Katipunan remains blue in women's volleyball.
Ateneo de Manila University bested their neighbors the University of the Philippines, 25-14 25-20 25-15 to bolster their hopes of a strong stretch run in the UAAP Season 86 Women's Volleyball Tournament on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
Lasting just 84 minutes, it was a stark contrast to their first round meeting, where the Blue Eagles came back from losing the opening two sets to emerge as 22-25 20-25 25-22 25-17 15-9 winners.
Head coach Sergio Veloso shared to the media afterwards, "I'm so happy! These past two weeks were so challenging; we played four times, but most importantly, our performance remained at the same level. In all these matches, the players played very well."
Team skipper Roma Mae Doromal adds, "I’m very happy sa performance ng team and hopefully sa susunod na games namin mas maging aggressive pa kami and i-embrace pa namin yung system ni Coach Sergio, and hopefully makuha talaga namin yung Final Four."
After falling short against the University of Santo Tomas, where they managed to take the Tigresses to the limit, Ateneo was able to sustain their high level of play against the Maroons, managing to start the third set with a 14-6 lead after taking the first couple of sets.
Geezel Tsunashima led the way with sixteen points off 13/27 attacks and three blocks. She also added six digs.
Providing additional offense is Sobe Buena with ten points, while AC Miner and Lyann de Guzman each contributed eight markers.
Doromal chipped in with thirteen receptions and eight digs for the Blue Eagles, who move up to solo fifth place at 3-6, a game and a half behind 4-4 Far Eastern University, who happens to be their next opponent on April 4.
Steph Bustrillo led UP with eight points as they drop to 1-8. The Maroons will try to bounce back as they face La Salle also on that same date.
