National University thrashes La Salle to kick off its UAAP women's basketball title defense

Defending champions National University opened its title retention campaign in impressive fashion on Tuesday morning, defeating La Salle, 90-78 at the lone UAAP game scheduled that day at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Lady Archers managed to keep themselves within striking distance of the Lady Bulldogs, using their full court press to prevent themselves from being blown out.

However, the ladies of head coach Patrick Aquino uncorked a 17-4 run in the second period to erect an 41-25 lead, with reigning MVP Afril Bernardino scoring almost half of those points. Although La Salle whittled the lead down to single digits heading into the halftime break, Shelly Gupilan caught fire in the third period. The national team stalwart converted three triples to push the lead to twenty, 56-36.

Aquino's shock troopers would then pad the lead to 72-46 after three quarters, before letting off the gas in the final period for the winning margin.

Bernardino finished with fifteen points to lead the Lady Bulldogs in scoring. Gupilan ended up with 11 markers, while contributing four rebounds and six assists.

Khaye Castillo led the Lady Archers with fifteen points, six rebounds, and five assists. Alyanna Vergara contributed 14 markers, with Camille Claro and Snow PeƱaranda each netting 13.

Although Aquino wasn't with the team due to his commitments with the national team, he acknowledged that he was keeping tabs on them even if he was preparing for Perlas' eventual promotion to Level I in FIBA-Asia.

The next set of women's basketball games will take place on Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym, with a quadruple-header spanning the entire day.
