Women's Football Matches on Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium

2 p.m. — DLSU vs UST

4:30 p.m. — UP vs Ateneo

A Gabe Suarez equalizer denies the University of the East a chance to secure back-to-back victories in the UAAP Season 87 men's football tournament on Thursday afternoon at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

The 80th minute screamer of a direct free kick actually hit the crossbar first, before it went in to the benefit of La Salle.

UE had gone ahead in first half stoppage time as Nicho Sumanoy's cross found Mark Maghinay to score what turned out to be their only goal of the match.

Both teams had chances to steal the victory and three points in the final few minutes, but they eventually will have to do with sharing the spoils in this one.

The result, coupled with their victory over the University of Santo Tomas on Sunday, allowed them to secure the early lead in the double-round robin competition with four points.

Coach Frank Muescan noted that while the first half of the game was executed according to plan, fatigue in the second half affected the Red Warriors' performance.

"Well yung first half namin according to the plan na execute very well," Muescan said. "Malayo pa naman yung season we need to go back to the drawing board and discuss with my staff and my players para ma-regroup," he added.

His DLSU counterpart Alvin Ocampo praised his opposition. He says, "We had a slow start and yung confidence ng UE is high, because they are coming off a win against UST. Good thing we were able to score one sa set piece pa rin. At least it's a point given."

Ocampo adds, "We have still time to recover on our rescheduled match against Ateneo on Oct. 3."

UE will seek to solidify their positioning atop the league when they face off against last season's losing finalists Far Eastern University, also on October 3.

The league is set to take a break after today's matches with the Philippines' participating in the AFC U20 Qualifying in Thailand starting September 25.
