UAAP Season 78 women's basketball tourney underway

Women's basketball commenced last Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym, with Adamson, UE, and UST coming out winners in the scheduled triple-header.

The Lady Falcons survived a second half burst in scoring from Bea Daez to hold on to a 62-53 win over UP in the opener, relying on Myra Osano's 7 points in the final period. Princess Cochico led Adamson with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

Daez ended up with 18 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the Lady Maroons.

UE provided the biggest shock of the day, stunning Ateneo, 43-29 in the second game. The Lady Warriors used a zone defense to counter the Lady Eagles' height advantage, stifling their offensive groove in the process.

Ateneo managed to get themselves going in the third quarter after just scoring 7 points in the first half. Behind the heroics of Janina Go, they managed to cut the deficit down to 30-19, but the Lady Warriors responded with 9 points to give themselves the necessary cushion to pull off the upset.

Ruthlaine Tacula and Eunique Chan each had 11 for UE, while Go finished up with 14 points for Ateneo. Recent national team call-up Danica Jose was limited to just 3 points in the defeat.

The final game of the afternoon saw the Growling Tigresses rely on a team effort to ruin the debut of Bert Flores as the new head coach of the Lady Tamaraws.

Overcoming the departure of Lore Rivera, the trio of Candice Magdaluyo, Jhenn Angeles, and Shanda Anies stepped up to fill the shoes of last year's leading scorer, combining to score 49 points.

The perennial title contenders did manage to keep themselves close against the Espana-based dribbles, managing to be down just 4, 57-53, before an Angeles jumper provided the necessary space to seal the win.

Angel Arellado led FEU with 16 points, while Loraine Venutra finished with a near double-double of 9 points and 10 rebounds.

La Salle and NU, both of whom have yet to play their opening matches, will do so on Tuesday morning, 8am, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
