A couple of Ang Liga matches were held earlier this week at the Moro Lorenzo Field inside the Ateneo de Manila campus, with contrasting results for the Blue Booters.
This past Monday, the lone Div I matchup saw the defending UAAP champions take a 3-1 victory over the University of the East, anchored by a brace from Jarvey Gayoso.
The reigning UAAP MVP scored the opening goal of the match in the seventeenth minute, but Hans Arboleda equalized for the Red Warriors at the half-hour mark. Ateneo would then retake the lead with Jarvey's second goal just eight minutes later. Mark Nacional would then cap off the scoring in the 42nd minute.
The win allows Ateneo to move into the top four with fifteen points in eight matches, leapfrogging idle San Beda and College of Saint Benilde, which each have thirteen points. The loss officially snuffs out UE's slim hopes of progressing into the postseason, as well as that of UST's, as the reigning Ang Liga champions only have one more match remaining on their schedule and are five points adrift.
The next day, the lone Div II matchup scheduled saw Nazareth-National University defeat the Blue Eaglets, 2-0, to end their eliminations campaign unscathed.
The Bullpups had difficulty trying to penetrate Ateneo's defensive set-up, but eventually managed to break through late in each half to secure all three points.
Karim Taala put Nazareth-NU ahead in the 44th minute, while Lemark Unabia completed the scoring with a rebound into second half stoppage time.
Even with the defeat, Ateneo still has a chance to enter the postseason in Div II with three points in four matches, as they are currently level on points with Malayan Colleges-Laguna for the fourth and final postseason slot.
