Saturday action at the Ang Liga tournament ended with contrasting victories from National University and the University of the Philippines at the Gatorade-Chelsea Blue Pitch in Makati.
The Bulldogs overcame an early personnel disadvantage by defeating Ateneo de Manila, 3-0. NU overcame Marvin Viray being sent off ten minutes in due to a foul by scoring twice late in the first half, as Sean Julius Epili and Owen Padernal both scored from close range in the 40th and 43rd minute, respectively.
Although the Blue Eagles had their chances to use their on-field personnel advantage during the second half, they were unable to enter the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Ross Lee Lawagan would cap off the scoring in the match for NU in the 84th minute, also from close range after tapping one in off a set piece situation.
As for the latter part of the doubleheader, the Maroons manhandled Emilio Aguinaldo College, 12-0. Rvin Resuma scored all four of his goals in the first half to essay this dominating performance, while Kintaro Miyagi and Fidel Tacardon also netting their respective braces during the same period, as UP would erect a 10-0 lead heading into the break.
Completing the scoring for the Anto Gonzales-coached side are Daniel Saavedra, Miggy Clariño, Joaquin Mathay, and Anton Guariña.
The wins allow both sides to zoom up the standings as the top two teams of Div I.
