Rodrigo Duterte backs Philippine bid for 2023 FIBA World Cup co-hosting

The President of the Republic of the Philippines welcomed the three-man FIBA Evaulation Commission that arrived last week to inspect the facilities set to be used for the Filipino portion of the tri-nation bid for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The trio of of FIBA Central Board and Commission president Hamane Niang (Mali), FIBA Central Board member and treasurer Ingo Weiss (Germany), and advisor to the FIBA Secretary-General Lubomir Kotleba (Slovak Republic) paid a courtesy call to Rodrigo Duterte at the Mahogany Room of the Manila Hotel. Accompanying the three during the courtesy call are Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan and Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez.

Other officials present during the meeting are Executive Secretary Salvador Mediaidea, Special Assistant to the President Bong Go, SBP President Al Panlilio, SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios, and SBP Deputy Executive Director for International Affairs Butch Antonio.

After meeting the President, the three then proceeded to conduct their ocular inspection of the different venues set to be used for the festivities: the Philippine International Convention Center, the SMART-Araneta Coliseum, the Mall of Asia Arena, and the Philippine Arena.

The Philippines is co-hosting this bid alongside Japan and Indonesia, which also serves as the major qualifier for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. 32 nations are on tap to participate.
