Playing in their home gym, Colegio de San Juan de Letran made sure that things are better the second time around, as they stymied College of Saint Benilde, 64-60, in the fourth stop of the NCAA on Tour this season yesterday afternoon.
The Knights rode on their defense late in the fourth quarter, as they held the Blazers scoreless in the final 3:27 of the game, completing the comeback from a three-point deficit to snatch a four-point victory by scoring the final seven points.
Bonbon Batiller tied things up at 60-all after converting what turned out to be Letran's only successful three-pointer with 2:57 remaining. Bong Quinto, who along with Larry Muyang carried the Knights in the first half, would score his only points in the final period off a fadeaway jumper with 82 seconds left on the clock, giving Letran the lead for good.
The Blazers had their chances to even things up or go ahead, but they botched an attempted fastbreak immediately after the Quinto basket three seconds later. After a Quinto miss, Unique Naboa misses a three-pointer with 47 seconds remaining. They also were unable to secure the rebound after two JP Calvo misses from the free throws line with 32 seconds left, as Calvo himself would be able to secure the offensive rebound and pass it to Jerrick Balanza with 27 seconds left.
Balanza would make the foul shots to make it a two-possession game.
After a timeout, Letran's defense forces CSB to take too much time off the clock, as the Blazers muffed three-point attempts from Edward Dixon and Carlo Young before time expired.
Quinto finished with a game-high seventeen points, while adding six rebounds and an assist. Larry Muyang added ten points, four rebounds, a steal, and a couple of assists, while CSB transfer Christian Fajarito overcame first half foul trouble to contribute a double-double with ten points and eleven rebounds.
Yankie Haruna came off the bench to lead CSB in scoring with thirteen points, five rebounds, and an assist. Clement Leutcheu added ten points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a steal for the Blazers.
Letran now totes a 3-1 record, good for solo third place. CSB drops into a tie with San Sebastian at 2-3.
In the first part of the doubleheader, defending champions La Salle-Greenhills spoiled Letran's homecoming, 82-66.
Sydney Mosqueda led the Greenies with a game-high nineteen points, five rebounds and three assists, while Joshua David and Joel Cagulangan combined for 25 points as LSGH takes the roost atop the High School division with their fourth win in five games.
Shawn Umali was the only Squire to score in double figures with eleven points, seven rebounds, and a couple of assists. Letran drops to the cellar alongside EAC-ICA at 1-3.
