off their King's Cup campaign on Friday night at 9:00PM, when they take on the hosts Thailand at the Tinsulanon Stadium. A lively atmosphere is expected, with a capacity crowd of 24,000 ready to welcome the traveling Filipinos. The match will be aired live on One Sports, Pilipinas Live, and the Philippine Men's National Football Team's Facebook page.

"From what I've scouted, they (Thailand) are a very good team with good players – dangerous players in front, and good organization in defense and in attack. I'm sure it'll be a tough game for us. We'll have to play a very good game to get a result," said Philippine Head Coach Albert Capellas, who is set for his first official match in charge. "But I think we are coming with a very good squad. And we will do our best to make it as difficult as possible for them. I'm really looking forward to playing Thailand.”

The Philippines welcomes back several players who have been away from the team in recent international windows: the highly touted Gerrit Holtmann, long-time standout Manny Ott, Swiss Premier League player Michael Kempter, promising forward Sebastian Rasmussen, Thailand-based defender Joshua Grommen, and dynamic midfielder Patrick Strauß.

"We haven't had much time together, but I think we are well prepared for the game," said Patrick Strauß, who plays his club football for Thai club Muangthong United. "We want to achieve something - we want to win. It will be a hard and tough game versus Thailand, but if we are able to do our best, we can win this game."

The hosts sit 48 places higher in the FIFA rankings than the Philippines, and haven't lost to the visitors since the 1970's. With seven ASEAN Championships under their belt, the War Elephants are the team to beat in Southeast Asia. The winner of Friday's match will go on to face the victor between Syria and Tajikistan on October 14.
