LALIGA has remained committed in its fight against piracy, and released a statement highlighting a recent development in Latin America.
In Argentina, its judiciary ruled on blocking all domains related to Magis TV, while also ordering Google to disable it within its Android operating system.
This was in connection with a case wherein TV Boxes commercialization networks were investigated in Buenos Aires and Misiones. These devices were illegally used to transmit cable TV operators' channels, which in these cases already had the Magis TV application already installed.
The result of the investigation conducted by Argentina's Cybercrime Unit (UFEIC) resulted in the termination of the largest unified network of audiovisual piracy in the region, while also confiscating TV Boxes with said applications that are being sold online. The group says about their recent actions, "Magis TV is one of the largest audiovisual piracy networks in the world. Its fall in Argentina shows that the country's Justice is acting to protect intellectual property rights against this type of organized crime that rakes in hundreds of millions and exposes people to scams."
Considered as the largest Internet Protocol Television service in the region, Magis TV has 55 million visitors in the last six months in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. It retransmits live television illegally as it does not have retransmission rights, thus stealing audiovisual content from various programmers and distributors and then offer it directly to users.
In addition, having said application on devices like mobile phones, computers, tablets, and SMART TVs could potentially make them susceptible to viruses and malware.
The actions by the Argentine government work within the framework as set up by Operation 404 against piracy of content protected by intellectual property rights, which is led globally by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice.
While in Brazil judicial and police actions were carried out against other piracy networks, their Argentine counterparts conducted raids at homes linked to the stores “TodoTech” in Misiones and “Kive”, in Buenos Aires, for the sale of TV Boxes, as well as premises linked to the illegal IPTV services “Mospy TV” and “Federico TV”, which offer content from different platforms.
The blocking of all the domains related to the illegal services and the disabling of their applications in Google's Android operating system were ordered.
According to Alianza contra la Piratería Audiovisual (Alianza) president Jorge Bacaloni, it took them months to build evidence proving that Magis TV, Mospy TV and Federico TV are pirate platforms. He says, "The Public Prosecutor's Office completed the investigation and moved forward proactively to protect users."
Between the activities conducted in Argentina and Brazil, five individuals have been arrested and charged, with 675 websites and fourteen illegal streaming and music applications dismantled, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
In a statement, LALIGA president Javier Tebas says, "The resolution of the Argentinean justice following the investigation by Prosecutor, based on the evidence presented by Alianza, represents a worldwide example in the fight against piracy and fraud of audiovisual content. Not only was the blocking of all domains associated with the illegal service and its technological infrastructure achieved, but it was also ruled that Google must prevent the use of illegal applications already installed on Android devices through the security mechanisms it has, something we have requested on numerous occasions."
The league remains committed in supporting moves to address piracy, providing technical reports as evidence for both UFEIC and Alianza in their respective cases.
