National University claimed their fourth win of the season on Sunday, stopping La Salle, 5-2 in the ongoing UAAP Season 86 Baseball Tournament at the UP Baseball Field inside the Diliman campus.
The Bulldogs relied on the strength of Amiel de Guzman's pitching, with the Calaca native allowing just two runs off four hits in a complete game performance.
De Guzman got the insurance runs he needed in the ninth inning. Kevin Maulit kickstarted things with a leadoff hit to right. An error and two passed balls from last season's Finals MVP Joshua Pineda allowed Maulit to score, while pinch hitter Julius Cesar Soriano tacked on a two-RBI single that sent Cyril Antipolo and Jherick Timban home for the eventual final score.
NU head coach Romar Landicho shared post-match, "Proud ako dun sa mga bata, especially dun sa mga nag-perform katulad nila Amiel De Guzman na talagang hindi bumigay hanggang sa huli. So 'yun lang naman ang kailangan ng team, 'yung lumaban ng lumaban sa La Salle."
Up next for the Bulldogs is the University of the Philippines on Thursday at 3pm.
The defeat drops the Green Batters to 4-3 heading into their matchup against Adamson at 6pm that same day.
