La Salle pipped archrivals Ateneo on Sunday morning, 6-5, to kick off the tripleheader scheduled at the UP Baseball Field for the UAAP Season 86 Baseball tournament inside the Diliman campus.
JR Samuel netted a two-RBI single at the top of the eighth inning to overcome a 4-5 deficit.
Ateneo relief pitcher Gab Francisco hit a couple of La Salle players, forcing the coaches to yank him to Joshua de Juras, who then intentionally walked Lord Aragorn de Vera to load the bases.
De Juras would force an out from Shinji Kajihara, but Samuel's heroics reflect the final tally.
The defending champions got off to a strong start, taking advantage of Manuel Senador's struggles with the strike zone to score four runs.
But the Blue Eagles would find their footing by scoring five runs in the next couple of innings to move ahead, 5-4 after three innings, thanks to Joaquin Mendoza and Ethan Mitschiener.
Both teams then shut down each other until the eighth inning.
La Salle's win moves them up to 6-3, becoming the first team this season to book a spot in the postseason.
Ateneo drops down to 5-4, with their three-game winning streak snapped.
The Lines:
La Salle 4 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 - 6 4 3
Ateneo 0 3 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 5 11 3
