National University gave its new head coach Romar Landicho a winning debut on Sunday, as the Bulldogs blew out Adamson in its season opener, 16-3, at the UAAP Season 86 Baseball tournament at the UP Baseball Field inside the Diliman campus.
Landicho, who replaced long-time mentor Egay delos Reyes, shares about the changes he made with his wards, "Isa siguro sa change is yung mindset lang, kasi last year 'pag dumarating kami sa late innings parang bumibigay. So, 'yun talaga 'yung in-address namin, 'yung mental toughness."
He adds, "Siguro maganda na na-establish namin sa first game para ma-experience nga mga bata. Hopefully, matuloy-tuloy lang namin 'yung momentum."
MJ Carolino allowed just three runs in over five innings of work, including three strikeouts. He had plenty of run support, especially early on with eight runs coming in the first three innings, which included a leadoff hit from Nigel Paule.
Paule also sparked another scoring binge in the seventh inning with his second hit, helping pave the way to a seven-run burst to break the game open and put it out of reach.
Kevin Maulit also had two hits in the game, tacking on three RBIs and himself scoring a run.
Amiel de Guzman then cleaned things up in relief to invoke the mercy rule afterwards, as the Soaring Falcons were limited to just seven hits.
The Line:
NU 1 4 3 0 1 0 7 x x - 16 12 5
AdU 0 0 1 0 1 1 0 x x - 3 7 7
