National University sweep UAAP tennis

National University completed the double in lawn tennis for the third straight season, as they annexed the Season 78 titles in sweeping fashion at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts last Saturday.

The Bulldogs continued their dominance in the men's division, claiming a 3-0 thumping of the University of the Philippines.

Leander Lazaro easily defeated Gelo Esguerra in straight sets, 6-1 6-3 to win the first singles matchup, while Jigo Pena and Al Madrio beat Joshua Miranda and Kyle Joseph in what would turn out to be the lone doubles match, 7-5 6-1.

Reigning two-time MVP Fritz Verdad clinched the sweep for NU with a 6-2 6-3 win over Joshua Cano.

In claiming their fourth straight title, NU's male lawn tennis team has the longest ongoing winning streak in the UAAP with 44 straight victories.

Lazaro was named as the Season 78 Most Valuable Player, his second after being honored in 2013. UST Golden Netter Mark Clarence Cabahug was named as the Rookie of the Year.

On the distaff side, the Lady Bulldogs secured their third straight title with their own 3-0 sweep of UST to claim the undefeated season.

Reigning MVP Clarice Patrimonio opened things with a 6-1 6-3 win over Precian Rivera. while Goldie Nagret and Zaza Paulino defeated Lenelyn Milo and Shymae Gitalan, 6-2 6-2 in the first doubles match.

Tin Patrimonio claimed the championship for NU by winning her singles matchup against Macy Gonzales, 6-2 6-3. She would then be bestown the MVP honor for the second time in her UAAP career.

Ateneo's Jana Pages was named as the Rookie of Year.
