Arellano's quest to become a three-time champion in track and field started off strong after Day 1 of NCAA Season 93 activities at the PhilSports oval in Pasig earlier today.
The Chiefs secured the gold medal in the long jump, as Aristeo dela Pena recorded a leap of 7.00 meters, beating out Ronald Canaria of San Sebastian and Angelo Esguerra of Mapua with their respective 6.90m and 6.80m attempts.
Arellano also secured a silver in pole vault, as Jessie Boy Bayan's 3.80m mark was only second to Harvey Unico of Letran with his 4.00m attempt. Dave Geraldino of Mapua secured the bronze with his 3.40m mark.
In the HS division, San Beda and Perpetual are proving to be the biggest stumbling blocks to EAC-ICA's quest to defend their title.
The Red Cubs and Altalettes both secured 1-2 finishes in discus throw and long jump to get their campaigns off and running.
San Beda's John Rafael Lamatan and Gideon Arellano U topped the discus throw, while Perpetual's Warren Villaroso and Janseengin Mantecina topped the long jump.
Before the competition proper, the NCAA held simple opening ceremonies to kick off the festivities, with PATAFA chief Philip Ella Juico gracing the meet. Also present were members of the NCAA Management Committee (ManCom), led by track and field organizing head Frank Gusi of Perpetual Help.
