Adamson creeps closer to Finals berth in softball

Adamson remained undefeated in softball to six games so far with a dominant 10-0 shutout of Ateneo in one of the two scheduled matches at the UAAP Season 86 tournament being held at the UP Baseball Field inside the Diliman campus on Wednesday.

The Lady Falcons needed four innings to take care of business against the Blue Eagles, scoring nine runs in the first couple of them, including triples from Angelu Gabriel, MJ Maguad, and Aliza Pichon that netted six runs in the second.

Gabriel, Maguad, Roma Cruz, Rem Herrero, and Alaiza Talisik, contributed a couple of hits each, with Adamson peppering Ateneo's defense with thirteen hits.

On the mound, Glory Alonzo and April Minanga combined to force zero hits from the Blue Eagles.

Assistant coach Sherylou Valenzuela took charge of the Lady Falcons in this one, with Ana Santiago being honored at the PSC Women in Sports Awards night slated that day. She shares, post-match, "Wala pa ring mag-kampante. Dapat every training all out, dapat every game all out. Every game dapat one at a time. Huwag nilang isipin na malapit na kami, dapat all out pa rin."

At 6-0, Adamson can formalize their spot in the finals with a victory against La Salle on Saturday.

The other game in the doubleheader featured the University of Santo Tomas securing a 9-0 shutout of the Lady Archers.

Already leading 5-0 in the final inning, pinch hitter Kikay Palma emptied a bases-loaded sequence with a triple, allowing Christine Bautista and Helga Campos to score, with an ensuing errant throw ensuring Angela Solidarios and Palma to touch home and cap off the blowout victory.

The Tiger Softbelles improved to 5-1, setting the stage for crucial matchups against fellow contenders University of the Philippines (3-3) and Adamson University in the race for the two postseason spots.
