San Beda kicked off its title defense as they were successful in fending off an upset-conscious Perpetual Help System Dalta, 67-65, to open the collegiate basketball portion of the 94th season of the NCAA this past Saturday.
Struggling all game long on the offensive end, Robert Bolick stepped up on the other end to preserve the win for the Red Lions. Last season's Player of the Year by the Collegiate Press Corps intercepted a pass from Edgar Charcos to Prince Eze on the final offensive play, as the Altas were looking to set up for either a game-tying or game-winning basket.
Bolick would finish with a team-high fifteen points, anchored on his perfect 8/8 free throws. He shot 3/14 from the field and contributed three of the five total assists of the Red Lions. Robert would share to the media afterwards, "I need more practice."
Javee Mocon and Donald Tankoua contributed fourteen and twelve points, respectively, in helping preserve the win for San Beda.
University of the East transfer Edgar Charcos led the Altas with fourteen points, highlighted by a couple of triples in the final period that helped them take the lead in the fourth quarter. He is one of the numerous newcomers new head coach Frankie Lim integrated onto the squad with just four holdovers from last season.
The second game of the doubleheader saw Lyceum beat San Sebastian, 85-80. The Pirates rode on Mike Harry Nzeusseu's 23 points and 20 rebounds to overcome their 29 turnovers in defeating the Golden Stags.
RK Ilagan led San Sebastian with eighteen markers, but had to sit most of the final quarter after fouling out early in the period.
Preceding the basketball action was the NCAA conducting their Opening Ceremonies. This season's president Anthony Jose Tamayo ushered in the proceedings, which came with a colorful production number, as well as a parade of all ten schools with their basketball student-athletes for both in the high school and collegiate levels.
