Cignal steps in to ensure Eala coverage in Asian Games

Eala at the WTA125 Philippine Open

There will be no world feed for tennis at the 20th Asian Games. There will be Alex Eala — and Cignal TV is making sure Filipino fans see her.

The official Philippine broadcaster is spending an extra P1 million to mount its own coverage at Higashiyama Park Tennis Center after tennis was left off the list of 28 sports guaranteed a live signal by host broadcaster China Media Group-International Media Port.

Tennis, without its Chinese and Japanese stars, was relegated to highlights and ENG crews.

"We will not let the Filipinos down in not being able to watch Eala's games here," said Sienna Olaso, Cignal first vice president and head of sports content. "We'll place our own cameras and digital equipment."

Cignal carries Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on ONE Sports, ONE Sports+ and Pilipinas Live, building its promotion around ace athletes led by Eala, gymnast Carlos Yulo and pole vaulter EJ Obiena.

The problem emerged when the draw collapsed.

The Chinese Tennis Association confirmed Zheng Qinwen, former world No. 4, will not play in Aichi-Nagoya, along with Zhang Zhizhen, Jerry Shang Juncheng, Bu Yunchaokete and Wang Xinyu. They chose ATP events in Chengdu and Hangzhou and the China Open in Beijing — a combined ATP 500 and WTA 1000 that runs directly against the Asiad tennis schedule from Sept. 27.

Indonesia's Janice Tjen has also withdrawn. Japan's top aces are expected to skip for the same reason.

That leaves Eala, ranked No. 18, as the highest-ranked player in the women's field. She is one of only two women in the Top 20 who will miss Beijing to play the Asian Games.

Eala gave up a shot at a lucrative prize and ranking points in Beijing to chase flag and country. She will fly to Nagoya from the Singapore Open.

The stakes for the Philippines are historic — its first Asian Games tennis gold since 1962.

UAAP embraces ‘For Everyone’ vision for Season 89

c/o Cignal

Far Eastern University is opening UAAP Season 89 with a message that goes beyond the competition on the court: the UAAP is #ForEveryone.

As this season’s host, FEU is using the theme to recognize not only the student-athletes who take center stage, but also the coaches, officials, student journalists, volunteers, alumni, partners, fans, and other members of the community who help keep the league moving.

For FEU, #ForEveryoneUAAP is meant to capture the shared responsibility and passion that have sustained the league through the years.

Inspired by the university’s “Be Brave” mantra, the theme calls on the UAAP community to compete with integrity, support one another, and strengthen the connections that make collegiate sports more than just a competition.

The season will officially open on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, with Vice Ganda and Gloc-9 headlining the opening ceremony.

FEU is also putting the UAAP itself at the center of Season 89’s identity by opting not to create a separate season logo.

UAAP Season 89 President Mark Molina said the league should maintain one clear and recognizable mark rather than introduce a new logo every season.

“We believe there should be only one UAAP logo. Creating a different logo for every season can confuse the audience and weaken the branding of the UAAP logo,” Molina said.

The current UAAP logo, created in 2021 by then-FEU Bachelor of Fine Arts Visual Communication student Darryl John Digal, will instead be paired with the “For Everyone, UAAP” theme.

The season’s visual identity will use beadwork-inspired elements, paying homage to Mangyan beadwork traditions, giving Season 89 its own character without creating another logo.

“Since the UAAP logo itself was created by an FEU student, we also saw this season as an opportunity to highlight the story behind the mark rather than create another one,” Molina added.

Bringing everyone together during its Season 89 Collegiate Basketball press conference at Novotel Manila Araneta City on Tuesday, Cignal will continue offering the games to viewers on their different platforms on high definition, free-to-air, OTT, and digital.

“We want UAAP basketball to be as accessible as possible to all fans. By making the basketball games available on the different platforms, we are happy to hear that Cignal is broadcasting it to all viewers, regardless of generation so that they can experience and support our student-athletes,” Molina said.

For the sixth straight season, the games will be shown on the UAAP Varsity Channel 263 in HD, One Sports on free-to-air television, and now the CignalPlay app.

As for the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, it will also be broadcasted live around the world on the ONE Sports Youtube channel.

Cignal First Vice President and Head of Sports Sienna Olaso said the partnership allows the UAAP to reach fans through the platforms where they are already watching and engaging with sports.

“We are excited to bring UAAP basketball to more Filipinos through the platforms where they are already tuning in. We are always looking for ways to reach an even broader audience while continuing to deliver the quality coverage that UAAP fans have come to expect,” Olaso said.

The men’s basketball tournament officially gets underway on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

FEU faces Adamson University at noon, followed by defending champion De La Salle University against National University at 2:30 p.m. in a rematch of last season’s Final Four matchup.

University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas then meet at 6 p.m., with a separate ticket required for the matchup.

The collegiate women's basketball tournament, meanwhile, will tip off on September 26 as the UAAP makes way for Gilas Pilipinas Women’s commitments in the 5-on-5 and 3x3 competitions of the 20th Asian Games, as well as the FIBA 3x3 Under-23 World Cup 2026.

UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rene Saguisag Jr. said the league is also fully behind the national women’s teams as they juggle their international commitments.

“The UAAP has always believed that our responsibility goes beyond the league. When our athletes wear the Philippine jersey, they represent all of us. We want to give Gilas Women our full support and make sure they have the opportunity to prepare and compete at the highest level,” Saguisag said.

Cignal TV, POC set for Paris 2024 partnership

c/o Cignal

With the countdown to the 2024 Paris Olympics reaching 100 days, the Philippine Olympic Committee and Cignal TV are set to join forces in launching Isang Daang Taon Laban Para sa Bayan: Celebrating 100 Years of Filipino Excellence in the Olympics.

This campaign kicks off the country's quest towards the quadrennial event, as it seeks to build on the successes in Tokyo, where we finally snagged our first gold medal thanks to Hidilyn Diaz. It also celebrates the centennial of the Philippines' participation in the Summer Games. Sprinter David Nepomuceno is the first Filipino Olympian, as he participated in the 100m and 200m events of the eighth edition of the Games.

Cignal TV and MediaQuest President & CEO Jane J. Basas shares, "Cignal TV has always believed in the skills and talent of the Filipino athlete and this partnership only reiterates our commitment to them. We want them to know that we’re with them every step of the way."

On the POC's part, President Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino adds, "We’re honored to have Cignal TV be our gracious partner for the Paris-bound athletes and this early, we have high hopes of another memorable showing in the Olympics."

A growing crop of Pinoys seek to replicate Diaz's achievements a few years ago, led by gymnast Carlos Yulo, vaulter EJ Obiena, boxers Eumir Marcial and Nesthy Petecio, as well as Vanessa Sarno.

Cignal TV will use its full arsenal at its disposal in documenting Team Pilipinas' buildup and preparations, including their moments at the country's chosen French headquarters in Metz. Content will then be shown on the varying MediaQuest platforms, whether through mainstream platforms or through digital and social media.

UAAP formalizes new partnership with Cignal TV and SMART, set forth plans for future growth

The deal is signed. UAAP, Cignal TV, and SMART now partners for the next five years.

A new era for the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

The league on Thursday formally entered into a partnership with the country's top Pay TV provider in Cignal TV, as well as with the country's leading mobile services provider SMART Communications, with the goal of shining the spotlight on the numerous student-athletes that participate in its numerous events.

To celebrate this upcoming multi-year partnership, a memorandum of agreement signing took place at the PLDT headquarters in Makati.

Representing the UAAP are Board of Trustees Chairman Bro. Raymundo Suplico, FSC, Season 83 President Emmanuel Calanog, Vice President Fr. Aldrin Suan, Treasurer and Chairman of the Negotiating Panel Edwin Reyes, and Executive Director Rebo Saguisag, with members of the UAAP Board of Managing Directors also in attendance.

Representing Cignal TV and SMART are PLDT Chairman and President Manuel V. Pangilinan, PLDT Group Chief Revenue Officer and SMART Communications President and CEO Alfredo S. Panlilio, SMART Communications SVP and Consumer Business - Wireless Head Jane J. Basas, and Cignal TV and TV5 President and CEO Robert P. Galang.

The UAAP's broadcast rights had been with ABS-CBN for the last couple of decades, before the embattled company made the decision not to pursue a new deal earlier this year. It was during this tenure that the league rose to prominence in the current sports landscape.

As the league's official Philippine broadcast partner, Cignal TV will broadcast the games live via its free-to-air channel One Sports. For SMART, they will be streaming the games live through an exclusive platform available for its pre- and post-paid subscribers, an approach that was similarly used when they broadcast the NBA games inside the Disney campus earlier this year.

Galang shares, "Our joint venture with the UAAP goes beyond being an official broadcast partner. Together with providing a superior viewing experience for all sports fans nationwide, we have put in place plans to help further grow the league and its athletes — giving more depth to our partnership." He also adds, "We are confident that this undertaking will inspire and revitalize our countrymen who have such a deep affinity for sports. From the Cignal team, and the rest of the MVP group, it is with great pleasure that we welcome the UAAP, and we are extremely excited to begin our partnership."

Panlilio says, "Our partnership with UAAP opens a lot of groundbreaking opportunities to further expand the digital footprint of the country's biggest collegiate league while we leverage on the strength of our Smart LTE and 5G networks to give viewers an amazing mobile streaming experience. Through the power of digital technology, we hope to inspire more Filipino youth to discover and cultivate their passion for sports and strive for excellence."

Aside from securing broadcast rights, both Cignal TV and SMART have committed to continuously grow the popularity of the UAAP and its student-athletes through various activities within the league's member schools, allowing it to extend such an engagement to the students.

Bro. Suplico had this to say about their partnership: "The partnership with Cignal TV and Smart will continue to bring the UAAP closer to the students and alumni of the member schools as well as the general public. We are grateful for this opportunity to showcase and highlight UAAP’s values, especially, promoting amateur sportsmanship and the well-rounded development of our student athletes, through the various platforms of Cignal TV and Smart."

The league had recently announced that it is shelving its 83rd season due to the pandemic, allowing all parties to better focus on their preparations for the 84th season this coming September 2021. In spite of the cancellation, all three parties remain committed in bringing the top high school and collegiate league back at the earliest possible time.

NBA enters into partnership with CIGNAL, SMART for broadcast rights in the Philippines

NBA + Cignal + SMART = 2019-2020 NBA season on Philippine TV

Top-quality basketball will make its return to Philippine television.

The National Basketball Association on Monday unveiled a multi-year partnerships with Cignal TV, Inc., as well as SMART Communications, Inc, letting the latter two entities deliver NBA games and programming to Filipino fans, whether it is through free-to-air or satellite television or over-the-top streaming.

The partnership begins this Friday, July 31, with the seeding games, as the NBA restarts its 2019-20 season inside the Disney complex in Florida. Select seeding games and playoff games from the first and second rounds will be shown on TV5 and ONE Sports, with both channels also showing the Conference Finals in their entirety. TV5 also becomes the exclusive home of the NBA Finals.

Cignal is also set to launch a new channel as a result of their partnership with the NBA. Called NBA TV Philippines, it serves as a localized version of NBA TV, which is the NBA's dedicated 24/7 channel. NBA TV Philippines will feature live games and original programming in high definition.

Already in partnership with the NBA with regards to the distribution of League Pass, the NBA's premium live game subscription service, SMART expands on that partnership to also enable NBA TV Philippines to be streamed through its new over-the-top service that is exclusive to its paid subscribers. SMART is also set to revive NBA.com/Philippines later this year. The site is considered as the league's official digital destination in the country, and aside from providing highlights, schedules, scores, and stats, as well as features and analysis from its roster of sports journalists.

NBA Asia Managing Director Scott Levy shares, "The NBA restart is set against a uniquely challenging moment in time for our fans in the Philippines, who are among the most passionate and dedicated NBA supporters in the world. We are excited to partner with Cignal and Smart to bring NBA games to a nationwide audience, and we hope to play a role in lifting the spirits of Filipinos by bringing our fans together through their shared love of the game."

Cignal TV President and CEO Robert Galang adds, "We at Cignal TV are extremely thrilled to bring the world’s biggest basketball league back to every Filipino home. Our partnership with the NBA is a huge milestone in our mission to bring the best content to our viewers and subscribers.  With three channels broadcasting the games, Filipinos now have the chance to experience the NBA live on free TV channels TV5 and ONE Sports, and on Cignal TV’s NBA TV Philippines in high definition.  The game we all love is now truly home."

SMART President and CEO Alfredo Panlilio says, "As some of the world’s biggest basketball fans, the hunger for live basketball action is in our DNA. This is why we at Smart could not contain our excitement as we partner with the NBA to bring the world’s premier basketball league to the fingertips of Filipinos.  This reinforces our commitment to bring amazing experiences through technology made simple by Smart."

Aligned with the upcoming NBA restart and to celebrate the new partnership, Cignal is set to launch "The Game You Love is Home" campaign, highlighting the availability of NBA TV Philippines on select prepaid and postpaid plans.

For updates about the new partnership in their respective perspectives, one can check out www.cignal.tv (Cignal) and www.smart.com.ph (SMART), as well as in their respective social media platforms.

As for broadcast schedules, make sure to check out the social media platforms of TV5, ONE Sports, and Cignal TV, as well as NBA Philippines.
