Stallion Laguna FC claims PFF Women's Cup title

Stallion Laguna FC

Stallion Laguna FC claimed the 2024 edition of the PFF Women's Cup on Monday night, dispatching Kaya FC-Iloilo, 1-0 in the final that took place at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

The lone goal of the match came early on, as Chandler McDaniel volleyed it past the keeper from way outside the box about 120 seconds into the match.

McDaniel shared afterwards, "We wanted to come in and make a statement we wanted to win of course... Coming from last season, we really wanted to make a statement, come back and that’s exactly what we did and we will keep on moving."

The McDaniel siblings returned to the club after a brief sojourn overseas, highlighting the major buildup the team had in the offseason, which included signings like recent national team callups Jess Miclat, and Bella Pasion, as well as other acquisitions like Jamia Fields, whose stoppage-time winner allowed them to beat Kaya in the preliminaries.

Chandler and Olivia also led the individual awardees that were also handed out that evening, with the former named as the Most Valuable Player and the latter as the Best Goalkeeper.

Other individual awardees include Hali Long as the Best Defender, Katrina Wetherell as the Best Midfielder, and Golden Boot awardee Julissa Cisneros, who scored eleven goals in the competition.

Capping off the awardees are Tuloy FC as Fairplay Award winners.

In a statement, Philippine Football Federation president John Gutierrez shares, "Congratulations to Stallion Laguna FC on their championship victory and to all the award recipients for their outstanding performances.. The PFF Women’s Cup 2024 showcased the incredible talent and dedication of women’s football, and we are excited to continue supporting the growth of the sport in the Philippines."

Supported as well by Coca-Cola, the PFF Women's Cup showcased some of the best of the best in women's football being played in the country, allowed its athletes to have a platform in which to shine. Expect more action down the line with the PFF Women's League slated to take place in 2025.

Stallion Laguna FC statement on the Philippine Premier League

On Friday, Stallion Laguna FC, along with Global Makati, held an emergency press conference on the eve of the opener of the Philippine Premier League.

The team then sent an official statement the next day. The full content of the statement is posted below.
After careful consideration Stallion Laguna FC will not be participating in the 2019 Philippine Premier League.  We held a press conference today where we shared our sentiments and disappointments.

We have been part of the Philippine Football scene since 2010. Regardless of all the challenges and hardships, we are confident that the future of Philippine Football is bright. But for this to happen we will need to partner with a League operator that will not only help develop the clubs but will also add value to the development of professional football in the Philippines.

Stallion Laguna FC will not be joining the PPL 2019 League competitions because of the following promises made by PPL under the Tournament Commissioner and PSG/Triple CH owner Bernard Sumayao:

    1. The PFF awarded Triple CH a license to operate the league.  Bernie told us that he owned the league, and later retracted it and acknowledged that he is the League Operator and not the League Owner.
    2. He stated on his Dec 2018 letter to the clubs that his plan is to collect P500K Participation Fee from each club, to be used to operate the league, and “if there is any shortfall the PPL owners will take responsibility of this and not the PFF”. During our Workshop it was disclosed that each club will be paying the following:
        a. P500K Participation Fee (to be used to operate the PPL)
        b. P100K insurance (the beneficiary being the PPL)
        c. P1.15Million in match day expenses broken down as follows
            i. P619,500.00 (league -double header) 15 matches total expense for each club
ii. P203,250.00 (League-Stand Alone) 3 matches total expense for each club
iii. P123,900.00 (Cup-Double header) 3 matches total expense for each club
iv. P203,250.00 (Cup-Stand alone) 3 matches total expense for each club
        d. Total collection from the 7 clubs will be P12.250Million

If the clubs will be spending P12.250 Million to run and operate the league, what is Bernie’s contribution? Yet in his proposed Participation Agreement Bernie will get 60% of the profit? He promised that the clubs will be spending less to be part of the PPL. In 2018 PFL clubs did not pay for the franchise fee or any type our tournament fee. As per the proposed PPL budget, Stallion Laguna FC will end up spending 200% more on home matches in the PPL compared to the PFL.

    3. All competitions will be Centralized. Meaning on match days there will only be one playing venue. Yet the PPL claims to be compliant with PFF and AFC Rules and Regulations. AFC Rules and Regulations for Professional League competitions allows only for HOME AND AWAY type matches for professional league that will be sending teams for the AFC Cup and AFC Champions League. Why call us Stallion Laguna FC if we will be playing our home games in Batangas? How can we promote SLFC to our local fans in Biñan and Laguna if they cannot watch us play our home matches at our home pitch?
    4. They claim that the Champion of the PPL League will be sent to the AFC Champions League. As per AFC Champions League Rules and Regulations, the PFF is the only authorized body to recommend a professional team to represent the Top Tier Professional League in the Philippines to any AFC Club level competition.
    5. The PPL reduced our economic rights to almost nothing. Our marketing rights in the PPL have been limited only to what you will see on our jerseys. We cannot even promote our sponsors during the matches via A-boards or other collaterals.
    6. The only commitment the PPL made to raise funds for the league is “BEST EFFORTS”. All they are committing to is to TRY to bring in sponsors and funding.
    7. Bernie Sumayao was granted the right to operate the PFLlast July 2018. Since July 2018 to March 14,2019 he was not successful in producing the following deliverables :
        a. Produce a League Sponsor or Title Sponsor
        b. He did not produce the 8-12 Professional Licensed Teams as promised
        c. He did not complete his SEC registration until March 15, 2019.
        d. He was not able to submit the PPL Participation Agreement of PPL Competition Rules and Regulations until after March 15, 2019
    8. During the 2017 and 2018 PFL season the stakeholders (PFL,PFF, and club owners or representatives) met as a group at least once every 2 weeks. The clubs attended numerous workshops and seminars.
During the 9 months of PPL operations they have met with the PPL/PFF/Clubs together as a group ZERO times. We have had 1 workshop, met with Bernie twice, and got 2 responses from 7 emails sent.

    9. Based on these facts, Stallion Laguna FC has 0 confidence in the ability of the Bernie Sumayao to operate a professional league in the Philippines to its completion

It is the right of any participating club to ask questions and request for information regarding the league you will be joining. If a club is unclear as to the financial viability of a league, how money will be spent, and how will the league operate financially from day 1/ Then something must be wrong.

We made a public statement last Monday that we are ready to play our 1st game in the PPL as scheduled. We were informed on Thursday that we were removed from the schedule because we did not sign the PPL Participation Agreement nor pay the Participation Fee. We have been requesting the PPL for the Tripartite Participation Agreement approved by the PFF, but to this day we have not received the approved agreement.

The PPL Tournament Rules and Regulations must be approved by the PFF, since the PPL is purportedly the qualifying tournament for all AFC Professional Club competitions. We have yet to receive the approved Rules and Regulations.

We therefore decide that it will be to the best interest of our fans, sponsors, host city and supporters, that we pull out of the 2019 PPL season.

We’ve sent numerous questions and emails to the PPL from 2018 to 2019. Most of them were never answered. It was only during the last few weeks that Mr. Sumayo responded to my emails. Here is the summary of questions we sent them:

QUESTIONS: Questions in Blue were eventually answered.

    1. Who are the sponsors of the PPL?
    2. What is they peso value of sponsorship? Where is the contract?
    3. Who are the licensed club teams that are joining the PPL? Who are the unlicensed teams?
    4. Who is the PPL’s network partner?
    5. How many games are live and when?
    6. The PPL cannot issue club licenses, nor can they send teams to the AFC. What will happen if only 4 teams have their National Club license?
    7. What will be P500K be used for? Why is there an ACCELERATION CLAUSE?
    8. Where is the approved Participation Agreement, and Tournament Regulations?
    9. When will the PPL present their total proposal?
        a. Projected FS
        b. Breakdown of projected expenses
        c. Plans for the league
    10. What are the financial responsibilities of the PPL? Based on the submitted Participation Agreement, the PPL has no financial responsibilities to the league. The clubs are paying for majority of the expenses. PPL will only do “BEST EFFORTS”?
    11. How come the MOA with the PFF was not even referenced in the Participation Agreement?
    12. What is the Organizational Structure of the PPL?
    13. Is the owner of the PPL registered with the SEC? Where is the GIS if it is registered?>
    14. What qualified Bernie to be the Tournament Chairman?
    15. What is the justification for the profit sharing? Majority of expenses will be paid by the clubs, then why is Bernie getting 60%?
    16. What will happen is the PPL is not sanctioned by the PFF, and the champion of the league cannot represent the league in AFC?
    17. Who will be responsible for the liabilities of the PPL? Where is it stated on the participation agreement?
    18. How come all the communications of the PPL are not official? No email address? No approval from the PFF?
    19. Why is the PPL not transparent with the clubs?
    20. How come the PPL releases statements to the press without talking to the Clubs or the PFF?
    21. Why is the PPL claiming to be the owner of the league when it is only a LEAGUE OPERATOR?
    22. I want to be clear that we are TEAM OWNER’s and not team operators, to be granted rights to operate by the PPL. We own our teams, and our players are contracted to us. We own our marketing rights, as well as images and collaterals of our club.  We own our logo, our club name, and we own the contracts we have with our sponsors. The PPL cannot issue rights to operate our teams, since we are duly registered with the PSE already, licensed by the PFF,  recognized by GAB as a Professional Football Team, and are privately funded.
Global Makati's statement was released through their Facebook page.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Premier League pushed through as schedule with a doubleheader at Rizal Memorial, with matches scheduled to take place at the Aboitiz Field in Lipa.

Field set for opening Philippine Premier League season

The Philippine Premier League. Set to open March 30.

Seven teams made the cut for the launch of the inaugural Philippine Premier League season, the league announced on Friday afternoon.

Four clubs from the Philippines Football League will make the transition to the PPL, led by defending league champions Ceres-Negros FC and inaugural Copa Paulino Alcantara champions Kaya FC-Iloilo. Stallion Laguna FC and United Makati FC will make the move, with the latter rebranding itself from Global Cebu FC.

The other three clubs that will complete the cast are familiar names to many a hardcore Filipino football fan, as they all were part of the United Football League earlier this decade, led by one of its former league champions Philippine Air Force.

The Airmen's representatives were among those present when the launch of the league was conducted earlier this year, led by former Philippine international Ian Araneta, who will take on a coaching role in this go around.

GAU was the most notable club that passed on the opportunity to join the PFL during its existence, spending the time after the UFL instead at the WFL Elite.

The final team that made the cut is Mendiola FC, whose last iteration saw them in UFL's Division II, but has a hallowed tradition based on their bloodline connection with traditional collegiate football powerhouse San Beda.

All seven teams will also take part in the Copa Paulino Alcantara, which the PPL will retain as its cup competition.

The league also revealed today that the schedule for the inaugural season will be released on March 15, kicking off its campaign with a 4pm and 7pm doubleheader on March 30 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

The latter portion of the doubleheader will be shown LIVE on 5Plus and streamed online through the media outfit's social media portals.

The PPL also exhorted its fans to help keep the spirit of football alive in the country by inviting them to come and support the teams.

Adamson would double the lead ten minutes later with Brian Jumo's header, before a 20th minute penalty from Sammy Osman pulled one back for Stallion.

Goalless draw between FC Meralco Manila and Stallion Laguna

FC Meralco Manila was held to a goalless draw against Stallion Laguna FC in the first Philippines Football League fixture since the resumption of club play this past Saturday afternoon.

The visitors tried to take advantage of a makeshift defensive unit by the Sparks, with Joaco Cañas, Alvin Sarmiento, and Neil Dorimon all suspended. Aris Caslib moved Tyler Matas to central defense while inserting Jake Morallo as a wingback on the left side. Unfortunately, attempts from the likes of Gabriele Mascazzini and Nate Alquiros were either off target or easy enough for netminder Jun Badelic to handle.

The second half showed something similar, with the likes of Ko Kyung Joon and Carlo Polli getting off shots for the visitors. Stallion also had a case for a penalty shout as they perceived that a Morallo block inside the area could have been called for a handball, but the referee opted not to call it.

The Sparks had their own scoring opportunity, with a Lee Jeong Min header hitting the crossbar.

Stallion had a final scoring chance in stoppage time, but Alquiros' chance was just high. As for FC Meralco Manila, a chance from Minniecon force a save from Bitoy Rosalia, which Jinggoy Valmayor would bunch in. Unfortunately, the assistant referee deemed the UP alumnus to be offside.

With the point, FC Meralco Manila padded their lead to four points against Kaya FC-Makati, and puts them closer to a berth in the Finals Series. Stallion moves into solo fifth place with 28 points in 23 matches.

Notes: Tahj Minniecon got booked in the match, which means he is suspended for FC Meralco Manila's next match. Recent Philippine international Jhanjhan Melliza suffered a groin injury.

Stallion's Ernie Nierras: It was a well-played game from both sides. We wanted to control the middle of the pitch and we did. We also addressed the long throws of Tyler Matas and their corners.

Polli: For me, we played better. We had so many shots.

Caslib: We wanted three points so this is a setback for us. But everyone in the organization knows where we are so we all really need to step up.

Simon Greatwich on the game: A scrappy game, not much football being played. Lots of 50/50s and poor controls. Both teams had chances to score. We need to be positive. We need to regroup.

PFL resumes with Stallion visiting FC Meralco Manila

Spark Jinggoy Valmayor lets fly against Stallion.
The Philippines Football League returns to action this afternoon with FC Meralco Manila hosting Stallion Laguna FC at 4pm.

The international break provided an opportunity for the Sparks to pause and reflect after their dramatic 2-1 loss to Kaya FC-Makati last September 30. In spite of that setback, however, they still remain ahead in the standings with 44 points in 21 matches.

Stallion bounced back from being housed 4-0 by Kaya with a 2-2 draw against Davao Aguilas FC. The point moved them level with idle JPV Marikina at 27, but their inferior goal difference puts them in sixth overall. Both teams are seven points behind Global Cebu FC in the fourth and final postseason slot.

Depth will pose a slight bit of concern for FC Meralco Manila as Neil Dorimon, Joaco Canas, and Alvin Sarmiento are suspended due to card accumulation, although Milan Nikolic will be returning to action. Also suspended for that instance is Balot Doctora, but Stallion will look at Carlo Polli, Gabriele Mascazzini and Jhanjhan Melliza to take the cudgels in his stead.

The visitors have yet to beat the hosts in the inaugural PFL season, losing both its matches at Binan, 5-1 and 3-2, while managing to secure a 1-1 draw at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Tickets are available at the gate for PhP 20 for bleachers, PhP 50 for grandstand, and PhP 200 for VIP grandstand. In addition, if one can't get to the game, one can also take advantage of the streaming link below.

Notes from the Pre-Match Press Conference yesterday afternoon at Rizal Memorial

The two protagonists for this afternoon's PFL matchup

Melliza is not expected to start for Stallion, per CEO Ernie Nierras, as he has just arrived from national team duties.

Nierras: The players are in high spirits and rested. We have been changing how we play and it's a work in progress. But we have been able to execute new tactics in training.

Nierras: Referee in their 2-2 draw vs Davao made a telling call (penalty secured a draw for the Aguilas in second half injury time). League must look into potential conflict of interest involving officials (Ref worked at The Younghusband Football Academy)

Nierras: In these last six matches, we need to get 18 points. I feeel we are out of the competition if we draw or lose any of our remaining games.

Stallion player Jay Shaun Soberano: We have been doubling our efforts in preparation for this game.

Aris Caslib: We want three points this weekend. We want a good rebound after our last game, a loss to Kaya. We scored early, but we need to manage the end game.

Caslib believes JhanJhan Melliza will play, so they will have to stretch ourselves.

Caslib: Franco de la Torre is coming in so we have flexibility in the middle. Dela Torre is coming over from the Davao Aguilas. He used to play

FC Meralco Manila defender Milan Nikolic: I don't remember the last time we had a full squad. I am not afraid. I'm pretty sure we will get three points.

Stallion, Davao seeking bounce back today

Davao Aguilas FC continue their quest to finally secure their first win in the Philippines Football League this afternoon, as they visit Stallion Laguna FC at the Binan Football Stadium at 4pm.

The Aguilas were denied that winning moment last week, a 2-0 loss to FC Meralco Manila at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium last week. Both goals took place in the second half, as Aris Caslib made some adjustments on their offense, while maintaining their defensive game plan against the Younghusbands in their first match against their old club.

Davao interim head coach Marlon Maro bemoaned the depth situation he has with the squad in that loss. Since then, he has received some good news with Angel Guirado finally now available to play.

As for the hosts, they are looking to pick up the pieces after their four-match winning run was halted in emphatic fashion against Kaya FC last week, losing 4-0 at the University of Makati.

This match will feature some offensive threats, as Jhanjhan Melliza will be up against Harry Sawyer and Dylan De Bruycker.

Streaming link for the match can be viewed below

Notes: Kim Kyung So and Carlo Polli are both suspended for Stallion this matchup.

Kaya FC-Makati puts an emphatic end on Stallion Laguna streak

Enjoying the aftermath of a win inside the University of Makati
The winning streak of Stallion Laguna FC has been silenced in impressive fashion on the road by Kaya FC-Makati, with the home side pulling out a 4-0 victory at the University of Makati this past Saturday afternoon.

All four goals came in the second half, three of them coming in a span of six minutes. At the hour mark, Jordan Mintah received the ball just inside the Stallion half, then releasing to the ball towards Robert Lopez Mendy out on the left flank. He would then sprint towards the box, then received the ball back from Lopez Mendy, beat his defender using one touch, then taking another touch to settle himself down before slotting past the net into the far corner to open the scoring that afternoon.

It didn't take long for a second goal for the hosts. Miguel Tanton just came into the match to replace Woody Ugarte, and when he received the ball just inside the Stallion half a couple of minutes after the first Mintah goal, he fired a lob that dropped perfectly under the crossbar and into the net.

Mintah would get his second goal in the 66th minute, scoring from a header off a Tanton assist.

Capping things off for the victory is Eric Giganto, as he received a pass from Marvin Angeles on the right flank to put it past the line in the 86th minute.

Noel Marcaida and Jordan Mintah addressing the media after the match

Addressing the media post-match, Noel Marcaida was pleased with the result, knowing how much this was needed. He says, "I think coming into this game, everyone was on the same page. As I mentioned before the match, we had plans for Melliza, plans for their midfielders, and I think we were successful. We denied them scoring chances, and I give credit to all our players for playing very well."

Marcaida also praised Tanton's return, noting that it "really made a difference." He added, "We had lots of penetration, we had lots of chances, and we were able to score goals. Noel noted the collective effort of the team as well in the victory.

The four goals Kaya FC-Makati scored that afternoon matched the team's scoring output in the previous four matches, underscoring the team's offensive issues.

With the victory, they solidified their hold on second place with 38 points in 22 matches. The loss keeps Stallion at 26 points in 21 matches.

Kaya hosts FC Meralco Manila in a huge top-of-the-table clash at 4pm on September 30, while Stallion hosts the Davao Aguilas, also at that same time frame.

The other Saturday afternoon PFL matchup saw Ilocos United FC finally break through with their first victory, defeating JPV Marikina FC at the Binan Football Stadium, 2-1. Kennedy Uzoka scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute for the visitors. Allen Angeles broke the ice for the "home" side after ten minutes, but Angelo Marasigan equalized in the 32nd off a free kick.

Kaya FC–Makati Returns to UMak, Looks to Put a Halt to Stallion Laguna’s Winning Run

Kaya might have this guy back later today.
Kaya FC Makati make their return to the University of Makati later this Saturday afternoon, taking on a red hot Stallion Laguna side hunting for their fifth straight victory in the Philippines Football League. Kickoff is scheduled at 4pm, with tickets to Field Side (P20) and Grand Stand (P350) seats available either through SM Tickets or at the venue.

Fresh from snapping a 6-game winless skid in Ilocos, Kaya are eager to get back into the habit of winning, especially with only seven games left for Makati to ensure their presence in the Finals Series. Every outing now bears massive consequences to the club’s hopes of finishing in the top four.

“The only option we really have is to get those three points, so we can get a stranglehold of a top four spot,” said Kaya Makati head coach Noel Marcaida. “Our goal tomorrow is to stop their winning streak, and for us to begin our winning momentum.”

One key hurdle for the home side will be Jesus Melizza. Known as Jhan-Jhan, the former FEU standout is the PFL’s current leading scorer with 14 goals. He’s been on a tear in the last few weeks, with his blinding pace and clinical finishing shooting him into the very top of a prestigious list of the league’s finest finishers. Kaya’s Jordan Mintah and Robert Lopez Mendy are not far behind with 12, and nine, respectively.

“I think Stallion has been working on their fitness, especially Jhan Jhan Melliza. At the start of the league, you can see Melliza was not that fit. Now he’s in good shape, thats why he’s able to get lots of goals for Stallion. I think tomorrow, the main goal is stop the source to Melliza, and we make sure we control him. If we do that all throughout the game, for sure we’ll get a good result,” stated Marcaida.

Laguna head coach Armando Heria isn’t so sure stopping Stallion will be so easy.

“Maybe they can stop Jhan Jhan. But other players can penetrate on the left or right side,” he said. “Kaya FC is one of the very strong teams in the PFL, and we are prepared to face them tomorrow. We are preparing on pressurizing them in the midfield, not to allow them to distribute upfront,” he added.

It’s been more than a month since Kaya last played at the University of Makati. And the club’s return has been buoyed by the return of a key player from injury.

“It’s been a long while since we last played in our home. It’s going to be an interesting and exciting game. Last time we played Stallion at home, we won 1-0, but they also created lots of chances. We just have to make sure that everyone is ready, everyone is sharp, and that everyone is on the same page,” said Marcaida, before revealing, “Everyone is available. We have players who haven’t played for more than a month now. Miguel Tanton’s presence in tomorrow’s game will be a big help for us.”

Jovin Bedic, who was a part of Stallion’s glory years in the United Football League, is eagerly anticipating tomorrow’s showdown against his former club, confident that Kaya have the necessary hunger to send the visitors home empty handed.

“Bukas, very exciting yung game kasi, Stallion kakagaling lang sa four-game winning streak,” he said. “Pero kailangan nating depensahan, nasa home din tayo. Yung supporters, yung Ultras Kaya, nandun. Dapat depensahan yung home mo, so lalaban kami bukas.”

(“Tomorrow is going to be a very exciting game because, Stallion have just come from a four-game winning streak,” he said. “But we need to protect, we are at home afterall. The supporters, the Ultras Kaya, they’re there. Your home needs to be defended, so tomorrow we’re coming out fighting.”)

“We’re hungrier to win in tomorrow’s game. We’ve been working hard after that winless streak. Tomorrow, we’re going to go out there strong, prepared for a physical game against Stallion. That’s it.”

Ceres-Negros prevents Davao breakthrough

Davao hosting Ceres at Tagum earlier this week.
The Davao Aguilas have yet to win a football game as a club in the Philippines Football League, as they were held by Ceres-Negros FC to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex in Tagum City.

With the attention the team got after making the decision to name Marlon Maro as the interim head coach to replace their inaugural gaffer Gary Phillips, the Aguilas were hoping that such a change would lead to an improvement in fortune after losing six of their last eight matches.

Such changes saw immediate dividends, with James Younghusband scoring the opening goal of the match in the 27th minute, as a Phil Younghusband free kick found its way to Harry Sawyer inside the area, with the ball eventually finding James to poke in past the line, after getting a deflection off a Ceres defender.

The Busmen did have their scoring opportunities. Stephan Schroeck's chance in the tenth minute was deflected to the left of the post in the tenth minute, while Manny Ott's opportunity was saved by Marko Trkulja in the 36th minute. Ceres also had a couple of chances just before the first half ended, but the break came with the hosts taking a 1-0 lead.

The visitors continued to put pressure on the Davao defense to find an equalizer to start off the second half, with Schroeck's attempt from the right side being saved by Trkulja in the 48th minute. They eventually would break through in the 73rd minute, as Fernando Rodriguez finally puts Ceres on the board with a header from inside the area.

Each side had their chances to secure the winning goal, but Trkulja challenged Iain Ramsay's scoring opportunity in the 76th minute, while Jeffrey Christiaens and Omid Nazari could not convert on their chances. Meanwhile, Simone Rota's header off a free kick, was ruled offside in the 84th minute, an outcome that Maro was not thrilled with.

Meanwhile, in what was the surprising development of the day for the PFL, the other match scheduled for the day between Global Cebu FC and Stallion Laguna FC at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium was cancelled. Both teams, represented by Josef Malinay for the hosts and Ernie Nierras for the visitors, would then conduct a press conference to address this particular matter, mainly apologizing to the fans for the sudden cancellation.

As of this writing, the league has not yet addressed the statements made by both teams concerned publicly. Aside from its post on Facebook announcing said postponement, the PFL has yet to officially comment on this matter.

NOTES: Attendance at Tagum for this match was just under four thousand. Maro at the post-match press conference: "We indeed won. However, the referee nullified our second goal. It's his opinion. We respect it. To our fans, we are still on the right track for the remaining matches. Ceres has 29 points, but can easily overcome their twelve-point deficit to FC Meralco Manila with their five games in hand. Davao remains mired in seventh place with seven points.

Marlon Maro set to make PFL head coaching debut

With the team's continuing struggles in its inaugural season as a club, the Davao Aguilas have turned to a local face to lead the charge in changing their fortunes in the Philippines Football League.

Tasked to replace Gary Phillips on an interim coaching capacity is Marlon Maro, who was the head coach of the Philippines' Under-22 men's football team at the Southeast Asian Games. When asked about potential adjustments heading into their matchup against the Busmen, Maro noted that "there will be a lot of changes, but there is only one option, which is winning." He added that the team is in "high spirits" and is looking forward to snatching their first win this season.

The lone Mindanao side in the PFL has mustered only six points in fifteen matches, with losses in six of its last eight fixtures. In spite of this, Maro still believes that the team can still make a push for the postseason, highlighting that it still remains mathematically possible to be among the top four teams.

Meanwhile, Ceres-Negros is currently in fourth place with 28 points, but has at least six games in hand compared to the teams above and below it in the race for the postseason.

Meanwhile, the other PFL matchup set to tip off at the same time is Global Cebu FC hosting Stallion Laguna FC at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

Global is currently in third place at 34 points, and with a game in hand against current second placers Kaya FC-Makati, are seeking to retake that plum position with a victory. Stallion is on the outside looking in at sixth place with 26 points, and a win on the road will bunch up the field further in the race for the postseason.

The hosts are seeking to avenge their 2-1 loss to the visitors in their last meeting on August 25, the final PFL match before the FIFA international break. They are also going to attempt to douse fire on Jhanjhan Melliza and his red-hot scoring streak for the Lakeside Squad.

Stallion seeking to extend PFL winning streak

Stallion Laguna FC is looking to continue its winning run in the Philippines Football League, as it hosts JPV Marikina FC this afternoon at the Binan Football Stadium.

The Lakesiders are currently toting a three-match winning streak, including a 5-0 demolition of Ilocos United FC last Sunday. The winning run has put them within striking distance in the race to be part of the top four teams that qualify for the postseason at 23 points.

Head coach Armando Heria says that the team is practicing harder and that they are excited to face JPV. Fitch Arboleda adds that the team added some emphasis on defense during practices in the run up to tomorrow's match, since JPV is a more attacking side heavy on possession.

Fitch also adds that team spirit is high after their last victory, and hopes that this can carry over into this upcoming match.

JPV is also coming off a victory, a 1-0 win over Kaya FC that solidifies its hold on fourth place at 27 points. Voltes has racked up points in its last five matches since that four-match losing streak.

FC Meralco Manila enhances PFL lead

FC Meralco Manila solidified its hold on first place in the Philippines Football League with a 3-2 victory over Stallion Laguna FC at the Biñan Football Stadium last Saturday.

Connor Tacagni finally scored his first goals for the Sparks, while Tyler Matas completed the scoring for the visitors, who took advantage of the hosts being without their key offensive weapons in skipper Balot Doctora and key offensive weapon JhanJhan Melliza due to suspension.

FC Meralco Manila held on for a slim victory over a gutsy Stallion side on Saturday afternoon in the Biñan Football Stadium. Connor Tacagni opened his account for the club with two goals while Tyler Matas added another.

The early part of the match saw FC Meralco Manila take chances, with Jake Morallo forcing a save from Stallion GK Bitoy Rosalia. Morallo also had another shot on goal, but he sent it wide. It took them until the 28th minute to break the ice, as Tacagni received a great cross from Alvin Sarmiento and heads it past Rosalia from the left flank just inside the far post.

Meralco had the chance to double the lead three minutes later, but Rosalia diverted Simon Greatwich's volley onto the post. But it did not take long before the Sparks get their second goal, another Tacagni header off a cross, this time from Tahj Minniecon. Rosalia was unable to stop the former Red Booter's diving header that would give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Stallion had their first good chance not long after that, with Nicolas Ferrer taking a shot just wide fresh from being inserted into the match as a substitute.

The second half was not really that different, with the visitors still getting their chances. Sarmiento was wide in his volley in the 54th minute. But Tyler Matas made it 3-0 Sparks shortly, converting a left-footed shot from fifteen yards out.

The hosts finally managed to break through in the 75th minute. New signing Kyung Joon Ko put the hosts on the board, poking one in after it takes a deflection. Fitch Arboleda would cap off scoring off an assist from Christian Nana in injury time, but time would run out on the comeback attempt, snapping their recent run of matches without a defeat.

Tacagni says, "I'm so happy because we all have been working hard. I've just been trying to work hard and trying to get into good areas."

Sparks head coach Aris Caslib acknowledges that Connor's strength is heading, noting that, "I've told him he could get a lot of chances off diagonal balls and they were delivered perfectly today."

The victory allows FC Meralco Manila to extend their hold on first place with 33 points, five points ahead of Global Cebu FC, which lost to JPV Marikina FC yesterday, 5-2.

Stallion Laguna FC remains in sixth with fourteen points.

FC Meralco Manila and Stallion Laguna tangle

The Sparks face a stiff challenge when they travel south this afternoon for a pivotal clash against Stallion Laguna. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 pm at the Biñan Football Stadium and admission will be free for all spectators.

FC Meralco Manila is currently atop the Philippines Football League table while Laguna sits sixth, a full 16 points adrift. However, Stallion are one of the hottest teams in the league, owners of a five-match undefeated streak that has erased the memory of their slow start to the campaign.

Laguna have been buoyed by the return of Carlo Polli into their lineup while the arrival of another Swiss marksman, Gabriele Mascazzini, has only added sting to the Lagunense attack.

"They are on a roll, but I think we can have a good game with them," says Manila coach Aris Caslib. He adds, "The win (last Saturday), over Kaya has really improved the mindset of the players."

Caslib also notes the scoring prowess of their opponents this Saturday, "Jhan Jhan Melliza and Mascazzini are playing well but we cannot underestimate Polli and Balot Doctora."

This will be the third meeting between the two sides this season. On opening day Manila walloped Laguna in Biñan, 5-1. But in the return fixture in Rizal Memorial the Sparks were held to a 1-1 standoff thanks to a second-half equalizer from Melliza.

Sparks captain Simon Greatwich is also wary of the Stallion threat. The newly-minted skipper says, "Stallion are known for their good work rate, playing very physical, and being good in transition. They always make it difficult for us." He also adds, "But we will match their work rate and physicality."

Greatwich also noted that the side will have a full week to prepare for the game, unlike the two days of rest before their last encounter, a gutsy 2-1 win over Kaya on Saturday. "It's important for us to pick up maximum points while we are fresh," he says, whose squad faces another daunting stretch of matches after playing Stallion.

On August 16, the Sparks travel to Bacolod for a midweek game against Ceres-Negros FC before entertaining Ilocos United on the Sunday after. A weekday game versus JPV Marikina follows after that.

Meralco has no serious injury concerns as centerback Joaco Cañas, who missed the Kaya game, has recovered well from a sore hamstring. However, national team duties will force the team to play without Ace Villanueva and Daniel Gadia. Both players, alongside Ian Clarino, were called up to participate in the upcoming SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Kaya Makati Denied Sixth Straight Victory

Kaya FC against Stallion Laguna FC

Kaya Makati missed out on a record sixth straight victory in the Philippines Football League, after Stallion Laguna held them to 1-1 draw at the Biñan Football Stadium. Jordan Mintah's second half header put the away side ahead, but Dan Villarico's rebound ensured the points were shared.

"Switching off for a split second, in a game like this, can cost you a goal, especially on the counterattack. And it happened in this game," rued Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida. "I think my players played well. It's just that we couldn't finish despite the many chances that we got. So, that's one aspect of our game we need to work on. We take the one point, learn from it, and move on."

Robert Mendy had two great chances to score in the opening period, but his early free header went over, and his curling effort inside the box could only graze the post.  Meanwhile, Ref Cuaresma reacted well to deny Gabriele Mascazinni's near post strike.

Mintah opened the scoring from close range five minutes into the second period, heading in Janrick Soriano's wonderful delivery from the right flank. But the lead only lasted four minutes. Jhan-Jhan Melliza wriggled free from a counterattack and was given space to fire. Although his shot was well stopped by Cuaresma, the ball fell kindly for Villarico to tap in.

With the teams level, tensions started rising. Things almost boiled over between Jovin Bedic and Ruben Doctora. Bedic had clearly tugged at Doctora, who took exception, and retaliated with a shot to Jovin's face. Both players were cautioned for the incident.

The introduction of Kenshiro Daniels and Antonio Ugarte provided more control of possession, and allowed Kaya to pepper Stallion's defense. Mendy headed over again, Mintah had a strike go wide, and Ugarte had a deflected strike stopped. In the end, Makati's pressure failed to yield a go-ahead.

"When I play against Stallion, I know they're going to play physical, and they're going to play all out. We prepared for that," said Man of the Match, and former Stallion player, Jordan Mintah. "Today, that wasn't like our side. If you get the chances we got, if we finished them, we would've won. We have to go back and work on it. Then, it is time to face Meralco [Manila] again."

Jordan Mintah and Noel Marcaida
Although the result denied Kaya the distinction of being the first team to reach six straight wins in the PFL, coach Noel Marcaida refused to be too disappointed.

"The month of July we did well. Having seven games unbeaten — drawing two, and winning five — it's a pretty good record. We were able to meet our objective of getting more points in the month of July. Now we regroup and focus our attention on facing Meralco [Manila] next week."

Miguel Tanton Puts in a Birthday Performance to Remember for Kaya FC Makati

Miguel Tanton

Kaya FC Makati returned to their winning ways in style, triumphing over Stallion Laguna, 3-1, at the Biñan Football Stadium. A goal from Jordan Mintah, and a brace from birthday boy Miguel Tanton, did the damage for the visiting side.

"I'm happy with the win, we were able to get maximum points against Stallion," said head coach Noel Marcaida, before praising Tanton's standout performance.

"He deserves to be Man of the Match — a gift from himself, and a gift from the team for him as well. Today is a very special day for him."

On his 28th birthday, Tanton ensured it would be an event to remember, scoring an exquisite free kick on either side of half time to not only open his scoring account in the Philippines Football League, but also seal victory for his team.

"It's a great feeling you know. When it's your birthday [it's possible] you think too much. You think maybe you're either the best or the worst. I don't know if you could play in between, so luckily today I was on the positive end," he said after the game.

Asked if the occasion was the reason for his inspired performance, he responded, "Not quite. I wasn't really thinking, so I guess, that is being in the zone. I felt sharp."

With three points and a Man of the Match performance in the bag, he plans to spend the rest of the day with those closest to him.

"I'll probably have dinner with my mom and girlfriend. I don't know what else I'm going to do. Maybe I'll open a present hopefully, or two," he smiled.

The only hiccup for Kaya in the match was a Yannick Tuason consolation right before the final whistle, which denied the team a chance at a clean sheet. Although the goal was irrelevant to the result, it did not go unnoticed.

"We still have to work on finishing the game on a strong point, without conceding late in the game," emphasized Marcaida, who a few days ago, witnessed his side give up a 90th minute goal that salvaged a 2-2 draw for Global Cebu FC.

The result snaps a three-game winless run for Kaya FC Makati, who will now travel to Davao to face the Aguilas on July 9. Meanwhile, Stallion remain winless after nine matches.

FC Meralco Manila hosts Stallion Laguna on 446th Manila Day

Meralco's Alvin Sarmiento against Stallion last May 6.

League-leading FC Meralco Manila hosts Stallion Laguna in their third PFL match in eight days this afternoon, June 24.

The Sparks failed to win a match for the first time in six games last Wednesday when the Davao Aguilas held them to a 2-2 draw in Tagum. The point they earned keeps them atop the standings on 16 points, with second-place JPV Marikina a point adrift after they defeated Ilocos United in Bantay, Ilocos Sur on Wednesday via a 2-1 scoreline. It must be noted that Manila has played one less game than the Mariqueños.

The contest will be a rematch of the encounter in Biñan, Laguna on May 6, when Manila prevailed 5-1. However, Stallion looks to have addressed that leaky defense, only allowing one goal in the last couple of games, including a goalless draw at home against Davao this past Sunday.

Meralco will need to recover well from this game physically. Before playing Davao midweek the Sparks were also in action on Saturday, edging Kaya 2-0 in the University of Makati on goals by Joaco Cañas and Phil Younghusband. The Philippines' all-time leading scorer also played two international games for the Azkals in the days before the Kaya game, scoring against Tajikistan.

Striker Connor Tacagni will be unavailable for selection for Sparks coach Aris Caslib. The former San Beda player dislocated his left shoulder early in the second half against Davao and will be out several weeks. The team is also still without James Younghusband, who is recovering from an ankle injury.

The game will have extra significance since it takes place on the 446th anniversary of the founding of the capital. No doubt Manila's players would love to give their fans a victory on such an auspicious occasion.

Tickets for the game will be priced at P20 for bleacher seats and P50 for the grandstand. The match will be aired live on PTV 4.

Kaya FC–Makati Looks to Stay Unbeaten at Home

Fitch Arboleda and Jovin Bedic shaking hands for their upcoming match in the Philippines Football League.

Kaya FC–Makati returns to play on home soil on Sunday, riding high after taking maximum points in Ilocos last Wednesday. The Makati club drew their opening game against Ceres Negros at the University of Makati Stadium, before defeating the Davao Aguilas two weeks after in the same venue. With the visit of Stallion Laguna, Kaya looks to stay unbeaten in front of their home fans.

“Our advantage is the home crowd. It gives a boost to the team, especially the Ultras Kaya — they’re always cheering. You can expect a physical game, as Stallion is very aggressive. But we’re prepared for this,” said Kaya midfielder Jovin Bedic.

Although Stallion Laguna enter the game on the back of a heavy defeat against JPV Marikina, they are not being taken lightly by Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida.

“We’re expecting a fast transition game against Stallion,” he said. “They have players like Fitch Arboleda, Balot (Ruben) Doctora, and Jan Jan Melliza, who have the pace that can really exploit space if you give it to them.”

Kaya currently have seven points after four matches, with a 2-1-1 record. Sunday’s match wraps up a grueling run of four games in the span of two weeks.

“Four games in 15 days is quite difficult. But being professionals, there are no excuses. You have to be able to deliver your responsibilities,” said Marcaida.

Meanwhile, Stallion Laguna are at the bottom of the standings with only a solitary point so far. Their last match was a 4-0 defeat to JPV Marikina at their home ground at the Biñan Football Stadium.

“We’re practicing more on defending because that’s where we have been encountering problems,” said Stallion standout Fitch Arboleda. “It will be physical tomorrow, because like us, Kaya is very aggressive.”
