Ronda Pilipinas resumes tomorrow

Ronald Oranza
Current Ronda Pilipinas leader Ronald Oranza hopes to retain his lead when the tour resumes tomorrow morning with Stage 9, a trek of just over two hundred kilometers that starts at the Silang Municipal Hall and ends at the Tagaytay Convention Center.

In between, the cyclists will have to deal with four climbs from Kaybiang Tunnel as well as the steep passes of Leynes in Talisay, Batangas.

With a seven-minute lead over his rivals, Oranza believes that he needs to be cautious if he has hopes of holding on to the symbolic red jersey. He says in Filipino, "I need to be extra careful because anything can happen in the next few stages."

Defending champion Jan Paul Morales is in second place, and has already committed to ensuring his Navy-Standard Insurance teammate holds on to the lead. Morales shares, "If I can’t win it this year, I want the winner to be a Navyman so I don’t mind if Oranza wins it. He has a big lead and we will do our best to just protect it."

Completing the top ten in the overall individual standings are the following cyclists:

3rd: Jay Lampawog (Go for Gold Developmental) 21:19:31
4th: Cris Joven (Army-Bicycology) 21:20:02
5th: John Mark Camingao (Navy-Standard Insurance) 21:20:24
6th: George Oconer (Go for Gold) 21:20:51
7th: Ronnel Hualda (Go for Gold Developmental) 21:21:29
8th: Rudy Roque (Navy-Standard Insurance) 21:21:42
9th: Irish Valenzuela (CCN Superteam) 21:22:04
10th: Junrey Navara (Navy-Standard Insurance) 21:22:08

With five cyclists in the top ten, it's surprise that Navy-Standard Insurance is lording over the field in the team classification, toting an aggregate time of 82:19:52, just over half an hour quicker than Go for Gold Developmental's 82:52:24.
