Defending champions Red Lions finalize roster

With the spectre of the foreign student-athlete ban looming in two years, Defending champions San Beda selected a couple of big men to hold down the fort in their title defense.

It was no surprise that team management made the decision to retain Donald Tankoua after his impressive season en route to being named as the Finals MVP, and subsequently being honored by the collegiate scribes with the Pivotal Player nod.

Joining the 6'6" Cameroon native as the two foreign student-athletes the Red Lions will be utilizing for the 94th season of the NCAA is the 22-year old Toba Eugene.

The 6'9" Toba impressed head coach Boyet Fernandez with his height and athleticism during the preseason, allowing him to finally displace Arnaud Noah from the Red Lions roster. The former Finals MVP had managed to fend off Toba the past couple of seasons for that slot.

Donald and Toba complete the solid Red Lion core of Robert Bolick, Javee Mocon, AC Soberano, Jomari Presbitero, Clint Doliguez, Franz Abuda. The group is supplemented by the addition of true freshman Evan Nelle, who came up from the Red Cubs.

San Beda kicks off its basketball season this Saturday in the NCAA Tip-off against hosts University of Perpetual Help System Dalta at 2pm. The Altas are now coached by Frankie Lim, who once helmed the Red Lions a decade earlier.

In the other matchup, last season's losing finalist Lyceum faces off against San Sebastian at 4pm.
