La Salle crushes UST

La Salle made mincemeat of the University of Santo Tomas, as they essayed a smooth 94-59 victory at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Growling Tigers kept themselves within striking distance early on against the defending champions, scoring the first four points of the game and even leading 12-9 with over three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first quarter, but the Green Archers would close the period with an 11-4 burst to take the lead after ten minutes, 20-16.

From there onwards, it was the La Salle show, as they uncorked a 25-8 bomb of a second period to erect a 45-24 halftime lead. Ricci Rivero would outscore UST in that stretch, 11-8, as he showcased his variety of crowd-pleasing moves.

The second half was generally the same, as the Green Archers continued to pour it on against their hapless opposition, eventually erecting an 85-43 lead on a Jollo Go triple with 6:39 left in the game.

Ricci would finish with sixteen points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block, while Ben Mbala topscored for La Salle with seven points, nine rebounds, an assist, a steal, and three blocks.

Both players, as well as the rest of the La Salle starting five in Andrei Caracut, Aljun Melecio, and Leonard Santillan, did not have to play in the fourth period.

The win puts La Salle at the cusp of clinching at least a twice-to-beat advantage in the postseason, either by winning one more game from its remaining schedule or for Adamson to lose one of its remaining assignments.
