Host institution the University of the Philippines provided an update on what fans can expect with the Opening Ceremonies, slated to take place on September 7 at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
With the Eraserheads serving as the musical headliner for the event, which will kick off the 87th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, UP has put together what it calls "a kaleidoscopic package of musical artists, groups, and ensembles together with kinetic dance acts," in a bid to make the season opener one of the most memorable in recent history, one that can be live up to its current theme: "Stronger. Better. Together."
Setting the stage for the event, which starts at 11am, is a collaboration between Johnoy Danao and musical soloists in cello, guitar, and percussion.
Set to follow in a richly textured contrapuntal number amid a stunning and immersive light experience is the UP Symphony Orchestra alongside Kontra Gapi, the resident Ethnic Music and Dance Ensemble of the UP College of Arts and Letters.
Providing a rock feel to the ceremonies is a mash-up of UP alumni currently in said scene: Slapshock's Lean Ansing, Franco's Dave Delfin, and Moonstar88's Bon Sundiang and Maysh Baay.
Not to be outdone, the league will have a P-Pop presence as well with KAIA set to take the stage, while also making an appearance is the world-renowned hip-hop dance crew UPeepz.
The UAAP Hymn then will be sung by the UP Concert Chorus and representatives from all eight member-schools.
Normal league proceedings would then take place, including team introductions and the Oath of Sportsmanship, before the Eraserheads take the stage.
As for the lone game scheduled, the matchup between Ateneo and UP is slated for a 630pm tip.
