Hosts Arellano made sure their long-delayed season debut for NCAA Season 94 will not be a disappointing one, as they rode on the duo of Levi dela Cruz and Ian Alban to tow the Chiefs to a 75-69 OT victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Playing in front of their home crowd as part of the NCAA on Tour series, Lyceum transfer Alban scored eight of his thirteen points in the fourth quarter, including the game-tying basket with 39 seconds left to knot things up at 63 to force overtime.
Dela Cruz then took over in the five-minute extension, scoring the last seven points of Arellano in the game. His steal and fastbreak layup gave the Chiefs the lead for good with 2:20 remaining in overtime, then followed that with a triple with 106 seconds left. He would then score an insurance basket with 21 seconds left for the final score.
According to head coach Jerry Codinera, "When we had a big problem when we lost (Kent) Salado. We’re just thankful we have these guards to help fill the void."
The Generals were hampered with missed free throws all game long, muffing 29 out of 46 foul shots, including the last five attempts that could have stemmed their scoring drought in the final three minutes of the game.
Archie Concepcion led the Chiefs with fifteen points and ten rebounds. Rence Alcoriza also added twelve points, five rebounds, a couple of steals, and a block.
The trio of Hamadou Laminou, Juju Bautista, and Maui Cruz each contributed fourteen markers for EAC, which fell to 0-2.
Earlier that afternoon, the Braves rode on Rom Junsay's shoulders to extract themselves out of a 21-point deficit to beat EAC-ICA, 79-77.
The Mapua/Malayan transfer scored 24 of his 34 points in the second half to ensure Arellano will have a winning afternoon.
Cjay Boado led the Brigadiers with 23 points, with Adrian Balowa adding 19 markers.
