The National Chess Federation of the Philippines earlier this month revealed that the city of Mati in Davao Oriental will host the Mindanao leg of the 2018 National Age Group Chess Championships later this month.
Set to take place at the Baywalk Hotel on March 23-25, it will serve as a qualifying tournament for the ASEAN Chess Championship, which is scheduled this June at Davao City.
Organized by Chess Events Internationale, the event is subdivided into the following age groups for both boys and girls: Under-20, Under-18, Under-16, Under-14, Under-12, Under-10, and Under-8. Champions in each division will be securing an automatic bid to the ASEAN Chess Championship, with FIDE Master titles and International Master norms are at stake.
In addition, cash prizes and medals will be up for grabs for top ten finishers in each category.
Mati City Mayor Carlo Rabat says of the hosting opportunity, "We are honored to have been given the chance to host this event, which is the very first of its kind to be held here in our city."
