Around 1,500 coaches from all across the Philippines are congregated starting today at the Ynares Center in Pasig City for the 6th MVP Sports Foundation Coaches Convention.
The Coaches Convention is a three-day seminar and workshop, where these coaches are taught the latest techniques and developments by some of the brightest minds in the sport today.
Some of the speakers and teachers involved in this convention include Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Sonny Barrios, Ateneo de Manila University head coach Tab Baldwin, Alab Pilipinas head coach Jimmy Alapag, and National University assistant coach / Alaska Aces analytics expert Paolo Layug.
The convention will also have veteran Australian coach Brett Coxsedge, who has over two decades of professional experience, as he would be talking and teaching about coaching multi-skilled players, creating a competitive training environment, and developing a defensive style of play.
SM NBTC Director Eric Altamirano says of Coxsedge, “We are excited to have someone of the caliber of Coach Brett teaching in the SM-NBTC. The outside perspective is crucial also to the development of the game.”
Altamirano adds, “For SM-NBTC, our main thrust is to develop skills, build characters, and raise leaders not only among the players, but also the coaches. The coaches play a vital role in the development of the young players, especially in the grassroots level. So it is important that we also equip them with the tools, mindset, and learnings on how to be a more well-rounded coach.”
Coach E shares the expanse of the growth of the MVPSF Coaches Convention has covered 80 cities across the country, and corresponding to that growth is their increased wisdom with their approach to the game. He says that from their “bara-bara” style of instruction, they have evolved not only with regards to their Xs & Os but also with their mentorship of the players. Said growth is noticeable not just in the big cities like Manila, Cebu, and Davao, but also at the likes of Olongapo and Cagayan de Oro, which bodes well for the growth of the game nationwide.
The growth has been assisted by the prevalence of instructional videos posted online by coaches, especially since not all coaches are able to fly abroad and learn first-hand. Coach E believes that the first-hand direct learning experience provides invaluable input.
The MVPSF Coaches Convention also serves as the kickoff event for the premier grassroots tournament in the country, the SM-NBTC League, which will have its first qualifers in early December.
The event is sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation and is part of the SM-National Basketball Training Center umbrella, which is the official grassroots program of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
