The first day of UAAP women's beach volleyball at The Sands at the SM By the Bay saw last season's finalists stumble on their opening matches and Ateneo impress on its debut.
The duo of Alyssa Valdez and Bea Tan beat the UP tandem of Arielle Estranero and Vina Alinas, 21-9 and 21-19 to kick off the Lady Eagles' season.
Both ladies are playing their final season for the Blue and White, focused on getting the championship this year.
Meanwhile, defending champions UST lost its opening assignment, a 21-16 17-21 and 15-13 defeat to Adamson's Mylene Paat and Jessica Galanza. Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera did bounce back for the Tigresses in their second assignment of the day, a 21-14 21-14 win over NU's Roma Doromal and Jasmine Nabor.
The same can be said for La Salle, as they were tripped up by the FEU duo of Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza, 21-15 17-21 and 17-15. Kim Fajardo and Cyd Demecillo did manage to reassert themselves in their 21-14 and 21-15 win over UP.
Completing the list of women's beach volleyball matches is NU's 20-22 21-19 and 15-5 triumph against UE.
In the men's side, Ateneo also making a stand, as the partnership of Marck Espejo and Ysay Marasigan defeated the UP duo of Alfred Valbuena and Evan Raymundo, 21-15 and 21-19, then followed that with a 21-16 21-23 and 15-11 hard-fought win over defending champions NU.
The Bulldog tandem of Bryan Bagunas and Madzlan Gampong did manage to notch a win, a 21-14 19-21 15-10 triumph against the Falcon pair of Rence Melgar and Michael Sudaria.
Joining Ateneo at 2-0 is UST, as the Tiger Spikers managed to secure wins against FEU (21-19 13-21 and 19-17) and UE (21-10 and 21-12).
Completing the men's matches is La Salle's 21-10 19-21 and 15-13 victory against UE.
