Ginebra San Miguel reveals new jersey, GK partnership

Barangay Ginebra

In line with their newest campaign, Ginebra San Miguel Inc. is releasing the jerseys that its PBA team will sport for the upcoming season.

The new jerseys made their debut in a virtual launch on Thursday, with Japeth Aguilar, Mark Caguioa, Stanley Pringle, LA Tenorio, and Scottie Thompson wearing the two versions, coming in red and in white. Caguioa is also sporting the team's new cap.

GSM's latest campaign, entitled "Bagong Tapang," highlights the courage and strength that Filipinos possess to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Aside from the launch, a virtual fan meet-style program took place as a means to take the place of the customary victory party and fans day for the 2020 Philippine Cup champions.

Tenorio shares, "Ang Ginebra fans ibang level talaga. May PBA man o wala, nararamdaman namin na nandyan sila at sumusuporta sa amin. At first, we thought we are not going to survive playing without the fans because as a never-say-die team, doon kami humuhugot ng lakas. Sila ‘yung 6th man namin sa game. Napag-usapan ng team na iisipin namin ‘yung ginagawa namin ay para sa fans at para magbigay inspirasyon lalo na sa panahon ngayon."

Fans will have the chance to get their very own "Bagong Tapang" One Ginebra Nation jersey or cap starting May 1 until June 30, 2021 through its "Bagong Tapang sa One Ginebra Nation Jersey and Cap Collection Promo."

They just need to accumulate any combination of six seals or caps from any of these Ginebra brands: Ginebra San Miguel, GSM Blue, GSM Blue Flavors, Ginebra San Miguel Premium Gin and Primera Light Brandy. One can then head over to select Puregold stores that act as redemption outlets to claim the jersey. Just fork over an additional PhP 100 for the jersey and PhP 150 for the cap. Certifying its authenticity is the presence of a patch on the jersey and a sticker on the cap.

As an additional touch, GSMI has also entered into a partnership with Gawad Kalinga and its Walang Iwanan program. Those who redeem the jersey/cap will also be able to donate to GK's beneficiaries in Sariaya, Quezon and Pililia, Rizal

General Manager Noli Macalalag shares, "To underscore the need for unity during these times, we partnered with Gawad Kalinga and through the promo, we aim to support GK’s Barangay Walang Iwanan program that helps Filipinos who are severely affected by the pandemic. We hope to encourage Gin Kings fans and our consumers to ‘put on’ a Bagong Tapang kind of courage and to wear this kind of Bagong Tapang for others to see and emulate."

LG Sakers, Ginebra renew acquaintances in upcoming exhibition

LG Sakers vs Barangay Ginebra
Korean Basketball League stalwarts LG Sakers make a return trip to the Philippines later this month for another go against crowd darlings Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the Asian Basketball Showdown 2 on September 17 at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Five years ago, the same two teams met at the same venue, with the Korean side winning, 81-75. The Gin Kings did not feature LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar for that matchup, having been fresh from their FIBA World Cup campaign in Spain with Gilas Pilipinas.

The Sakers finished with the third-best record in the 2018-19 KBL regular season, defeating Busan KT Sonic Boom in the quarterfinals before losing to the Incheon Electroland Elephants in the semifinals.

The Gin Kings are fresh from losing in the semifinals of the Honda Commissioner's Cup, bowing to TNT Katropa in four games. They hope to avenge their loss last time out, but at the same time be able to provide quality entertainment for the fans of both sides.

Both the Sakers and the Gin Kings are looking at this friendly as a means to prepare for their resepctive local campaigns, the upcoming KBL season and the Governors' Cup, respectively.

LG Electronics Philippines Managing Director Inkwun Heo shares, "In the spirit of celebration of the 70th anniversary of South Korean and Philippine diplomatic relations, we want to treat Filipinos to an experience they’ll never forget."

Much like their first meeting, the exhibition match is a free event, courtesy of LG Philippines. Fans just need to follow the full mechanics on Facebook.

Japeth Aguilar and Barangay Ginebra beats Meralco at the buzzer

c/o PBA website
Barangay Ginebra was down to Meralco five points with 15.1 seconds left, 82-77. The Bolts were at the cusp of being able to replicate their win over the current league leaders.

Then the following things happened:

Jay-R Reyes, whom Head Coach Ato Agustin inserted in place of Greg Slaughter, nails a corner three with 12.8 seconds remaining. Ginebra down two, 82-80. Reyes, prior to this game, missed his only three pointer he attempted this conference and is a career 26.5% shooter from there (he did shoot 40% in one season, back with Rain or Shine in 08-09).

Mark Caguioa immediately fouls John Wilson, who came into the game shooting 74% from the line and earlier in the game split his charities. He misses both free throws, yet puts out a wry smile. Ball goes out and in the ensuing review, the officiating trio of Mariano, Tankion and Gruta awarded possession to Ginebra.

With 11.8 seconds remaining, this is how it went down.

The Gilas Pilipinas standout finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds, an assist, four blocks and a reminder why Barangay Ginebra owns the mantra "Never Say Die."

Japeth Aguilar saves Ginebra

c/o InterAKTV's Paolo Papa

How did we get here: Barangay Ginebra is down a point after Larry Fonacier nails a baseline jumper with 22.9 seconds left to give Talk 'N Text the lead. Ato Agustin uses a timeout, intending for LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar to work together on a pick or screen and roll situation. It's a familiar thing to see, since they played together for SMART-Gilas Pilipinas, after all.

Let's proceed from there, shall we.

Japeth finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 blocks in a game that left us all awe-struck from Sunday night until now.
