FAR Eastern University notched its second straight win in the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Volleyball Tournament after sweeping University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18 on Wednesday afternoon at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

After needing some time to heat up in the first set, the Tamaraws wasted no time taking the early advantage in the second frame to rip the Fighting Maroons, 25-16, and move on the verge of the sweep.

UP went point-per-point in the third set, trailing 15-16 midway but the efforts of Amet Bituin, Mikko Espartero, Ariel Cacao, Dryx Saavedra, and Lirick Mendoza were too much, lifting FEU to the dominant win in one hour and 26 minutes.

Magandang preparation ito for Sunday’s game against NU. Yung pinakitang receiving at attacking medyo nakikita natin na maganda yung pinagmumulan, pati yung service receive maganda rin kaya siguro mas magiging maganda yung game sa Sunday,” said Tamaraws head coach Eddieson Orcullo.

The Tamaraws and the Bulldogs, now tied at 2-0, will break the tie on Sunday, 12 p.m., at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Saavedra top-scored with 13 points on 12-of-26 attacks, while Espartero added 10 points on 9-of-15 kills for FEU, which flexed in the spiking category with 44, 14 more than the 30 of UP.

Nigerian spiker Olayemi Raheem was the lone bright spot for the Fighting Maroons with 16 points on 16-of-36 attacking clip.

UP aims to return to its winning ways when it clashes with Ateneo on Sunday at 10 a.m.

The Fighting Maroons absorbed their first loss of the season to level with the Blue Eagles at 1-1.
